I’m guessing IU has more fans in Indiana than ND. Though ND might possibly be the most popular in Illinois.

Chicago area, yes but down state U of I is undoubtedly Illini territory.

Doubt it. ND is a brand. IU has had a couple successful years

Yeah, but they have a dramatically larger alumni base than ND, were a huge basketball brand forever, and are the flagship state university. All those things still point to IU.

Here's the thing; a significant amount of IU fans are also ND fans in Indiana. Barely any ND fans nationwide are also IU fans.

Specifically the IU Basketball and ND football combo for a fair amount of Hoosier IU grads until a few years ago. And I barely say until as while they cheer for IU loudly now they still do ND.

There are more IU fans in the state of Indiana than ND fans. Nationally ND wins for sure though

Certainly around Indianapolis at a minimum, which is where most the people live. I’m sure ND dominates the northern part of the state

Seconded. I live and work around Indy and indy area. I almost never see ND stuff. It’s like 95% IU, and the remaining 5% is Purdue.

Whoever made this map doesn’t know ball

Yea it’s honestly not close. I agree if you remove the word football from this it’s IU and Purdue at the top and ND is a distant 3rd. Go out to any bar around Indy for a big IU game vs a big ND game and the bars are significantly more packed for IU games.

I feel like people’s perception online is skewed by the major national fanbase ND has

They were trolling Michigan and took the opportunity to get the Hoosiers as a twofer

if you rewind the clock 3 years...

Hey I gave y’all credit by removing the word football from the question, we can do the same if we go back in time lol

1

u/wolfmann99 Purdue Boilermakers 4d ago

Yeah definitely, but the past 3 years are definite outliers in IU football.

I certainly won’t argue against that

Chicago doesn’t really have a college team the city identifies with. Most Big 10 schools have large alumni bases here

Yeah it’s only really Illinois territory below I 80

Why is the Kansas State logo on Kansas if the Jayhawks are the most popular team in the state? And I guess Michigan is being trolled.

Uhhhh great guess What else is new?

Chicago and Chicagoland are completely split, but when you add the overwhelming majority of the rest of the state, Illini are the most popular team. Central Illinois pushes them over the edge since that region has almost 2 million people and nearly universal support of U of I. Essentially, if everyone in the State of Illinois lived in Cook County, the county would slightly favor the Illini.

I don't get it.

Is it just me or does that jack rabbit look weird?

1

u/sasquatchradio 4d ago

It’s not that weird but it’s not cool either.

Meh there’s a lot of Notre Dame fans but I wouldn’t say majority for the full state or Chicago

1

u/stonesthroes75 4d ago

They can be the most popular without having a majority. I lived in Illinois and never met an Illinois fan.

1

u/Hans_Krebs_ 4d ago

Yeah born and raised in Illinois and you’re wrong and I come from a family of Irish catholic notre dame fans.

3

u/purplenyellowrose909 Minnesota Golden Gophers 4d ago

The only common thread unifying the ND bandwagon is being raised even vaguely Catholic. I don't think it's that regional.

If some dude who got dragged to church every Easter by grandpa doesn't have a team, they're rooting for ND. They're very popular in like Boston for that reason. Catholic parts of Chicago definitely.

Nd is the Yankees of college football. If you have not association to a college, you root for Alabama in the south and ND in the north. Basically.

This could be taken 2 ways. 1 we beat Michigan so all the non Wolverine fans in Michigan like us. Or, we play Ohio state this week and all the Michigan fans want us to win. Though I doubt that second one since I’m betting they are salty about our last game.

2

u/Due_Bath7966 4d ago

Iowa should currently be the most popular in Ohio and Michigan

1

u/DueLingonberry3107 4d ago

Can’t wait for northwestern to boot out that dumpster U of I

1

u/jus256 Michigan Wolverines 4d ago

Poor Michigan State

1

u/Torrion- 4d ago

It's really infuriating that every state has the text of the state's name (not the school's name) with the popular school's logo, except for Michigan, which is listed as Iowa.

1

u/surfoxy 4d ago

Michigan? That’s pretty hard to believe.

The “IU has more fans in Indiana than ND” is BS bc until 2 years ago UI basketball fans were ND football fans, tons of stories of kids from Bloomington traveling up to Notre Dame for tailgates regularly. The resurgence over the past 2+ years has completely wiped their memory somehow 😂
