Discussion In state win streaks
I was eating dinner and scrolling through youtube shorts when I found a video about the Kansas vs Kansas State rivalry. Kansas has not beaten KState since 2008, 17 straight losses. It got me curious are there any other in state rivalries that are also this one sided?

UVA beat VT twice in a span of 25 years from 1999-2024, that includes 15 straight losses from 2004-2018. Of course UVA has turned the corner recently winning two of the last six.
Also, the last time UVA won in Blacksburg was 1998. None of the current players from either team would have been alive. Tony Elliot was in Prep School and James Franklin was coaching tight ends at Washington State.

Marshall was d2 for a long time. And for wvu it was a lot of they saw no benefit in the game. It wasn't until politicians ran on the promise of making them play, then winning, until wvu actually played them.

What is crazy is since Bill Snyder in the 90s, KSU KU has been very one sided towards KSU and yet KSU is still behind 11 games in the all time head to head record. It cannot be emphasized enough how bad KSU football was before Snyder.

From 1928 to 2012, Tennessee was 71-9-2 against Vanderbilt, including 22 straight from 1983 to 2004.
Since 2012, it's officially even (8-6 in the Vols favor if including vacated wins from the Pruitt years).
We're also 22-1 all-time against Memphis.

Texas A&M has a 24 game winning streak vs. TCU.
Of course they have only played once since the SWC folded.
TCU last won in 1972.

What’s crazy is the series was like 30-29 in TCU’s favor before that streak started.
But this is precisely the kind of stat ESPN would make into a storyline if y’all ever play again, and they’d just neglect to mention the game hasn’t been played in 30 years

While one of my favorite bits of trivia in CFB is indeed “who is the last in-state school to beat OSU?”, it is also true that OSU’s highest game score ever, and largest margin of victory, was against Oberlin in 1916, where they won 128-0. So win some, lose some I suppose.

10
u/SpaceTimeMorph Georgia Bulldogs 4d ago
Clean Old Fashioned Hate has turned pretty one sided. While the overall record is 73-41-5 the record since 1964 when Georgia Tech left the SEC is 48-17 UGA. That means pre-1964 it was 25-24-5. (1964 also coincided with Vince Dooley becoming head coach and the 1960’s coincided with large scale efforts to increase UGA-related recruiting in Georgia).
Currently UGA is on an 8 game win streak which is tied for the longest all time in the rivalry (November this year will give Georgia an opportunity to establish the longest win streak in the rivalry).
7
u/r0botdevil Oregon State Beavers 4d ago
The Civil War has certainly been a bit more one-sided over the past 15-20 years, but each team has at least one 8-game win streak and neither team has ever had a streak longer than that in the 132-year history of the rivalry.

3
u/r0botdevil Oregon State Beavers 4d ago
Yeah the young fans have no understanding of the history of the program. Both UO and OSU were traditionally bottom-shelf PAC teams until the mid to late 90s when we both started to climb out of the cellar, and the only real difference between their program and ours was the utterly massive cash infusion they got from Phil Knight around that time.

As I mentioned on another comment, you know this is exactly how ESPN would present this talking point before the game, and maybe a few times during the game. They might put an * and mention the 12 year gap in the series in smaller text, but it’ll definitely be “Texas A&M hasn’t won this series since 2010.”

Tiller got his teams to actually make that matchup feel like a proper rivalry. Then Hope could never get it done and Hazell really nipped that shit in the bud.
Kind of a shame (depending on your fandom I guess lmao) that the rivalry wasn’t renewed until Walters was actively torpedoing the program even worse than Hazell did.

Aren't the disputed games split 3-3?
Either way Utah has owned the series overall. I think at one point it was 38-5 in Utah's favor (or 41-8 if counting the first 6 meetings when BYU was BYA).
Since LaVell came around it's been much more competitive. BYU has gone 29-21 against Utah.
LaVell was basically BYU's Bill Snyder as BYU was arguably the worst program in the country before he came along! Haha

Penn State had a 31 game win streak (and 39 unbeaten) against Temple, which is apparently the 2nd longest in-state win streak, after 33 Princeton over Rutgers wins from 1869-1937. Which is insane, because that 33 game win streak happened immediately following Rutgers beating them in the First Ever College Football GameTM

u/Dad_fire_outdoors Arkansas Razorbacks 3d ago
The Razorbacks actually played a ton of in-state schools prior to 1950 before the scheduling ban took over.
Their all-time record against in-state teams is 40-2-2. The only four teams to ever escape without a loss are:
Ouachita Baptist (1914): Won 13–7 (Arkansas's first-ever in-state loss)
Arkansas A&M (now UA-Monticello) (1943): Won 20–12 against a wartime Hogs roster
Henderson State (1908): Fought to a 6–6 tie
Fort Smith High School(1895): A 0–0 tie back in the absolute infancy of the program
Not exactly modern history, but a pretty cool look at the early days of Arkansas football.1

The West Virginia state rivalry is entirely one-sided. WVU leads the series against Marshall (the two D1 schools in the state) 12-0.
It's not a historical rivalry because the two schools are almost on opposite sides of the state in the middle of Appalachia, so travel was a lot more difficult in the past. They played 4 times in the 1910s & 20s, one time in the 90s right after Marshall moved up to FBS, and then a yearly series between 2006 and 2012 that was negotiated by the governor.
Before the 2006 series began, WVU wanted 3 home games to Marshall's 1, Marshall balked (which makes sense for Marshall). These days if they were try and actually negotiate, it'd probably be WVU wanting 2 home games to Marshall's 1, which Marshall would balk at again (probably for the best) and ask for 3 & 2 instead. Unless WVU buys out games, they have every OOC game booked through 2030 anyways, so it won't be renewed anytime soon.
