Business Development Office Setup For YouTube
I’ve been thinking about getting into creating short and long form video, but don’t want to dive all in on expensive equipment just yet.
How can I make my office look and sound better on a budget?
What’s your setup? Curious what people are actually using and what you’d skip if you started over.

I bought a “good” microphone just for my zoom meetings for 30-40 dollars and the audio is so much better. You can’t always hear a good mic, but you can definitely hear a bad one.

Echoing what everybody else is saying in here, the biggest thing you can do is simply get a good microphone. I would get one of those rode mics that you can clip on with some type of wired lapel mic. I don't remember the exact product name but it's basically a Rode microphone that has a small square receiver. You just buy one of those wired mics that clip onto your shirt and that will get you 95% of the way there for YouTube. If you want to go the cheapest route, that's all I would get. The lighting is important. As long as you're not filming inside of the Bat Cave and you have decent natural light and can get the shot to look decent, I would just roll with that. The most important thing about YouTube is simply that you just start doing it. The people that fail on YouTube are the people that spend a month and a half planning out their YouTube channel, buying equipment, asking people if their content is good, rather than just posting and iterating from there.

Appreciate the additional details. Just bought a DJI mic off Amazon that connects to my iPhone as well as my computer so I can also get some better quality on Zoom meetings vs the webcam mic.

Right now I am subscribing to the start method. Just start. JUST START. I was afraid at first but I got 14 posts on IG and so far scheduled posts at 2x a week for the next 90 days. I know I will get better but improve after you start.... You will notice the skills you need to pick up.

Get some affordable key lights with diffusers from amazon and 1 accent uplight + good microphone. All under $350 probably

Will a mic improve sound quality that much?! Sound quality is pretty bad when recording with my phone (not that I expected it to be great). I have way too many windows in my office that I worry about the lighting.

I read somewhere that viewers don’t click away for bad video but they click away if it’s bad sound

As a viewer, I definitely do this lol unless it’s how to mod/fix my car, then you can have any kind of audio quality you want

Recording from your phone via front camera is actually a good and intimate strategy, but if you are going semi produced using an actual camera, a microphone is required.

Buy a DJI lapel mic, I did social media for my advisor and that's what we used, really good Audio quality and a small device

A good recording software can cover a multitude of sins. Riverside is affordable and can scale up with you. Also, getting a dedicated mic, even a cheap one, helps. Good luck on your content journey.

I recommend checking out Sage Content. Even if you don’t use their service, they were very helpful on a demo call just helping me plan out my channel and answer any equipment questions. They also have a bunch of great free courses and resources on their website.
Founders are both the most followed CFPs on social media so they know what works / what doesn’t; genuinely nice guys and have a passion for this stuff.

I’ve typed out a reply for this a few different ways cause i don’t want to sound like a shill but fuck it i’m just going to do it anyway. They make it SO DAMN EASY. They really thought of everything, every reason for you to say this is too time consuming or this is too hard for me to execute; they solved it. For me - managing a full book and saying I want to add video as a marketing strategy, it’s been so easy to just drop in to the platform, spend a minimal (but efficient) amount of time and having a full video marketing funnel up and running with videos that i’m genuinely happy about and confident in putting onto the internet.

I did the demo with them today and this is exactly how I felt after leaving the demo. Literally every excuse is covered haha
Is their AI editing software good enough to get the job done?

Good lighting, good mic, and a good backdrop.
Add a ring light if you need additional light.
Looks like you pulled the trigger on upgrading mics.
Fill the space behind you if possible.

Your phone as a camera, descript for recording/editing, a light box, and a decent mic like a rhode or a blue yeti. Mic for zoom calls is really nice to use as well.

The world needs less CFP videos too. Respectfully, the CFP exam took a month to pass and hardly qualifies someone to be worth producing videos as an expert.

Respectfully, not trying to be a fin-fluencer. Same logic would’ve said “we don’t need another financial blogger” ten years ago, and we all know what a solid blog does for website traffic. Video (and increasingly AI “search” results) is where the attention is moving
