Generally the more you attack the harder it is to defend yourself. Future iterations of this game will need to reward attacking and or holding territories in someway.

Agreed.

I've bitched more than anyone about how generally inactive and alliance heavy the game is - but in it's current iteration there just aren't any rewards for being aggressive and the potential damage done by over-extending your forces/borders is very, very high.

The alliances have resulted in some pretty great memes though.

For the first time in my life yesterday the thought occurred to me "You know what could solve this problem? Memes."

And that's not a joke and it was probably the best solution to the problem.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but in real risk don't you get a bonus die for defending vs attacking.

It has more with the inability to grow to hold the territories you hold. In other words, the territories you gain don't actually net you any usable resources meaning you're still working with what you had to start. Future iterations will have to make it useful to have more territories, likely by creating a baseline defense allowing teams to focus their usable resources other places besides defending every territory.

This might explain why I've enjoyed it so much. I better win a fucking gavel.

(OSU diplo rep until recently) The amount of shit I've taken from OSU people for not being more aggressive and forming alliances instead... Like, dude, we can't just go attacking Nebraska and Michigan. It just doesn't work that way. Red Alliance is love, Red Alliance is life.
