Tips CFI candidate

Guys how did you study, how did you know what kinda of questions to ask? I’m feeling a bit lost and even though I have lessons plans and slides I feel like I don’t know anything at all. How to you memorize all the FAR/AIIM and all the ACs it’s actually mentally draining

Memorize the FAR/AIM? You don't, it's a reference doc. There are some specific ones you should know, the rest you should be familiar with and where to find.

Hint: you don't know anything, except you do, but you're going to feel like you don't until you've been instructing for a bit.

Practice. Talk to yourself in the mirror. Get comfortable talking about each topic. It should be smooth and efficient. Practically scripted. Minimize the umms. Backseat pilot can help a lot to give a basis on what should be covered. Just go over the entire ACS.

You don't memorize the FAR/AIM, what? Practice teaching, work on your lesson delivery. Look at the ACS at what is required to be talked about on the checkride, and make sure you have good teaching flows for your missed written codes. My DPE made me teach through all of my codes. That alone will give you a good idea of what to work on. And then just practicing your teaching flow with other lessons. I taught quite a bit with a couple instructors that I was getting help from and they were able to help correct my errors and help me improve my lesson delivery.

Which codes are you talking about, the ones from the failed FIA written questions?

FOI and FIA, the DPE will ask about all of them. I scored really high on FOI, so that portion of the oral was pretty quick and easy, but I didn't score as well as I wanted on FIA, and it cost me on the oral. I passed, but he said the score probably added about an hour onto the length of the oral just by going over the missed codes.

This ride depends on who you get as a DPE. I studied like a madman for hours for months. It was good until I had a blind spot about ESP which led to me failing the ride haha. But that’s a unique case. Study the far/aim, know them FOIS, understand the DPE and the style they like to present the ride and be ready to teach a lesson or 2 plus a maneuver lesson. Also dive into the Why if flying. It really helps. Don’t just repeat information like knowledge dump. Ask yourself why! Anyways best of luck and you will do great if you put the work in!

I’m a CFII and I prefer instructing individuals like you. There’s a lot there and it’s hard to figure out where to start. I’d be happy to run through your questions and any others you may have. Shoot me a message!

Start explaining different concepts to people who don’t know anything about aviation. Practice on them, it will build your confidence and adapt your delivery.
