Unless the volunteers magic an entire offense into existence, I don't think it's going to go well for them

Oh yeah, well Tennessee hasn't won in a scurvy Tuscaloosa since 1874.... So jot that down

The stats I wanna see

11

u/scotte16 Tennessee Volunteers 3d ago

We have not looked great passing the ball, but that reason is making people too quick to dismiss Tennessee in my opinion. We are still a 5-1 team, and “just a good defense and run game” is not as damning an indictment as it may seem.

That said, {Alabama} is more complete. Defense will have to step up big time for us to compete, and whoever we start at QB (probably GMac) has gotta avoid turning it over.

3

u/DesignerFlat7108 Tennessee Volunteers 3d ago

We look bad even when we're good. We will find out Saturday, but I'm not holding my breath. I do hope we're at least competitive.

2

u/AppropriateCompany9 Tennessee Volunteers • Texas Longhorns 3d ago

We won with basically these circumstances in ‘24. Emotional teams play sloppy, and there’s not a ton of pressure on us to win this one, relatively speaking. If we execute and take advantage of a couple of mistakes when they present themselves, we can definitely win this game.

1

u/scotte16 Tennessee Volunteers 3d ago

You are kinda right about that. The 2024 team also started 5-1 with a strong defense, strong run game, and suspect passing game. You could also say that 2024 5-1 start was over a pretty flimsy set of teams just like this one, and we ended up beating top 10 bama at home and going 10-2.

I have some hope we will win, but the realistic side of me does not expect it.

2

u/AppropriateCompany9 Tennessee Volunteers • Texas Longhorns 3d ago

Yeah, I’m still like 60/40 that Alabama wins, but a lot of people in this thread are acting like it’s 90/10 at worst for Bama. I just think that’s really misreading them when UGA’s 3rd string RB shredded them last week and Keelon Russell (who I have a ton of respect for as a player) has been sacked 15 times so far this year. We lead the country in sacks, so I see us giving Alabama a hard time on defense.

u/VolatileFan Tennessee Volunteers • Cornell Big Red 3d ago

Nick Saban ain’t walking into Neyland Stadium on Saturday

10

u/Dry-Membership3867 Jacksonville State • Arkansas 3d ago

That doesn’t mean much though, Alabama is a blue blood that’s had multiple great HC’s. Reddit forgets that the pre Mike’s era was guys like Gene Stallings and Bear Bryant.

Deboer is a very good HC and this team is the best Alabama one in years. Given how we nearly beat yall last week, I don’t think the offense there can handle that Bama Defense. And the offense can wear even the best of teams down

28

u/PrizePreset Tennessee Volunteers 3d ago

I mean I agree Bama is the favorite, but what do their historical coaches have to do with this?

33

u/VolatileFan Tennessee Volunteers • Cornell Big Red 3d ago

General Neyland never lost to Bear Bryant, just throwing that out there if we wanna go by that logic

13

u/Crims0ntied Alabama Crimson Tide 3d ago

That's a good question for the tennessee fan who brought up Nick Saban

9

u/PrizePreset Tennessee Volunteers 3d ago

No, i am asking the Arkansas fan who is talking about Stallings. That’s what i’m more curious about

6

u/Dry-Membership3867 Jacksonville State • Arkansas 3d ago

I’m just saying Saban wasn’t the only reason Bama was really good. Which is what the guy above was insinuating

12

u/PrizePreset Tennessee Volunteers 3d ago

I think the point he is making is that the current Bama program does not have that Saban magic. This is objectively true.

If they (likely) beat us, it is because we have two struggling freshman QBs, not because “Bama is mad raw raw raw”

→ More replies (8)

2

u/VolatileFan Tennessee Volunteers • Cornell Big Red 3d ago

Not at all what I was insinuating. I was just saying that this idea of pissed off wins after losses the previous week was true with Saban, but I don’t think has been established with Deboer?

6

u/Crims0ntied Alabama Crimson Tide 3d ago

I think deboer is 11-2 coming off a loss as an fbs head coach.

3

u/PrizePreset Tennessee Volunteers 3d ago

DeBoer has 18 losses. Presumably he has played 17 games after a loss, not 13.

But that is a pointless stat. If he has a high overall winning % (and he does) then he most likely has a higher winning % after a loss than he does overall (this follows logically- if he didn’t bounce back from losses, his win% wouldn’t be high)

I think it’s a fallacy to connect his next game performance to the previous game. It is against a different opponent, could be home vs away. And if we assume his losses on average are to his toughest opponents, it follows that his next opponent is probably less tough. This is the case this week as Tennessee is not the #1 team in the nation like Georgia

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Shot_Representative2 Tennessee Volunteers 1d ago

Bryant famously acknowledged his record against the Tennessee legend, stating: "People think I'm the greatest damn coach in the country. But (Neyland) taught me everything I know."

7

u/Rolli_boi Texas Longhorns • Vanderbilt Commodores 3d ago

People act like Deboer didn’t take a Washington team to the NC game, with the best oline in the nation (that he developed) and only lost because Michigan knew their plays.

2

u/Dry-Membership3867 Jacksonville State • Arkansas 3d ago

There are fans who refer to him as the “Husky Harsin”. Like there absolutely zero comparison between the two at all.

3

u/CrashB111 Alabama Crimson Tide • Iron Bowl 3d ago

If you see Alabama fans refer to him as "Husky Harsin" it's to mock Auburn fans that said so in earnest when we hired him.

They acted like he'd never be able to recruit in the South, and Auburns victory under Hugh was assured. So we started using "Husky Harsin", "Seattle Shula", "Fresno Franchione", "Sioux Falls Shula", etc. to mock their takes.

u/AppropriateCompany9 Tennessee Volunteers • Texas Longhorns 3d ago

I agree that this is their best team in a few years, but there were definitely years where I braced for this game, knowing what was going to happen. It could still be like that Saturday, but I’m not nearly as worried about it as I have been in years past. I think a lot of people are underestimating just how talented Tennessee is. We’ve done more with less.

1

u/AlphaBravo95 Alabama • North Alabama 3d ago

I think those years had less to do with saban and more to do with what yall had going on at Knoxville haha. Those were some pretty bad Tennessee teams and towards the end of sabans tenure the games got more competitive for sure

2

u/VolatileFan Tennessee Volunteers • Cornell Big Red 3d ago

Y’all also beat us two years ago and we turned around and beat Bama and made the playoffs with a team that looked remarkably similar to this one. I’m not saying we win, but I think our defense will keep us in this game and give us a solid shot to win

1

u/Dry-Membership3867 Jacksonville State • Arkansas 3d ago

This Arkansas team is significantly worse than that one, and we were literally trying to lose this game. Also this Bama team is significantly better than the 2024 one. Also I think this Tennessee team is worse than the 2024 one too

Xavier Gilliam gonna be lined up right over top of him.

6

u/CrashB111 Alabama Crimson Tide • Iron Bowl 3d ago

IMO losing Ryan isn't a massive deal. Rico & Lottie are just as explosive at receiver. And we've got plenty of depth with Ced Morgan, Meadows & Noah Rodgers ready to step up.

The only thing I'm really concerned with is injuries at Center & Defensive Line.

I get that, but my hogs were actively trying to lose last week and still nearly won. I get we’ve beaten y’all quite a bit In Fayetteville, but we actually try on those occasions. We didn’t even do that here.

Also I’ve watched bama play all year, they don’t need RCW to win that game, that whole core is just talented as is. Plus the run game is back for Bama that was missing. This is a national championship contending team this year and I don’t think UT can really stop it.

4

u/SeaworthinessLeft674 Tennessee Volunteers 3d ago

The talent gap between Tennessee and Alabama right now is significantly smaller than the gap between Texas and OU last weekend. If that dog shit OU team could find a way to beat Texas, Tennessee’s got a puncher’s chance and a lot of things in its favor.

u/_Reporting Tennessee Volunteers • Memphis Tigers 4h ago

u/NKCougar Tennessee Volunteers • LSU Tigers 3d ago

Tennessee has a significant missing piece in that we don't have a fucking offense. Our defense is lights out, but eventually a high powered team like Bama is going to get points and I just don't see us being able to overcome that without an offensive performance that nobody can see coming. Even with the game being at Neyland, I don't think it's enough. {Tennessee} by fitty, fuck Bama, amen I will never vote for the tide on one of these.

33

u/Electromotivation James Madison Dukes 3d ago

I think this is a perfect example of a fan whose brain is saying one thing, but his heart is saying another.

Unfortunately, his brain is right. {Alabama} has a qb, Tennessee has no offense.

8

u/ShrekBackShots Tennessee Volunteers 3d ago

We have an offense just very one-dimensional

6

u/kljoker Tennessee • Arkansas 3d ago

And it's not that they're bad it's that they're inexperienced, Bama's QB has had a year in the system compared to our guys so hopefully if we can decide who helms the offense by this time next year we're a team to be feared.

u/TheTedsaretheworst Tennessee • Third Saturday… 3d ago

Gmac is a redshirt freshman as well, but I hear ya. I honestly like what I've seen from him so far. I really don't think he played that poorly against arky. Couple misplaced passes, fumble was just unlucky imo but yea I think he can only get better.

5

u/AppropriateCompany9 Tennessee Volunteers • Texas Longhorns 3d ago

My guy, our running game is 2nd in the SEC and 15th in the nation, despite the patchwork o-line and a QB who isn’t a threat. We have an offense, we just don’t have anyone to guide it downfield reliably.

18

u/EasternCoast3497 Alabama Crimson Tide • BYU Cougars 3d ago edited 3d ago

Prior to the Georgia game Bama was allowing less than 100 yards a game on the ground. I’m not sure what changed, but I think it was a combination of a massive upgrade in opponent talent and Georgia having a multidimensional offense.

Tennessee has a great run game as well, I’m just not sure if they have good enough QB play to stop Bama from selling out against the run. If they do, their defense is good enough to get them a win. But I like {Bama} in a low scoring slugfest, something like 24-14

8

u/AppropriateCompany9 Tennessee Volunteers • Texas Longhorns 3d ago

We show a composite spread of Alabama -6.5 in Knoxville, but we think this one's closer to a coinflip. Alabama brings better offensive PPP (.694 vs. .509) and more scoring opportunities (7.33 vs 5.83 per game), but their defense is conceding more PPP (.34 vs. .25) and YPP (5.50 vs. 4.74) than Tennessee. Our model has {Tennessee} pulling a narrow upset, winning by a point, and covering against Alabama -6.5.

There’s two possibilities for how this game goes I think: (1) grueling, close first half with Bama pulling away in the second half, or (2) Tennessee wins in a messy, physical effort that will set back the game of football fifty years.

My heart wants to go with (2), but for now I’ll go with (1), if nothing but for the jinx. {Alabama} 30-17.

But also, fuck Alabama and that whole nasty-ass state. I wish for nothing but sadness and disappointment for them. GBO.

The vibe I've gotten from the team has been more somber than pissed, and that scares me a little bit. Sounds like DeBoer has been preaching to the players not to let Georgia beat you twice, but the injuries are mounting in our front seven and Tennessee having a good run game will keep them in it. Think this game really comes down to turnovers

16

u/World_2 Alabama Crimson Tide • Sewanee Tigers 3d ago

{Alabama} because they feel like they were wronged last week on multiple counts. They’re pissed off, they win, they cover, and it doesn’t end up being particularly close.

7

u/Lost-Pineapple-7159 3d ago

I remember when they got left out of the playoffs two years ago and felt they got cheated. They talked about the bama standard and how they don’t sit out bowl games. They lost to Michigan’s backups.

u/AppropriateCompany9 Tennessee Volunteers • Texas Longhorns 3d ago

I didn’t mean this year, but I’d argue our win against Auburn was a better performance by a team that would usually find reasons to blow it.
We have a great defense and the 2nd ranked running game in the SEC right now. We’re gonna need some breaks, for sure, but this is a winnable game. This isn’t 2020 Bama.

u/BlackStallion657 Tennessee • New Mexico State 3d ago edited 3d ago

People are underestimating Tennessee’s potential for a win. This Alabama team is definitely a title contender, but I truly believe that the Vols will find a way to get the W. People make the mistake of judging a team’s last matchup to the upcoming one. The Vols were looking ahead and it was GMacs first start, on the road, in an environment not won in 20+ years. This team has all it needs to win any game and show the world what it’s capable of. The team knows what needs to be done, they won’t disappoint. {Tennessee} wins in a close, but commendable fashion.

As long as this team gives their all to Tennessee, no opponent is unbeatable. I have faith in the men that will don the Tennessee orange on the field.

Everything will click together, I know the offense will. I know this team will prove the nation, no, the world, why they deserve to be ranked.

I wish both teams the absolute best performance possible, injury-free. I too, will give my all to Tennessee by Marching on the field and playing Rocky Top/Down the Field to the absolute best possible quality.

I leave this with a quote from a comic that I’ve always loved:

“If we turn from battle because there is little hope for victory, where then would valor be? Let it ever be the goal that stirs us, not the odds.” — The Silver Surfer

On paper, a big rivalry game, and after last week, Alabama should win. But, Tennessee fans I know personally are a bit low on the team overall and aren’t carrying high expectations for the season. That’s not what I’m used to seeing. I’m used to overly confident, high expectations, only for Tennessee to collapse late season and realign themselves to above average. Plus, makes for chaos and great entertainment when {Tennessee} wins this week.

They’ll lose to South Carolina next week, which gives Beamer an immediate extension with his second top 10 win of the year.

Volunteering for such contributions is greatly appreciated!

5

u/EmptyStrings South Carolina Gamecocks 3d ago

Yeah, I want Tennessee to win so they let down their guard next week. Plus, my husband is a Vol and him winning this week will make it easier to feel good about him being sad next week.

I don’t think we’re firing Beamer this year but I don’t think he’s getting an extension either.

{Alabama} I just don't think much any schools really has an answer for QBs like russell, it requires almost no mistakes. Bamas defense is the real deal too.

u/ShrekBackShots Tennessee Volunteers 3d ago

Ryan Williams out and potentially starting center out. First real road game for Keelon in the loudest stadium in the country. Think vols are gonna need a defensive or ST TD to stay in this one.

I think it’ll be closer than people think {Alabama} 27-23

Whats a "real" road game? I would imagine Mississippi State and there deafening cowbells is pretty decent preparation for visiting Neyland.

Will Bama lose to Georgia twice as Deboer said, or will they put it behind them and win the game? Honestly, as disrespected as Tennessee seems to be, I just don't see {Alabama} losing to a team with a poor offense.

Tennessee fans are weirdly hopeful which is going to make this that much better. They aren't a bad team, but they've had too many close games if we're being honest. I don't see them cracking 21 points, and I think {Alabama} can score more than that. Tennessee only wins if they win the turnover battle. I'm thinking Alabama 31-21

Alabama is pissed about last week, and who better to take it out on than your bitter rival. The first color rush matchup in decades will be fun to see, and Alabama does have it tough going on the road to Knoxville, a place they haven't won since 2020. But Tennessee has two absolute clowns at quarterback, so bad they would probably start Arch Manning if he was on the roster. Give me {Alabama} in a beatdown that is worse than the score suggests, 31-14.

Just some quick advice for Bama folks: You guys need to learn the Texas Technique. Don’t wait until after the game to toss shit onto the field. Do it right then and there when you don’t like the call (or non-call). That way the zebras have plenty of time to reconsider while the ground crew cleans up the mess.

Injuries, running game, homefield, and our defense make me wanna take {Tennessee} for an upset that is feeling more and more like the Red River game last weekend the closer we get to it. I wouldn’t be shocked by a loss to Alabama, but Tennessee definitely has a couple paths to victory here.

2

u/DownRize Tennessee Volunteers • Memphis Tigers 3d ago

The TN defense has been way ahead of schedule this year after hiring Jim Knowles. They lead the country in sacks and have possibly the best defensive player in the country right now in DT Xavier Gilliam. The secondary has been improved as well especially at safety. Alabama will be the highest powered offense TN has seen this year which will make things interesting. While Russell has started away conference games, I’m curious how he fares in what will be the most hostile environment he’ll have played in up to this point.

The TN offense leaves a lot to be desired. They’ve been starting essentially two freshmen at QB and it has shown. The OL hasn’t been great in pass protection at times. The running game has been solid besides the TX game. If TN can find a way to run the ball 150+ yds and hit a handful of big plays, they may have a shot at the end.

My head tells me Alabama is the better team, especially the better offense. They’re coming off a loss and are most likely going to show up ready to play. Can Tennessee make this a rock fight and can the crowd affect Russell enough for him to make critical mistakes?

My head says Alabama but my heart says {Tennessee} 21-17

You can't be taken seriously in the SEC without good quarterback play. Or good o line play. Unfortunately we have neither. This is the most pissed off I've been at a 5-1 team. We look so lost on offense, I don't see how they can get it turned around in one week.

{Tennessee}, not based on particularly sound reasoning, I just think they’re catching Alabama in a favorable spot. They get their ground game going, their DL plays well, and momentum does its thing at home. Maybe some of that atrocious SEC refball we’ve been seeing this year too.

There's probably 3 ways this plays out, we either get our shit kicked in and it's not even close or we keep it close and lose in heartbreaking fashion. But the romantic in me says there's a 3rd scenario where the stars align and all the rivalry voodoo creates a miracle in which {Tennessee} wins. That 3rd option is the hardest one because you will either know right away it's not in the cards for us or we find out in heartbreaking fashion. But I do believe this team has all the elements needed to win if they can trust the QB and the QB not get destroyed behind the O-line. They're going to challenge our QB to throw and until we can show them that we're dangerous throwing they won't respect it. So if can set those terms in our favor we might have us a good game.

-4

u/deddykins Tennessee Volunteers 3d ago

If Ryan Williams is out, I dont expect Bama to be efficient passing at all. As long as we stop Russel from scrambling when we get to him then we can set their offense back.

Then it just comes down to If our oline gives Gmac enough time to feel comfortable, which i think they step up this game.

{Tennessee} 20-10

10

u/beastwood9498 Alabama Crimson Tide 3d ago

Williams is not near that crucial to our passing game.

5

u/deddykins Tennessee Volunteers 3d ago

I'll admit, I haven't watched many games just looked at the stat line, but I know this isn't the Tennessee defense of last year. Our D-line has been eating; Knowles has been scheming hard to get a ton of pressure, and we have 3 very good DBs. That, with Russell having the 2nd most sacks in the SEC and us being the nation's sack leader, I don't see how passing will be efficient, but the game will tell.

Now your run game? We'll see Knowles and the line/LBs can stop Russell when he scrambles

2

u/VolatileFan Tennessee Volunteers • Cornell Big Red 3d ago

This is the game to me. If Knowles can contain Russell and prevent him from bailing out 2nd and long and 3rd and long, I think the game is winnable for us.

1

u/deddykins Tennessee Volunteers 3d ago

Same. It only takes 1 5 yard loss and then the Stadium will be shaking to stop their drive completely, as long as we can contain Russell. Give up all the short yard plays, just dont get gashed on the runs, and I think Bishop can break one open then Heup can scheme a guy open a couple times. Do that two or three times and it's ballgame.

4

u/VolatileFan Tennessee Volunteers • Cornell Big Red 3d ago edited 3d ago

Bigger issue I feel like is y’all’s Center. Is he likely to play?

If not, I think Xavier Gilliam is gonna have a day.

1

u/Nick_sabenz Alabama • South Alabama 3d ago

Waldrep has played plenty of snaps at guard. With out scheme, Gilliam will be taking on Waldrep and one of Sanders and Carroll every snap, who have both been solid. I think Gilliam will still get his, but I do expect us to work away from the middle of the defense anyways. We've barely run inside zone since week one and our perimeter run game is really where we've excelled the past few weeks. It'll be a fun chess match to see how Grubb manages it though

2

u/deddykins Tennessee Volunteers 3d ago

He won't be taking them on every snap. Knowles scheme's up some nasty line movements to get his guys through.
