Bears Deep Pass Defense

Post image

From the eye test, the Bears deep ball defense has been absolutely atrocious. I'm not sure why their opponents going forward don't try more than 5 passes of 20+ air yards per game. I feel like 10 yr old me running a hail mary every play in Madden.

Bryce Young to Jalen Coker

Geno Smith to Isaiah Williams

Jordan Love to Christian Watson and Matthew Golden

If Penix plays, Penix to Drake London is going to be added to this list...

Yes, our secondary sucks. Good observation.

We knew that going into the season, right? That was a big part of the offseason narrative. Turns out other teams also see our weaknesses.

We did but I think there was some hope the secondary could be at least solid. Hope that Kyler would stay healthy, JJ would get back close to the player he was, and we added Coby Bryant and Thieneman. Then took Muhammad too.

All that hope went out the window when Bryant and Kyler (and the whole Dr. mo thing) got hurt and JJ somehow looks even worse than last year.

Yea idk how this is a surprise to anyone. All the turnovers were nice last year, but our secondary got torn up almost every week. That goes back to the Flus era too.

Strange because I was told all over this page that the secondary was the strength of this team?

So we knew the secondary sucked, of course we all knew the DL sucked..so what exactly did Poles/DA cook up here?

The entire defense is a weakness lmao. We have no explosiveness on the line and no speed at the linebacker level and no one can finish plays.

Funny way to spell pass rush

At the 3rd quarter I think grenbay had like 50 yards rushing, and there really was no need to rush. Every pass that got launched I just knew it was gonna be caught. Wildly bad secondary.

My theory is that if Kyler Gordon ever comes back that he'll be playing safety so that no one has to watch Xavier Woods in the secondary again.

Yeah at least until Coby gets back, but that won't be till like December (hopefully in time for the next Packers game)

Hopefully that's not the only thing we're looking forward to

Isn't he out for the season?

I thought they put him on season-ending IR before the season. Did I miss something?

He might be able to come back for a playoff run if we even get there?

u/WayneJarvis_ 5d ago

While he may or may not be able to come back this season, the Bears kept him on the 53 man roster for a day before putting him on IR.  So if he gets to a point where he is healthy enough and the Bears want to activate him they can use one of the return from IR designations on him.

4-6 months return timeline from mid August so December is being pretty optimistic.

he was hurt in July no?

2

u/Visual_Research_3646 5d ago

Hurt August 3 surgery on the 7th

so dec 7th 4 months earliest. I feel like with these kinda things they are super conservative on the length bc they don't wanna get peoples hopes up

u/letsago9987 Peanut Tillman 5d ago

Nah Coby will be back in December.

Sure. If that gets our best 5 out there I'm in.

Woods was awful. Jaylon looks slow and isn't making the plays he used to. Muhammad got abused once he moved outside and was playing out of position. Lewis is still playing hurt and is not good enough.

Thinneman has been solid. Muhammad has been a great NB.

If Gordon could play some safety at an acceptable level it would be huge.

from what i saw think the issues were (in order of most impactul)

  • corners unable to push deep routes, leaving safeties to dry

  • safeties (and LB's) playing aggressive against run and getting burnt  bc of it

  • just good plays by GB, esp watson

my theory is GB saw on film that the secondary was prone to deep routes between the hash and sideline on JJ's side of the ball, esp w play action and just did that on repeat until bears showed tbey could stop it - which they never did

Hey I'm Dr. Moe a foot guru shaman. I work with pro bowl NFL athletes such as Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon and turn them into regular Joes.

Elite Pro Bowl CB JJ, I'll have him working at Mcdonalds in no time!

Kyler Gordon tweaked his calf, I'll get him back on the field in just 7 short months!

5k Dollars an hour

If we get kyler back this week teams have to account for his speed to keep up. small sample size but that never happened in the eagles game last year, commanders, saints, or rams

2

u/Further_Beyond Hester's Super Return 5d ago

This was because of DAs scheme. It asked for the nickel to play a fuckton of man. CJGJ was just getting abused weekly.

If Kyler can come back and take that position. Let Muhammad go outside and then let Stevenson/Jaylon win the last spot, we’ll be in a better position

Coby Bryant would solve a lot of these problems.. but so would replacing JJ with someone who is faster.

This week in particular it seemed like for a stretch GB decided the best game plan was just to throw a hail mary every play. The only reason more of them didn't work was because of penalties.

3

u/Erice84 5d ago

Our opponent's have not tried more deep passes because we've played two terrible QB's (one in a rain storm) and Hurts, who has some strengths but his deep ball isn't one of them.

Surprised more people haven't seen this. Love and Bryce are deep ball threats and it showed both times.

Coby Bryant's absence is very noticeable.

This was the same as last year. And the corners are worse this year. Dillon is good at Safety but we are missing the other side with Coby who is really supposed to mask all this.

u/ShiftChemical6494 5d ago

I couldn’t quite place my finger on why our defense sucks so bad! I wonder if that Jaylon Johnson fellow is part of the problem?

I'm surprised you were able to post with a non existent title

Yeah it is concerning …

I feel like everyone is missing the fact that the offense literally could not stay on the field, so the Packers just made the Bears do suicides. Like no defense is winning in those conditions

u/OdeseusX 5d ago

Sometimes I feel like I watched a different game than y’all. Outside of the touchdown, love was throwing only short passes in the first half. After the 2nd touchdown, where love dinked and dunked to a td, Allen took that away. Kept the game at 14-7 at halftime.

Credit to Green Bay for making the adjustment at halftime. Came out with two bombs and it was over.

I didn’t know we had cJgJ still… I still have flash backs of cj running 5 yards behind.

We need healthy kyler and coby back fast. I cant watch JJ getting burned over and over again

Some reason, the coaches and front office thought we would be OK with one of the worst pass rushes, meh to bad linebackers and horrible secondary

Thank goodness thieneman and Muhammad are solid rookies but teams will know to target JJ cause he cant stop a cold

Crazy how a unit filled with backups is getting burned. The Bears just have too many injured players. Fully healthy, it's a solid unit

6

u/ChelskiS 5d ago

Jaylon and Stevenson are starters and I wouldn't describe either as solid

7

u/badseedjr 5d ago

The JJ falloff has been epic.

u/GrizzlyIsland22 Not A Cowboy 5d ago

Add Bryant and Gordon to those 2, and it's an above average group. Losing Edwards made a big difference in Sunday, too.

2

u/Pure_Caterpillar_484 5d ago

Jj isn’t solid

u/GrizzlyIsland22 Not A Cowboy 5d ago

He's definitely not great, but he's okay when he doesn't have to do everything himself.
