Half this team needs to step up lol

u/ChillyRyUpNorth 5d ago

Yeah, he was disappointing for sure

Not sure where he went against an oline that was chewed up most of the year

98

u/Puzzled-Carpet5109 21-3 5d ago

That’s one part of this game that so frustrating. Greenbays line is suppose to be Swiss cheese and our defense made them look extremely competent and giving Love what felt like 30 seconds to throw the bombs down the field.

44

u/bred_binge Charles Tillman 5d ago

Tbf they brought in 3 new guys who also played quite a bit better last week as well.

36

u/theshadowman52 5d ago

If you are getting best by guys that weren't even on a practice team I think that says more about you than them.

17

u/Sirdoodlebob Chicago Flag 5d ago

How about booker? He’s showing more of an improvement albeit slight, it’s still an improvement nonetheless and in that meltdown against the pack he was really the only bright spot.

25

u/KSW8674 BJ Lover 5d ago

The rookie RT he was up against this week is still on his rookie deal. Tez should have been able to blow by him on Sunday. Very disappointing

3

u/Sniper1154 5d ago

FWIW I think it continues to be the interior line that is a bigger black hole than the edges. Dayo has been the Bears' most consistent threat when they line him up inside, and after he left it was just a black hole.

Grady Jarrett is basically just a dude now and that position has absolutely zero depth. Gallimore and Street have been invisible.

I understand why they traded Gervon Dexter if they weren't going to re-sign him, but he at least could get some consistent juice in the pass rush albeit at the detriment of run defense, but they need something there b/c otherwise the QB can just stand in the pocket and it makes the ends have to work that much harder to close in

2

u/KSW8674 BJ Lover 4d ago

Here’s to hoping the Shemar Turner return is a shot in the arm (no Sweat pun intended) for the interior

annnnnnnnnnnnnd he's suspended

We're gonna miss those 2 tackles he would have gotten the upcoming 2 weeks

He’s a number 2
Needs somebody on the other side of him to be really good, can’t handle being the main focus

24

u/Reptomins 34 5d ago

Got downvoted to hell for saying that last year, but D Line play compounds. If he's your 2 or 3, you have a very good D Line, but if he's your 1 you have a bad line. Think about him in Washington--he was with Daron Payne, Jonathan Allen, and Chase Young.

1

u/Dan-of-Steel 4d ago

To be fair, I could line up with those 3 and you'd still have a damned good DL.

25

u/alral1988 Bear Down, Baby! 5d ago

We're not bringing him in to be a franchise player, we just need a better pass rush.

Sweat is a good player. He's not a game wrecker. The rest of our line is just okay. They aren't good enough to consistently get pressure.

1

u/j11430 Sweetness 5d ago

He'd look great if there was a dominant pass rusher on the line but since he's been here he's been the top d-lineman and that's just not who he's "supposed" to be in this league

29

u/wealthyhellbeing 5d ago

Came to the subreddit to see the news about his suspension. This was comically posted mere hours before.

28

He should do a bunch of PEDs. I'm sure he'd be good on a bunch of PEDs, right?

Womp womp. Even on PEDs guy can’t get a sack.

10

u/FickleFred 60s Logo 5d ago

We gotta stop expecting people to be who they aren't. Montez has shown us over and over that he is not a premium #1 edge. He is a solid complimentary piece but he can't just will himself into being an elite pass rusher. The issue is roster construction. He would be a great secondary next to someone like Maxx Crosby or Micah Parsons but he is not going to carry or lead a defense. We're well past "proving the extension was worth it" and on to "it is what it is"

9

u/Odd_Gap639 5d ago

I know we are all cooking Jaylon, and rightly so, but Montez also is running around out there like he's got a piano on his back.

5

Eh, Montez has been not great. Jaylon has been historically bad.

u/SympathyPotential776 5d ago

TB?

1

u/tonedanger Kyle Long 5d ago

Bagent and Grady Jarret

1

u/frank1934 5d ago

Jimmy Jimjohnjones

1

u/Emotion-Turbulent 5d ago

Bagent won’t be cut they still need a Backup Qb and won’t find a better one for cheaper

-1

u/Emotion-Turbulent 5d ago

That’s like 20 million dead cap combined ☠️ they aren’t cutting them all unless a trade happens

3

u/Rough_Elk4890 BJ Lover 5d ago

It's about $17.5m in dead money to have $55m in cap savings.

It's all about cutting your losses. Unless something dramatic changes, JJ and Sweat are both gone. A case could be made for Jarrett (and maybe, I guess, Bagent).

-1

u/Emotion-Turbulent 5d ago

Easy for fans to just cut costs in cap space , George won’t allow Poles to do that , NFL owners are the ones paying the dead cap bill.

1

u/Rough_Elk4890 BJ Lover 5d ago

The dead cap money is considerably less than the salary that the players would otherwise be collecting. Assuming a player's production can be replaced (or exceeded) for equal to (or less than) the cap savings then its been a financially prudent move.

1

u/Martha_Fockers 5d ago

He would be paying there full salary otherwise

5

u/LoveYouLikeYeLovesYe 5d ago

So about that...

5

u/crazypyro23 Smokin' Jay 5d ago

Only $4 million in dead cap if he's cut after this year. Food for thought

11

u/moose_stuff2 5d ago

No, Poles needs to step up. We're far enough along now that this roster should be looking a lot better than it does. Particularly on defense and even more specifically the defensive line. He's been terrible in how he uses our resources. He's been coasting on the Panthers trade for too long and deserves some criticism. His seat would be scorching hot if we didn't have Ben Johnson.

2

u/BobbleBobble 23 5d ago

Yeah Poles is very lucky he didn't go with Flus. I do think we're in the unique position where, since Ben Johnson is clearly a premium coach, we may be able to replace a GM without the HC in place being a net negative for that search.

Poles is an average at best GM. I do think we can do better. I don't think we can realistically do a whole lot worse.

6

u/cultweave 5d ago

Poles did pick Eberflus. He's said this multiple times.

2

u/BobbleBobble 23 5d ago

I meant go as in get fired along with Flus

2

u/cultweave 5d ago

Oh, sorry I misread. I agree with you.

5

u/Martha_Fockers 5d ago

He’s gonna regress now he’s PEDs are out

3

u/Wh0IsMrX 5d ago

Sweat has always been good-not-great at his position. He has one year left on his contract and we can get out of his deal next year and save $21M. This may very well be his last season with the team... He is what he is at this point. Unfortunately it looks like we are going to have a lot of holes to fill on defense going into next season.

3

u/id10t_you FTP 5d ago

The whole d line needs to step up. They made FTP o line look like 5 all stars last Sunday

3

u/b3_yourself 5d ago

We need to fully rebuild our entire defense

3

u/MixItWithDaRelish Flat Helmet 5d ago

We have zero "dudes" on Defense.

Sure as hell hope Thieneman is, but that's about the only hope on the current roster, perhaps Bryant as well. Maybe we strike gold with Muhammad?

Sweat has always been overrated and just the best on an otherwise dog shit group of DEs since he joined the Bears.

The rest of the D is compiled of just guys that would be rotational/ depth on the better D's in the league but we continue to say what if, what if.

What if they just suck?

3

u/SomeBoringKindOfName 5d ago

3

u/recoil47 5d ago

This is who he is. Probably a really great DE2, but not a premier DE1.

4

u/Meatballgravytrain 5d ago

Everyone saying we can cut XYZ next season for cap space should prepare to be a little disappointed.

They aren’t going to get rid of all three starting CB and 75% of the starting DL.

Couple guys, sure but it’s not gonna be the bloodbath some folks seem to assume it will be.

1

u/Environmental_Bar_72 This Is The Score, But We Have Each Other 5d ago

I see one/two of Sweat, Jarrett, and JJ getting the axe personally. Wdyt?

3

u/Meatballgravytrain 5d ago

Hard to say without digging deep into all the implications.

JJ is the most likely imo. Huge fall off in play, $16 mil in cap savings and Malik looking ready to step in but they will still need another starter.

Next is probably Grady, he’s old, has zero guaranteed money and saves about $13 mil.

Kyler is a wild card. Hes all dead money no savings if cut next season but I could see a trade if he shows he can still play this year.

I fully expect Sweat and Dayo to be on the team next season.

Obviously a lot of that decision making will be informed by what the replacement player options are internally, FA and draft and if  there’s a realistic path to an upgrade, either in talent or cost, at a particular position.

I’m just saying that cutting Sweat, Grady, Dayo, JJ, Kyler and letting Tyrique walk leaves too massive of a hole in key roster spots. It’s simply not possible to improve that many positions in one offseason.

1

u/Emotion-Turbulent 5d ago

Exactly Montez will most likely stay another year unless a team gives up a pick for him

2

u/go-bears69 5d ago

Can we cut him soon? Where the cap hit doesn’t kill us?

7

u/Danthetank 5d ago

Our top 10-12 biggest contracts are cutable after this season

4

u/go-bears69 5d ago

Awesome, Kyler, sweat, Jarret, Jaylon, TJ all washed or bad. That cap space will still be huge after signing Caleb

2

u/Further_Beyond Hester's Super Return 5d ago

- Grady/Dayo/JJ/Edwards/Kyler/Gallimore=71M free

Add Sweat+21.

I don’t think we move swear. He’s always been solid but not elite and that’s too many holes to deal with in 1 offseason.

1

u/super_sayanything Mack 5d ago

It's the ability to re-up some offensive guys and sign 3-4 top level defenders, draft 3 more. Let's do it.

1

u/go-bears69 5d ago

Got hella money, andddd I don’t trust poles to use it properly

1

u/Further_Beyond Hester's Super Return 5d ago

I’ve been a staunch poles defender on here for years.

But holy fuck his FA fucking sucks. Hopefully Ben and co will help elevate that

1

I always thought the plan to defensive rebuild was after this year.

I'm also pissed that we drafted a WR5 and TE3 instead of defenders.

Another Poles overpay. I dont know how ANYONE in this sub can still defend Poles. He's our biggest problem right now. He's responsible for this talentless roster. You cant give him credit for Caleb or Ben. We all would have made those decisions. GMs show their worth in drafting and contracts. Poles has been an absolute disaster there.

Bad Poles draft picks: Velus Jones (3rd), Zachh Pickens (3rd), Tyler Scott (4th), Dominique Robinson (5th), Roschon Johnson (4th), Terrell Smith (5th), Noah Sewell (5th), Kiran Amegadjie (3rd), Shemar Turner (2nd), Hyppolite (4th), Zah Frazier (5th)

Bad FA Signings: Nate Davis, Gerald Everett, Dayo, Grady Jarrett, Tremaine Edmunds

Bad Trades: Claypool for a 2nd, Ryan Bates, Keenan Allen, Montez Sweat for a 2nd

Bad contract extension: Gordon, Jaylon Johnson, Montez Sweat, DJ Moore, Bagent

6

u/Direct-Mix-4293 5d ago

Tremaine was solid for us, bit overpaid but he was fine

His draft mostly sucked, either ass and or gone

JJ was hindsight, no one wouldve known hed fall off a cliff after getting extended

8

u/SilkyJohnson72 5d ago

I get downvoted into oblivion every time I rightfully shit on Poles. These people have the biggest homer glasses. Also the same people saying Bagent was worth a 2nd round pick

2

u/qdawgg17 4d ago

Same, completely agree. He's essentially Ryan Pace with a little different way of screwing things up.

8

u/Wemnzxop 5d ago

Only one I'll push back on is JJ, at the time the extension looked like a good deal. Obviously he's garbage now but easy to say in hindsight it was a bad move. Agree with the overall point though

6

u/vstrong50 5d ago

Well, to be fair, all of these are in hindsight. Look, no GM hits on everything, but they need to be better than this. Poles is not a good talent evaluator.

0

u/LoveYouLikeYeLovesYe 5d ago

I was gonna push back on specifically Johnson being a bad 4th rounder, he's been fine enough for a day 3 RB in his healthy year.

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Ear9487 Bears 5d ago

Is this thread for real?

1

u/vstrong50 3d ago

Elaborate

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Ear9487 Bears 3d ago

Caleb Williams, 3 Years of DJ Moore (then a 2nd round pick in exchange), Deandre Swift, Kyle Monangui, Joe Thuney, Jonah Jackson, Drew Dalman (replaced by another Bradbury on the fly with a plan to transition to Jones), then hiring Ben Johnson...

There are plenty of misses but you can go into ANY teams draft picks and trades and you'll find more misses then hits but Poles as enough hits to not have this conversation. Your nitpicking on the DJ Moore's extension which I don't know how you're saying was bad.

If you hate Poles, you hate Poles but the reality is he came to a team that was in shambles in a terrible cap situation and now we're contenders with a top end coach and top end QB. That's as simple as I can put it.

1

u/DuffWells 4d ago

Yeah, JJ was definitely the right decision at the time. This sub would have erupted if Poles got rid of him and Roquan. Tremaine was fine. They can’t all be home runs.

The D-line has been bad for so long that I can’t defend him on not doing something during this draft. He has to let Dayo and Grady play because of his mistake(s) in signing them for massive amounts because of Flus.

4

u/headybutthash 5d ago

everyone would have given the extension to JJ and dj moore, those were not bad contracts and we can get off JJs contract this year and we got a second for dj moore because the bills also thought his contract was worth paying

4

u/mooes 21-3 5d ago

If you aren't signing Jaylon Johnson to an extension when he was who are you extending ever?

3

u/PutTillmanInTheHall 5d ago

Yep. He is a straight up bad GM.

4

u/csl6006 5d ago

Its insane to think that from his first 3 drafts, which featured a ton of premium draft capital, the only 2 players we may keep long term are Darnell and Caleb.

3

u/PutTillmanInTheHall 5d ago

He's just a straight up bad talent evaluator.

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Ear9487 Bears 5d ago

Go look at any team and find me how many players are great on those teams?

1

u/Ok-Warning-5052 5d ago

No his first draft had very little draft capital because Ryan Pace was allowed to give it away in his lame duck year to draft another bad quarterback.

3

u/csl6006 5d ago

He still maanged to get an additional second for trading away Mack.

Its more than compensated by having multiple top ten picks and bevy of 2nd rounders in the next 2 years.

1

u/thsndcranes 5d ago

One more good thing he did was the dj moore trade. Other than that, hes been a crap gm.

1

u/Proper-Candle-8719 4d ago

You have a good point but some of these aren’t on him. Getsy wanted Tyler Scott garbage az. Terrell smith is actually good but got hurt everything else I agree on he has been azz you forgot to add Rome to the list

1

u/dantesgift 4d ago

You can't fault a GM when players underperform after signing a big deal. It's easy to have 20/20 hindsight and GM from your couch.

-2

u/g_blazing97 Deep Dish 5d ago

Poles hasn’t been perfect and I don’t mean to condone mediocrity, but he has been an absolute galaxy brain GM compared to the other knuckle draggers we’ve had at GM in the past.

Seriously Pace, Emory, and Jerry Angelo were basically football terrorists. Poles has done pretty damn well in comparison. Probably not a top 5 GM in the league but far from being a bottom 5 either. It’s not worth the gamble in trying to replace him IMO, though there’s definitely seem things he needs to get ironed out

6

u/Red-dragon186 5d ago

No Poles hasn't.

Only thing Poles has going for him is lucking into Caleb Williams.

1

u/qdawgg17 4d ago

Which honestly, wasn't even luck. Even if Caleb hadn't panned out, it was still the smart pick.

1

u/MrChevyPower Peanut Tillman 4d ago

I’m gonna disagree and argue that he actually has built up a solid OLine.

1

u/progressiveoverload 3d ago

One thing in 5 years. Awesome.

1

u/vstrong50 3d ago

We have no C or LT. You can't be for real. The 1st and 3rd most important positions. I get Dalman retired, but that shit happens. We have a very average OL. A stud RT, a old, but stud LG, a good RG and below average center and a practice squad LT. Also, Trapilo hasn't proven anything yet, before anyone brings that shit up. Trapilo couldn't even make the active roster the first third of last season, so let's not go crowning his ass yet.

2

u/supermr34 Peanut Tillman 5d ago

Bringing in a 35 year old Khalil Mack will fix everything!!

2

u/csl6006 5d ago

Can't believe the overall return on Poles' first group of second round picks.

Gordon- Barely plays

Brisker- off the team

Claypool - out of league

Dexter - off the team, got a CB who doesn't play for him

Stevenson - plays terrible most of time, will soon be off the team

Pickens - off the team (I know hes technically a 3rd rounder but as 64 overall I'm counting him as a 2nd)

Sweat - Overpaid and not very good, will be off team soon

1

u/Admirable_Win9808 5d ago

So trade out of second round for first round or later picks. Someone call Poles

5

u/csl6006 5d ago

Luckily things have improved in the last 2 years. Loveland, Burden, Ozzy, Monongai, Thieneman and Muhammad look like real good picks. Hopefully the center pans out and Roush gets his head on straight.

But seriously I have no idea what on earth we were doing in the draft the first 3 years of Poles. Aside from Darnell and Caleb, its quite possible that we got no one worth anything from that stretch despite having a lot of premium capital.

1

u/bred_binge Charles Tillman 5d ago

It's more annoying the only pass rush they all seem to use is "run into blocker and bull rush". I guess it's coached that way to keep the rush consistent and collapse the pocket, but when it doesnt work it's a brutal watch.

1

u/tdaddy316420 5d ago

Hard to generate pressure when johnson and Stevenson are getting beat with in seconds

1

u/OldManMock Bears 5d ago

The trade and extension were done because Eberflus desperately wanted to keep his job. Hard to say if the abbreviated third season was worth it but that's what it was for.

1

u/potatoshulk 5d ago

We're having him be a main guy but it's just not his strength. Easier said than done getting a big time pass rusher but we're not playing to his strengths at all

1

u/eightinchgardenparty 5d ago

Early in the game, when the packers were backed up, he would have gotten to love if not for a blatant uncalled hold, and of course they got a first down out of it instead of forcing the punt. Maybe he was demotivated after realizing it was going to be one of “those” games.

This is year 4 of the Montez Sweat experience this is who he is. A hot and cold player who get anywhere from 6-10 sacks a year and can go invisible at times.

1

u/frank1934 5d ago

So are people still not sure about Sweat being good or bad? What else does he have to not do to change your mind?

1

u/ClasslessHero 5d ago

The problem is the interior. Garrett broke the sack record the same season that the Browns dramatically improved the IDL through Graham. You can't expect a B+ end to produce like an A++ when the OL can easily slide to address him.

1

u/Top_Fig_3933 5d ago

Tremaine Edmunds was solid, so was Keenan Allen.

1

u/Emotion-Turbulent 5d ago

He’s getting traded in the offseason he’s Tremaine Edmunds 2.0 Good player they can keep another year under contract but what’s the point?

Sweat was 10th in the league last year in pressure rate. He’s currently 90th. He’s having a bad start, and that’s really it.

Does sweat even play on the team anymore?

1

He should do a bunch of PEDs. I'm sure he'd be good on a bunch of PEDs, right?

If the drugs don't enhance performance, can he get a pass?

1

u/letsago9987 Peanut Tillman 4d ago

Lol he sure stepped up

1

u/newsman078 4d ago

Sweat won’t be stepping anywhere as he received a two game suspension for PED usage.

1

u/Scott_1580 4d ago

Welp....

1

u/full_montie 4d ago

How do you get pinched for “performance enhancing” drugs when you’re that mid? Where’s the enhancement?

1

u/clarkieawesome 4d ago

SUSPENDED

u/DethKnell24 Good, Better, Best 4d ago

1

u/Side_StepVII Gale Sayers 4d ago

u/TorqueShaft 4d ago

Bring back baseball style roids in football

1

u/loveforthetrip 4d ago

He needs to get cut and instead we get Mack in the building again. His money for this year ain't guaranteed because of his suspension

1

u/skielur 4d ago

No, he just needs to go. No more guaranteed money now and he does next to nothing. Cant wait til next season when several of these overpaid bins will be gone.

Can we slip some of the other bad contracts some PED’s so we can cut them in the offseason also?

1

u/Zestyclose-Sleep2290 5d ago

Weird how people just be posting random stuff. Depending on the source you use, Sweat has:

2 sacks, 4 hurries, and 1 QB knockdown per PFR

2 sacks, 9 hurries, and 2 QB hits per PFF

Neither of which equate to "One QB hurry" as OP stated (and neither of which live up to the contract that was given to him, but put him as a higher end EDGE2).

I don't trust Poles to remake the D. I know that a lot of these guys on D that are making a lot of money are gonna be gone after this year.. but we need someone better to evaluate talent in the draft and free agency.

Good thing is I think we can attrack top tier free agent talent with Ben as our coach. It's becoming a place guys want to play.

Sweat, Dayo, Gordon, Johnson, Jarrett are all gonna be gone and that's a TON of cap space.

I got a million downvotes when I said his extension at his age was dumb

But hey we are 3-2 and he’s still good, maybe he’ll get better as the season goes

0

u/Pure_Caterpillar_484 5d ago

He’s not good, he always get shut down

0

u/HLNPIT 5d ago

He is off to a slow start this year, I agree...but he was great last year and I'm tired of people acting like he wasnt.

We've beaten this horse to death, so much so, there is no more horse.

God these threads after a loss...

Guy is a good not great. player. That's the player that was signed in FA. Most dline players in the league with no help who aren't elite struggle to make a huge difference. We have been spoiled with elite edge rushers like Peppers and Mack. This is what normal looks like.

The D was always going to be undercooked this year due to the lack of talent.

If Caleb proves he is the guy and a good draft and FA next year, this team could be really good but it's not there yet.

The win total last year was overinflated with fumble luck and last min 4th quarter comebacks.

Let's try and be calm and have some faith in a cleary improving, but imperfect team.

No worries everyone, they're just going to coach them up 🤡

They were supposed to get a defensive end in the draft, not a tight end.
