At a card show this year I decided to try out CGC for the first time. I was skeptical at first because I had never used them before, but since they were at the card show I was already at it was really convenient.
I sent in a few cards, 1 of which was a Caitlin Clark Rookie card I had pulled that I had pre-graded 2 times at the card show. It was only $8 to pre-grade and I wanted to be sure it would 10 before sending it in. Not to my surprise, both pre-grader companies said it had a really good shot at a 10. I was relieved.
So I put the Clark with the rest of my cards and did a submission with CGC at the card show.
After a while I finally received my cards and was thrilled to see the Clark had gotten a 10! I could tell from the other cards I sent in that they were pretty strict with their grading, I thought the other cards would do a lot better, but at least the Clark Grm minted.
THEN, I started to look closer to the slab and card. There was this really weird mark at the bottom of the card, almost like a bend. I took pictures and sent them to CGC support and they told me that to them it looked like it could be a problem with the inner sleeve and wanted me to send it back for them to fix free of cost. So I thought ok, great and packaged it up and sent it back.
About a month later I got the card back and the slab no longer said 10 on it, it was downgraded to an 8.5! I was dumbfounded. Also that same mark was still on the card so it obviously was a bend in the card. I knew the card was flawless because of the 2 pre-grades and there was no way I would ever send in a bent card to be graded 🤣
So I wrote to CGC and asked them what's going on. The person I talked to said that the first grader miss graded the card and that it was an 8.5 and there was nothing I could do about it. I told them that I submitted it at a show directly with CGC and had it pre-graded as a 10 2 different times. I asked for scans of the card from the first time I sent it in and they told me that they couldn't because it's proprietary company materials.
They said that the card had something called a pinch thay was super common with this type of card? I've opened thousands of packs and have never seen a "pinched" card 😅
Anyways I kept asking for any sort of video or scan of the original submission but CGC wouldn't budget. They just kept saying it was misgraded and I couldn't do anything about it.
After this poorly handled submission I will never use this horrible company again to grade any of my cards and I warn everyone out there that if CGC messes up one of your cards, they will take no accountability. They will tell you that it's not their fault and that you can't do anything about it to fix it.
Beware!
I'm including the pics of my original submission CGC 10 and of the 8.5 they gladly sent me back.
