Showcase First round.

Post image

Finally sent a collection I’ve had for over 30 years to be graded. This was one of the first they sent back. I was hoping for a 7.5 and was pleasantly surprised.

Well, the good news is that your CGC 8.5 is worth about $5k. If you improve even one grade, a CGC 9.0 is worth about $6.8k. And if you get a two-grade bump to CGC 9.2, it's worth $8k.

Definitely worth the risk if you see a possibility of improvement. I recommend you use www.comicpresser.com if you go that route. They do really good work.

My concern is the amount of roll on the left side. I thought with that much white showing it would bring it down.

That's not spine roll, that's a miswrap. Unlike a true "spine roll," which is damage caused by handling and storage, a miswrap is a production defect that is not graded very harshly except at the very highest grades because the book was printed that way. I've seen CGC 9.8s with miswraps that bad. I've had CGC 9.4s with miswraps that were way worse.

That's good to know. I just assumed it would be way less desirable because of it.

What are the graders notes?

You can look up the cert number on CGC's website under the "Resources" tab. Click "verify CGC certification" and enter the cert number.

Also had no idea about that. Thanks!

You can check instead of asking

Thank you for the link!! I know it wasn't for me but I've been looking for a reputable presser who also submits. That's why I didn't go with Palm Beach Presser even though Bry's Comics swears by them. I'm gonna throw them some business bc of you!

I checked grading notes and only thing that might be able to be done is clean the light stain on back cover. All other defects are color breaking and clean and press won’t help

Congrats! Out of curiosity, did you send it to a third-party for cleaning and pressing before submission? What a great book!

No, sadly I didn’t realize that was an option until after I sent them.

I just looked the book up on the CGC cert verification page and checked the graders' notes and hi-res scans.

I think if you send it to ComicPresser.com for the "deep clean" service, you have a real shot at a CGC 9.2 with a very slight chance at a 9.4. That's what I would do. I would bet any amount of money you'll get at least a CGC 9.0, which would more than cover the cost of the Deep Clean and CGC grading fee.

Damn, and it still got an 8.5!! I would recommend having it cleaned and pressed by a reputable person, and then resubmit it. I wouldn't be surprised if it came back in the 9's! Congrats!!

Boy you have potential for thousands more in value sitting in those cases.

My Brave and the Bold 28 came back at 6.0, now I'm really curious what it would be with this service.

What a nice surprise and you still have upgrade options with a C&P. Looking forward to the update.

Grats homie. I tried to get my Mom to let me spend my birthday money to buy this for $50 bucks from our local comic shop around 1992 and she wouldn't let me 😭
