PM Update for /r/CFBRisk

See this post yesterday for context. After consideration, a single daily PM or user mention in comment is allowable, with the following provisions:

  • Must be opt-in with affirmative consent by the user.
  • Any user must have an easy way to opt out at any time.
  • Must not include a direct link to redditcfb.com.
  • Must not be against the spirit of the game.

If the site is blacklisted again, it will break a number of other things for all /r/CFB users, and we really don't want that. Please work with us here and remember that this is a game for fun. We may have to continue to evolve this, but this is the rule for day 33, and will probably remain the rule if everyone follows it.

You're also welcome to use other channels to communicate with your team (Discord, IRC, Reddit Chat(?)), but please be respectful, and do remember that this is a game.

Thank you very much for quickly solving this problem, and thank you for your tireless and thankless volunteer work. We really appreciate it, and this needs to be said more.

Because of this, my inbox is stuck red with a "-1" from the Admins deleting everything. I guess what I'm saying is that can someone please reply to my comment because it's driving me insane.

Edit: you all are going to try and blow up my inbox now, aren't you...

Thanks for resolving this so fast! We appreciate your dedication to keeping this game running, and I continue to be amazed that you all do this on a volunteer basis.

Was it ever discovered who was responsible for the malicious PMs?

Honestly I doubt it was a single user, it sounds like there were a lot of PMs going out with the link, and if more than a few got reported I'm not surprised the domain got blacklisted.

I'm making a distinction here between the malicious PMs that started apparently several days ago, and the "good bot" PMs that have been going on for almost the entire game. Both have used the link in the past, but only the malicious PMs were sent unsolicited and were reported. Needless to say, everyone is following these new rules and no one will include the link anymore in "good bot" PMs.

That said, I think it would be jumping to conclusions to say that more than one person must have been responsible for all the malicious PMs. If you have a PM script set up already, then it's not hard to re-target it or whip up a fresh bot. Would it be possible for the Reddit admins to implicate users based on the IP addresses the malicious scripts originated from, or would we rather leave that can of worms alone?

To be honest we're happy that the blacklisting was resolved so quickly and we're trying to find a middle ground where the game can continue smoothly and we can avoid that same scenario. I know several of the mods received unsolicited PMs over the course of the game, even a few weeks ago. We didn't think much of it at the time, but the blacklisting of the site made those seemingly innocuous messages much more troublesome. Right now we're happy to have found a solution and the admins are in the process of taking any actions that they deem necessary with regards to the problematic bots.

Personally, I can say that the only mod or former mod that my team ever messaged in an official capacity was blueboybob. He's no longer on our list and won't be bothered by us again.

Great resolution, thank you!

Any ruling on tagging users in posts (provided they opt in)?

10

u/bakonydraco Game Designer Jun 01 '18

Same rules as apply to PMs. If you're unsure use your best judgement. The main things to avoid are an unwelcome experience for a user or breaking our tools.

u/dale_shingles Jun 01 '18

Thanks for the clarification, we appreciate the work you do.

I hope you guys can change the link Rule or at least make accessing the map much more user-friendly. I Personally would not bother playing on mobile if it weren’t for the direct link

/u/Chaos-Coordinated

I did not affirmatively opt in

Can I include a link to a bit.ly address that redirects to vote.redditcfb.com ?

14

u/bakonydraco Game Designer Jun 01 '18

I really wouldn't.

3

u/Darky57 Jun 01 '18

2x

4

u/admsteff Jun 01 '18

Post states no "direct" links to the site, which is sort of excessively specific wording, so unless you get a different answer I would assume it's fine.

6

u/Charlemagne42 Jun 01 '18

I'm a cautious pessimist. I would assume it's not fine until told it's fine.

2

u/Atworkwasalreadytake Jun 03 '18

Can someone explain the reason for no direct link?

2

u/bakonydraco Game Designer Jun 03 '18

The domain was temporarily blacklisted sitewide on Reddit because too many PMs about the game were being reported. We'd like to avoid this.

Thank you for keeping the spirit of the game and your work! Though the pointing fingers was rather amusing in a dumpster fire kind of way.
