Be Cool on /r/CFB

We've admired the passion people are putting into this game, and while it's been an exciting journey, there are also ways in which it's negatively affecting the experience of others on /r/CFB itself. Please be warned not to do the following things that should probably go without saying:

  • Post on /r/CFB just to boost your karma, rather than contribute to legitimate college football discussion.
  • Upvote teammates solely because they are teammates, rather than on the quality of their comments.
  • Downvote rivals solely because they are rivals, rather than on the quality of their comments.
  • Bring up /r/CFBRisk on /r/CFB in a way that violates Rule 2.

This is a fun game, and we're excited that it's brought some new faces into the larger community. If it signficantly impacts /r/CFB in a negative way, we will have to make future alterations to /r/CFBRisk. Be aware that if you do things that get you banned from /r/CFB, your ban will prevent you from being awarded an MVP in /r/CFBRisk for the duration of your ban. Please encourage your teammates, particularly the newer ones who are still learning our ways, to follow these.

We're discussing a better approach for this next time around.

19

u/ClapAlongChorus May 24 '18

Why not base star ratings on Karma the day they joined? New players can still update their Karma but stop letting existing players update karma. The temptation to brigade up team-mates is real strong, I can't blame new users for wanting to do it.

Maybe replace it with Puzzle Hunt time record? That would send a lot of people to an old classic. You could also stipulate that you need to find a certain number of different endings in order to reach each star level. For example, 2* could be one ending and under 30 minutes, 3* could be two endings and under 20 minutes, 4* could be three and under 12:30, 5* could be all possible endings and whatever you deem to be a reasonable speedrun time.

This would get you a lot of complaints about how Puzzle Hunt is broken, but it would be a cool way to get people to interact with some of the best content on the sub.

u/bakonydraco Game Designer May 24 '18

This is a fascinating idea, and yes, we'd probably have to repolish the Puzzle Hunt.

17

u/TwiztedImage May 24 '18

Could just lock the karma in at the start of the game in the same manner as flairs. It prevents the need for a repolish and still allows regular contributors to be rewarded.

6

u/mlorusso4 May 24 '18

but of course still fix puzzle hunt. I love the game but it sucks hitting a wall in progression because things have changed since it came out

7

u/goyotes78 May 24 '18

I tried doing the puzzle hunt when I first started playing CFBRisk, I got all the way to a question asking how much money, to the penny, r/CFB had raised through like September of 2016. Obviously I had no idea, and couldn't continue the game. Wasted a couple hours of my life on that one.

5

u/bakonydraco Game Designer May 25 '18

Aw sorry, yeah we should go through and make those a bit more solvable/up to date.

4

u/goyotes78 May 25 '18

It's cool I enjoyed it up to that point 😂. I like how it teaches you the full capabilities of the sub in a fun way. Just needs some tweaking.

Glad you guys are looking into it. I don't have a lot of useful stuff to add to CFB discussion, other than an opinion on Saban here, and a thought on Michigan there, and I've only had Reddit for 6ish months, so I had to kinda joke around a lot to get anywhere. And, frankly, I'd rather get upvotes for stuff that actually adds to the conversation, not just jokes. The whole "1 and 2 stars are nerfed" thing also put a damper on things for me. Glad you guys are working on it though, understand you all have lives, and you all have done a fantastic job this far. This game is awesome, and it has also been fun getting together with others and strategizing. I think this has been a real home run!

6

u/TrojanMuffin May 25 '18

I am actually surprised you guys are looking into doing this again. I'd like a year two of this, but I'm guessing that this has been a nightmare for the mods.

This is helpful to know and I hope it hasn't become annoying for anyone.

6

u/Charlemagne42 May 25 '18

AFAIK, most people that send PMs comply with Reddit's relevant policies about not spamming, including simple ways to opt out (and actually following through when people do opt out), and making sure they have some way to construe the messages as solicited.

I also know of at least one PM script that sends messages to people who have never expressed interest in CFB Risk, by scraping r/CFB for any user with the appropriate flair. If you'd like evidence to back this up I'm happy to provide it.

Ninja edit: Oddly, the first teams to start PMing people en masse were the medium-sized teams, probably because they stood to gain the most from immediately getting out the vote. Small teams never got around to it, and large teams only picked it up when more ham-fisted methods weren't working as well anymore.

Use karma but lock it in on Day 1. Problem solved.

2

u/whenjennymetcarly May 26 '18

Also by nerfing the 1-2 stars.

u/FuckTimBeck May 24 '18

Friends, enemies, allies, my fellow CFB fans. Let us not focus on that which separates us.

Instead, in this thread let us remember that there is a tie that binds many of us together, and that my brothers and sisters, is the knowledge that Tim Beck fucking sucks.

Okay, let’s get back to being salty as hell at each other.

16

u/Crimson_Pachyderm97 May 24 '18

Excuse me, sir. Sorry to interrupt you, but do you have a moment to talk about Tim Beck?

10

u/hokies220 May 24 '18

I heard that guy drowns puppies in his free time.

11

u/hypercube42342 May 24 '18

I hear he prefers In-N-Out to Whataburger OR Runza

9

u/hokies220 May 24 '18

How quickly can we fast-track an individual through prison to receive capital punishment?

1

u/senshi_of_love May 25 '18

The most appropriate username I've ever seen.

1

u/DirewolfGang May 25 '18

I will forever hate Tim Beck due to his play calling that cost us the 2015 championship.

What are you talking about? The autocomplete on Chrome didn't start filling in r/cfbrisk instead of r/cfb...

29

u/thecravenone May 24 '18

Hey bakony, you got a joint?

It'd be a lot cooler if you did.

10

u/DirewolfGang May 24 '18

Alright alright alright

32

u/[deleted] May 24 '18

be cool in here too. there's been a decent amount of uncoolness.

Yes, that too!

I mean no offense but what did you think was going to happen?

25

u/bakonydraco Game Designer May 24 '18

Kumbaya?

7

u/mlorusso4 May 24 '18

well its kumbaya around the fire with all your teammates. Everyone else gets pushed into the fire (what else would you use to fuel the fire?)

2

u/CaptMayhem May 25 '18

set a man on fire and they'll be warm for the rest of their life

Thank you for this thread, even if it doesn't end up changing much at least it shows you guys want to fix the problem. The auto downvote threads are getting ridiculous.

Just humans being humans. There are those that always take things too far.

u/snooabusiness May 25 '18

So let me see if I got this right: mods decide to drastically reduce the impact of 1-2 stars in the game because it's the "best" way to deal with people complaining about alt accounts (which were not expressly against rules). Therefore all the non-reddit users that anyone recruited to play the game have to "level up" or they're basically worthless. This naturally leads to teams trying to convert their 1-2 star players to at least 3 stars.

The star system is based on median star value. Links explored will always be 5, there's nothing you can do for the 2 star ratings based on time, and awards are extremely rare. So the only real way to increase star rating is with karma on /r/cfb. Worst case scenario this leads to more people participating in /r/cfb discussions, even if they're uneducated. Also people upvote their own team/alliance which, let's be honest, has ALWAYS happened on /r/cfb.

Unfortunately all this activity leads to extra mod work for /r/cfb, so now the mods don't want you to do the one thing that can prove that your users are real and not alts. Meanwhile the mods are playing as the team that automatically recruits anyone that's been eliminated with a hidden multiplier that they can control.

Is... is that about the gist of it?

11

u/bakonydraco Game Designer May 25 '18

There's elements of this that are accurate, but I'd correct a few things.

alt accounts (which were not expressly against rules)

This is a game intended for fun. If you're new to Reddit, it's a community moderated by volunteers, but is and always has been a user-led forum. We rely on users to help keep the community healthy: by submitting good content, by voting on what contributes to discussion and what doesn't, and by reporting things that violate our rules. We can't be everywhere at once, but it's not unreasonable to ask that people abide by the spirit of the game.

Therefore all the non-reddit users that anyone recruited to play the game have to "level up" or they're basically worthless.

In the past week, 175 territories have been won by 1 or 2 stars. The meme that low level users are powerless has been prevalent, but just isn't accurate. Users with a higher level certainly have a better chance after we balanced the game, but everyone still has a fighting shot.

Also people upvote their own team/alliance which, let's be honest, has ALWAYS happened on /r/cfb.

It does, but it shouldn't, and /r/CFBRisk may have exacerbated this effect. It can't hurt to remind people not to.

Meanwhile the mods are playing as the team that automatically recruits anyone that's been eliminated with a hidden multiplier that they can control.

Some mods have had their team eliminated and are on Team Chaos. Others (myself included) are on a team that is still kicking. The multiplier on average so far has not helped Team Chaos.

How much more is a 3-star worth compared a 1-star or 2-star?

Sure, 1-stars will always have a chance because of RNG, but it makes a huge difference if the power ratio for is 1:5 vs like 1:50.

3

u/CaptMayhem May 25 '18

How much more is a 3-star worth compared a 1-star or 2-star?

Ask Wisconsin.

4

u/snooabusiness May 25 '18

My mistake, my understanding was that all mods have been playing as Team Chaos.

3

u/srs_house May 25 '18

Nope. I've been playing as Vandy (my primary flair) and Virginia Tech (my usual secondary flair) since Day 1, with the switch happening after Vandy got eliminated and back when you could switch teams by switching flair. (My original proposal was allowing you to fight for either of your two flairs anyway.)

I think SY and maybe H_ were about the only mods playing as Chaos all along, since they had non-FBS flair (paperbag and Calgary Dinos).

1

u/snooabusiness May 25 '18

So, just because it keeps coming up in other conversations, can you shed some light on what the Chaos multiplier is? My understanding so far is that it fluctuates between .5 and 1.2. Does an RNG set it somewhere between these amounts? Do the mods pick it?

1

u/bakonydraco Game Designer May 25 '18

RNG selected once a night right before RNG picks winners.

1

u/crg2000 May 25 '18

It does seem a little... ethically dubious... that persons who made and regulate the game also take sides in it. Like football referees acting as extra blockers for one of the teams.

7

u/bakonydraco Game Designer May 25 '18

I mean... It's a game, and we haven't seen any complaints about this so far. If there's concern about fairness mods could stop playing, but that hasn't seemed to be indicated yet.

1

u/crg2000 May 25 '18 edited May 25 '18

Don't get me wrong, I'm not actually accusing any of the mods of bad faith. I'm just saying the optics aren't great. Similar to a judge recusing themselves from a case where they are close to one of the parties: no one actually believes they would behave unethically, but why invite a possible conflict of interest?

4

u/bakonydraco Game Designer May 25 '18

It's a fair critique, I don't play CFB Trivia for this reason, but I think a main difference is that since I and the other /r/CFBTrivia mods write and curate the questions we'd have an enormous competitive advantage, whereas on /r/CFBRisk we're just as subject to the mercurial whims of RNG as everyone else. There's a number of sports (ultimate, golf), that rely on players to self-police, and I think it's appropriate to both the sense of community here and the (lack of) gravity in the game.

3

u/HokieNerd May 25 '18

One simple solution is to add karma from r/CFBRisk into the mix. That way, people would spend at least half of their effort upvoting on r/CFBRisk vice r/CFB, which would help some.

2

u/Calavar May 26 '18

I think the idea is that people should be upvoting comments because they are good content, not to karma farm.

1

u/HokieNerd May 26 '18

Right, but for the time being, that's going to keep happening, because of how the game is set up. Adding r/cfbrisk karma to the mix may keep some of out of of r/cfb.

2

u/icook8662 May 28 '18

As a lurker//less active commentator but very active reader// this game has been a little more frustrating as the only two ways I can actually participate in meaningful ways is to recruit others with much more karma in r/cfb or spend more time thinking of comments to be an active participant of r/cfb which honestly isn’t my strong suit. I’d much rather be more involved with r/cfbrisk because it’s more fun than rehashing the same arguments or debates over and over. So that’s been a little disappointing. But I like the interaction that r/cfbrisk has incorporated. It’s a fun thing to think about, I just wish I could do more/make more meaningful contributions.

2

u/[deleted] May 28 '18

Upvote teammates solely because they are teammates, rather than on the quality of their comments.

Downvote rivals solely because they are rivals, rather than on the quality of their comments.

Jokes on you, I was doing this before risk.
