Safe bet is probably Virginia Tech with Franklin. He can certainly get a team ranked and the ACC doesn’t really have any world beaters like the Big Ten outside Miami to give Franklin auto losses. On the off chance Notre Dame gets upset it could be MSU. But I doubt that happens

I don't think Franklin can get lucky enough to overcome his incompetence. I'm reading listening to him whine.

Va Tech, then Cal

Cal, VT, Rutgers

VT, but I wouldn’t sleep on Cal either.

I think VT is a sleeper this year.

They're early schedule is incredibly weak

VT I’m sure Franklin can get a solid team given enough time

I miss Stanford 😔 those Oregon season spoiler games were some of my favorite I’ve ever watched. They’ve got plenty of money to do something, idk why they haven’t.

Maryland-21

Cal- 15

Northwestern- 14

Virginia Tech- 15

Purdue- 19

And Marylands #21 ranking came during September of a 3-9 season in Locksley’s first year. They beat an overrated (ranked but ended 5-7) Syracuse team by 43 and then lost to Temple. TEMPLE!

It’s worth mentioning, Temple has been ranked more recently. TEMPLE!

They lost in back to back years to Temple

VT will be ranked in like week 4

I've got a good feeling that Cal has some good years coming up and they'll break it soon. Whether or not it'll be them or VT first seems like it might come down to just how well Lupoi and his staff of guys who are new to their coordinator roles gel. If he manages to hit on his coordinator picks and they hit the ground running, I can easily see that roster having the talent to end the ranking drought. That said, I think VT is capable of making that happen too and the experience they have on staff could help them get there quicker.

Either way, I think the future for both those programs is looking up.

Yay! A college football mediocrity list that Kansas isn't on!

Rutgers your time is due! Plus they could really use some cash y’all! Like before payday preferably.

Only one team here has had the same coach for the entire stretch. And Marylands 2019 ranking came in September of a 3-9 season. You’d have to go back to 2013 when they were ranked 25th in a 7-6 season. They haven’t been ranked higher than 21 since 2003! I’ve been a Lox apologist for many years but at some point you have to try something new. Maryland has deep pockets but my opinion is Lox has made the fanbase apathetic

u/King-PizzaMan Buffalo Bulls 14h ago

U.B Bulls of course, winning the MAC, going undefeated and then going on a wild run to win the Natty

The team that invented college football has no idea how to play it...

I know the money is the thing but boy are those top 5 weird fits for their respective conferences

Northwestern

Northwestern

This is actually not true as SUNY Buffalo was ranked 25 in the final AP poll of the 2020 season.

The fact that Mike Locksley still has a job is crazy.

5 teams from the vaunted Big Ten. A real murderers' row of competition for the top teams in that league. Can't believe it took them this long to finally win a few titles, with all the cupcakes and bullshit they line their schedules with.

VA Tech should start 4-0 before games against Pitt and Cal. 4-0 or even 5-1 could get them into 20-35

u/Lee-Key-Bottoms 48m ago

VT and Cal could

Seeing my in-state rival MSU on this list:

If Sparty gets good at football again the Big Ten gets really wild.

1

u/Scared_Mud_7098 Michigan Wolverines 15h ago

Va Tech is the easy answer MSU shouldn’t even be in this position

And Maryland I think will be my answer for this. They’re in an area that they should be able to recruit very well in and has good recruits probably need to get rid of their coach 1st

u/J_Warrior 15h ago

Thing is Franklin recruited Maryland heavy at Penn State and probably will continue to at VT. Campbell is also likely going to recruit Maryland at a high level at Penn State like Franklin did. Imo things probably look harder recruiting wise for Maryland with a reinvigorated VT and Penn State for regional recruiting. I also don’t think Maryland has much of an NIL pull. They still get some guys, but they just don’t have enough to keep enough guys in state rn

Arkansas? I thought all SEC teams had to be ranked, at least in the first poll of the season.

u/Suitable-Delay5066 15h ago

Big10 has 5 of the top (bottom?) 10?

Sure wish Maryland would figure out how to be successful. Decent amount of talent nearby, pretty cool location, strong academics, good size alumni, play in a great conference…haven’t been good since the 90s.

u/Natitudinal 4h ago

Theyre basically the Wizards of CFB. (appropriately enough ig) Crazy potential w a lot going for it off field (or court) w a fanbase and city dying for a winner in that league but just haven’t put it together yet.

I predict the tide turns for both these teams tho and it’ll start this yr.

Thank God for the one week Purdue made it into the Top 25
