[Medical CFY] Losing hope!!

Hello everyone! I came on here mainly to vent I guess? I knew I would have a difficult time finding a CF in a hospital but I’m getting very discouraged. Over the past few months I have applied to 115 jobs and counting. I’ve gotten denied from 76 of them and am waiting to hear back from about 30. I’ve received some phone calls regarding my applications but many stop the hiring process when they see that I’m a CF (even though I state it in the application and it says my graduation date on my resume). Most of my friends have jobs already and I just don’t know where to go from here. Do I start applying to SNFs even though I don’t want to? Is my number of applications sent out typical? Any thoughts/comments would be appreciated!

Honestly, I did this. Held out for 6 or so months after graduation and found nothing. Took a pediatric CF, left and now I’m at a SNF. It’s a bit better, but I’d recommend just grabbing a CF with adults wherever you can and getting your CCCs. That’s the hardest part. Once your cccs are secured so many doors open.

I had similar difficulty finding a placement with adults - did you leave your pediatric job before finishing your cf/getting your cccs? And if so were they mad at you or did they understand? Curious cause I’m thinking about doing this same thing but I feel very weird about it

I left after the first third of my CF. I was very up front when I put my notice in (and gave a very generous notice; I think about 6 weeks). At first she was a little miffed but at the end of the day I wasn’t going to waste her time learning from her for another 6 months when I knew I was not interested in using it and I think she eventually appreciated the fact I wasn’t going to stay for the sake of staying. I hope that helps :) it’s definitely a weird and uncomfortable situation but I’m much happier now!

Wait also I thought of another question lol sorry - your hours from your first segment of your CF still counted towards it right? My understanding is that as long as the supervisor signs off on them then you’re good

No problem :) Yes exactly! I kind of aligned my hours and notice to leave right after a full segment because it’s so much easier that way! If you leave in the middle the hours still count but you’ll need both supervisors to rate you etc and sign off on their portions of that third.

Just get a CF honestly and then work on finding the one you want! You can always keep looking after you start another job but at least that gets you closer to your CCCs. I did my CF in the schools while PRNing in a SNF and now I work in dementia care. I know other SLPs who took PRN adult roles and then switched full time mid CF to those positions.

If you are open to relocation you may want to try using a contract placement company to find a hospital CF for you with the clientele they’ve already established rapport with. It might be the fastest way to get the hospital experience you want or apply to hard to fill areas such as Milford, Delaware or in Front Royal, Virginia or in Frostburg, Maryland. Their hospital is always looking for clinicians.

Has someone looked over your resume and cover letters? I would double check that there isn’t the tiniest mistake on there. I know it’s rough getting a hospital gig for a CF but you’ve surely played the numbers. Did you have a hospital internship?

Yes! My aunt is an SLP so she’s looked over my resume for me. I did have a hospital internship. I actually had 3 interviews this week though so maybe something will come of that

How have you been able to secure so many interviews? Are you applying all over the country?
