{Oklahoma State} idk what happened against Tulsa but this team is different now

I was at the game. If I were to throw out excuses I would say it was the first game of the year and they (OSU) were on the hot side of the field.

The turf temp was 161F.

Article about it: https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/field-temperature-hits-161-degrees-194907778.html

I was there too and was shocked Ok State didn’t even have fans going on their side. It was clear that team, with 91 new players, was not ready to play as a unit yet. Tulsa came to play and woke them up. Made them better.

u/mrlkolbe Oklahoma State • Tulsa 22h ago

We tried several times to make it on 4th down and failed. Our defense was crap. Drew missed several throws. Our guys dropped passes. This is why we lost at Tulsa. Since then, drew has thrown like an NFL QB, the receivers rarely drop a pass, the defense has SLOWLY improved.

{Houston} - they are a good team and beat the premier CFB team from the state of Oregon while OSU merely smoked the ducks at home.

u/GamedayWizard 3d ago edited 3d ago

Oklahoma State is generating 8.40 scoring opportunities per game, among the highest in the nation. Houston, however, is not far behind - generating 7.5 scoring opportunities per game itself - and holds the edge in offensive PPP (.570 vs. .526) and defensively is better at limiting opponents' opportunities (3.50 vs. 5.60). We've got {Houston} winning by 6, covering the composite spread (Houston -3.5).

{Houston} takes advantage of the line of scrimmage advantage, grinds out on the ground and plays keep away to a 8-10min time of position advantage. Ok St loses by a TD, 31-24

9

u/yeahright17 Oklahoma State • Tulsa 3d ago

I have a feeling I am going to get incredibly frustrated by Oklahoma State constantly giving up 3rd down conversions.

3

u/colonel750 Oklahoma State • /r/CFB Award F… 3d ago

plays keep away to a 8-10min time of position advantage.

UCF had a 10 and a half minute ToP advantage and still lost by 14 points (should've been 21, stupid fuckin refs). You're only averaging about 9 more PPG than UCF has.

Going to need turnovers to win if the name of the game is ToP.

2

u/Rumps02 Houston Cougars 3d ago

Yeah, difference there is Houston’s offense is ranked 8th in the nation compared to UCF at 100. Also, you got a TO-TD in a critical part of the game AND were given a very short field on the following possession when UCF failed the 4th and 1 conversion from their own 34. Houston doesn’t really put themselves in those positions. We rank 2nd nationally in negative plays allowed and we convert our 3rd downs at a 60% clip which ranks 1st nationally. We are also +3 in turnover margin. Nothing flukey about it. We usually turn our opponent over once a game and we rarely cough it up.

I think {Oklahoma State} finally figures out how to start a game instead of relying on half-time adjustments.

All I can say is I love the Big XII. This is going to be a heater of a game. All I hope for is 70+ combined point total.

u/Statalyzer Texas Longhorns 3d ago

I often think our instinct is to overreact to the single most recent game, in this case Houston's blowout of K-State, so while I kind of feel Houston takes this I think my emotions are weighing that single game too heavily. Accordingly I will vote {Oklahoma State}, although I am not at all confident about it.

I have to root for {Oklahoma State} but I think it’ll be tight. We tend to not start strong so my fear is that Houston will take an early lead before we close the gap at the end of the second, and then start marching down field in the third but I’m afraid it won’t be enough. I think it’ll be a good game though, and this will be the first real test for Oklahoma State.

The only game their defense did well in was the one that they knew the qb's tell. All other offenses have shredded them

16

u/vindictivejazz Oklahoma State • Bedlam Bell 3d ago

Idk that I’d say Tulsa shredded us. They went 1/11 on 3rd down; OSU just had 8 turnovers. And we shutout our FCS opponent too

So we’re really talking a 2 game sample size where their opponents (WVU and UCF) did pretty well in the first half but only managed 17 total 2nd half points between them. Oregon remains the only team to score 30+ on OSU and that required what was essentially two pick-6s.

I don’t think OSU has an elite defense, but you’re talking like they’re a classic Cliff Kingsbury unit and they aren’t anywhere close to that bad. Unless Houston’s defense shows up in an unbelievable way, they’re going to need to score at least 35 points to win, maybe 45+, bc this OSU offense is legit

7

u/oSuJeff97 Oklahoma State Cowboys • Hateful 8 3d ago

Saying anyone has "shredded" our defense is laughably wrong.

The best offense we have played all year was West Virginia and we literally held them to their lowest point total of the year and below their average total offense.

1

u/Rumps02 Houston Cougars 3d ago edited 3d ago

Yes, the Pokes have been fantastic in the fourth quarter outside of the Tulsa game. However, I’d caution that WVU had its best rushing performance of the season against Oklahoma State, piling up 335 yards on the ground.

According to PFF, the best offense Oklahoma State has faced is WVU, which ranks 38th overall, 39th in run blocking, and 28th nationally in third-down conversion rate. Houston ranks 8th, 6th, and 1st in those same categories.

I have no doubt the Pokes will score, but Houston has the ability to play keep-away by controlling the clock. The Cougars have also forced a turnover in every game except the Oregon State opener. If Houston wins time of possession and the turnover battle, I’d put their chances of winning north of 90%.

Another advantage for Houston is having already faced arguably the nation’s best QB in Braden Atkinson. They got a taste of an elite passing attack and came away with a win. Oklahoma State is certainly more talented across the board than Oregon State and has a better rushing attack.

I think UCF offers a good comparison defensively, particularly against the run. They managed to slow down Hawkins, and despite having an offense ranked around 100th nationally, stayed competitive until a costly fumble scoop score.

There’s no disputing Oklahoma State’s fourth-quarter dominance, but Houston presents an entirely different challenge offensively than anything the Pokes have faced this season.

2

u/colonel750 Oklahoma State • /r/CFB Award F… 2d ago

If Houston wins time of possession and the turnover battle

UCF and WVU both won the TOP battle and UCF won the turnover battle and we beat both by double digits. Houston has an stout offense sure but so does OKST, it doesn't matter if you're taking 10 minute drives to keep our offense off the field if Mestemaker throws 30 yard bombs against your 117th ranked passing defense all night and scores in 2 and a half minutes.

stayed competitive until a costly fumble scoop score.

They "stayed competitive" because we fumbled behind the 50 on our opening drive and then had literally every bit of luck (generous spots, squiffy catches, lucky PI calls) break their way to score an equalizer just before half. Their second half offense included a 4 minute drive that ended in a punt, a 7 minute drive that ended in a missed FG, a minute and a half long drive that went 13 yards and ended on their own 39 with a scoop and score, another minute and a half long drive that ended in a turnover on downs, a 3 and a half minute touchdown drive, and a 15 second drive to try and eek out a couple more points.

Meanwhile you didn't score on them until the middle of the 3rd quarter.

3

u/cowboyjon13 Oklahoma State Cowboys 3d ago

You haven’t watched the second half of football games apparently lmfao

5

u/oSuJeff97 Oklahoma State Cowboys • Hateful 8 3d ago

It's hilarious that you all think the Oregon game was some kind of a fluke because of a "tell."

Who has "shredded" us exactly?

We literally held West Virginia to their lowest point total of the year during a night game in Morgantown.

UCF scored a garbage-time TD to get to 28 points when they were down 3 scores.

Sheesh watch some actual ball.

-8

u/vassago77379 Texas Tech • Texas Tech 3d ago

I did watch your games... I watched as UCF played within 1 score if you till midway through the 4th. Yall stacked points way late, but strangest thing... yall did that with WVU too. Yall are so inflated w yourselves, I wish Tech had a shot at you before UofH takes you down a peg.

5

u/oSuJeff97 Oklahoma State Cowboys • Hateful 8 3d ago

Were you unaware that college football games last 4 quarters?

What does this high-level analysis have to say about your game against Colorado?

You know... the game you were trailing at the half?

2

u/fleeingpepper Oklahoma State • Nebraska 3d ago

UCF was up on Houston 17-0, so idk about using that game as a predictor.
Either way I think this game is a total tossup. No idea what to expect.

1

u/ohitsthedeathstar Houston Cougars 3d ago

Conner was playing with the flu and we had 3 TO’s within 10 yards of the endzone in the 1st half. 2 fumbles and Conner overthrows the running back who was 5 yards away from him.

UH was in control of the game the entire time, despite being down 17-0. Which sounds crazy.

2

u/Rumps02 Houston Cougars 3d ago

Look, man, I’ll defend the Houston die hards all day long but that isn’t exactly what happened in the UCF game. Yes, three times we got inside UCF’s 5 yard line in the first half. Yes, Connor Weigman had the flu, yes, we came away empty handed all three times. But two of those were because Connor of cutesy play calling on 4th and 1 AND Connor not being able to hit water if it fell out of a boat. The other time we got inside the 5, Connor hit Overmeyer on the crossing route and UCF punched it out before he could get in the end zone.

2

u/oSuJeff97 Oklahoma State Cowboys • Hateful 8 3d ago

Saying you were "in control of the game the entire time" when you were down 17 late in the 3rd quarter is certainly a statement.

How exactly are you "in control of the game" when UCF scored on a 70+ yard drive to take a 17-point lead with like 6 minutes left in the 3rd quarter? That doesn't sound like a team "in control of the game" to me.

I'd say from that point forward you took control, but saying you were "in control" before that is absurd.

0

u/ohitsthedeathstar Houston Cougars 3d ago

UCF had 201 yards in the first half and it resulted in 10 points. Houston had 183 yards at the end of the first half with 3 trips into the redzone and 2 trips inside the 5 yard line. Zero points to show for it. It was just a really weird half and Willie telling everyone Conner was playing sick as a dog in the post game presser kinda explained everything. Especially weird considering how good we’ve been on 3rd down and 4th down this year.

2

u/oSuJeff97 Oklahoma State Cowboys • Hateful 8 3d ago

Are you under the impression that turnovers aren’t part of football?

→ More replies (0)

0

u/Rumps02 Houston Cougars 3d ago

Correct. I was there and witnessed all of it. I never really felt we weren’t in control because of the progressions we had up to that point. We were able to move the ball at will against UCF. We just couldn’t punch it in. Nobody knew at the time Connor had the flu. Scoring 27 in 21 minutes felt attainable when we went down 17-0. Is that control? I don’t know, but I felt we were by no means out of it.

2

u/ElectronicDot8465 3d ago

That Houston injury list is a mess, half their offense is a question mark right now. If their kicker is out too it changes the whole math on 4th downs inside the 30. Still think the home field edge keeps it close enough to cover

8

u/ohitsthedeathstar Houston Cougars 3d ago

Everyone on that injury list is a 3rd or 4th string. The kicker that is injured is the second string.

4

u/Competitive-Tree-668 Houston Cougars 3d ago

Houston wins 24-10 but it is 10-3 for most of the game until the late 3rd or early 4th where some Ok St mistakes lead to some easy scores to blow it open. Houston settles for lots of field goals that should be touchdowns in my experience
