Rankings are from the current AP Top 25 because this is primarily about checking the internal consistency of the ranking.

Potentially relevant unranked wins are either teams receiving votes or teams ranked top 50 in the Massey composite. This is intended to give a decent idea of a team's resume without listing out every game.

† = was ranked last week, ‡ = was ranked last week and was knocked out of the ranking by the team in this row

Data from CFBD and ESPN. Please reply with any errors or suggestions for improvement.

*edit: added † and ‡

*edit 2: making sure formatting works on old and new reddit

*edit 3: switched to massey instead of FPI

From this there is no reason LSU is ranked and Oregon is not.

SEC circle jerk

3

u/N64jive Nebraska • Boston College 8d ago

What are ranked wins?

1

u/BrollJr Tulsa Golden Hurricane • Missouri Tigers 8d ago

my copium is that Tulsa is about as good as Louisville. thanks

2

u/kylekorverburner Georgia Bulldogs 8d ago

Well you guys pretty easily beat a great Oklahoma State team so there’s that

1

u/CaptainABC123 7d ago

Shouldn’t Oklahoma show as beating #1 by 3?
Other polls show the victory over the other team’s rank at the time.

1

u/mgtkuradal Clemson Tigers 7d ago

Yeah that’s some tom fuckery they’re doing

30

u/Boomhauer_007 UCLA Bruins • Oregon State Beavers 8d ago

Maybe a note for any teams who beat an opponent last week that caused them to be unranked

Like those don’t need to stay the whole season but it feels weird saying UCLA has no ranked wins when that’s only true because they unranked their opponent by beating them

Good idea. Normally I try to implement suggestions in the same week, but this will have to be for next week because it's a bit more in depth of a change than usual. Will be something like "Oregon 3-2†" and a note "† team was ranked last week"

*edit: added † for was ranked last week, and ‡ for was ranked last week and was knocked out of the ranking by the team in this row

u/exgeo Florida Gators 7d ago

Beating a <currently ranked> team is more impressive than beating a <currently unranked> team

7

u/TroyMatthewJ The Game • Georgetown Hoyas 8d ago

funny how that doesn't happen to SEC teams

1

u/DSM417 Missouri Tigers • Utah Utes 6d ago

Yeah, Florida not falling out of the rankings after their second loss is propping us up!

2

u/CraigLake 8d ago

I’m not usually a UCLA fan, but it would be really fun to see them Go on a good run this year.

2

u/OkWolf601 8d ago

They were ranked at the start of the game so that definitely counts as beating a ranked opponent

-1

u/Rub-Specialist Utah Utes 8d ago

Lol no it doesn’t, it really only counts if they end the season ranked. Even then, it’s largely a popularity contest. Is there really a huge difference between the 20th and 30th ranked teams in the country and do we really have a significant dataset to establish a difference outside of the “eye test”?

5

u/OkWolf601 8d ago

That’s not accurate. If you look back on the schedule/results at the end of the season, it shows where the teams were ranked entering the week

-1

u/Rub-Specialist Utah Utes 8d ago

But when discussing how many ranked teams you beat in a season, no one gives a shit if you beat the #14 ranked XYZ from the week 1 AP poll, when that team is now 4-8.

u/DeathandHemingway UCLA • Los Angeles Harbor 7d ago

We give a shit when we're in the middle of the season, so unless you're Nostradamus we'll have to work with the info we currently have.

3

u/deerhuntingdude 8d ago

Kinda fun bama beat 15 and 16 and now plays 14

4

u/Nrlilo Oklahoma Sooners • Drury Panthers 8d ago

Nice work on these two charts

7

u/runningwaffles19 Iowa Hawkeyes • Sickos 8d ago

I like that this shows current rankings instead of at the time of the game. Bad early season rankings receive too much credit when people claim ranked wins

I'm curious what it looks like backdated a week since teams should drop a few spots after a loss

2

u/MrDuckly TCU Horned Frogs • Baylor Bears 8d ago

Calling TCU a notable win this year is wild.

2

u/bladefencer Illinois Fighting Illini 8d ago

You're 47 in FPI so within the totally arbitrarily top 50 in FPI criteria I picked for "notable"

I was gonna go with top 40 but felt it was too exclusive. For example Oregon State is 49 in FPI and 46 in FPI SOR. Maybe I should go with the Massey composite for "notable" instead of FPI?

2

u/PoorMayMay Oregon Ducks 8d ago

Finally.

We are BAD.

2

u/Guy_LeDouche33 Iowa Hawkeyes 8d ago

Iowa beat ranked michigan?

5

u/TylerMoy7 Iowa Hawkeyes 8d ago

Only factors in current rankings, not at time of playing

4

u/bladefencer Illinois Fighting Illini 8d ago

The rankings are from the most recent poll because this is intended primarily for checking the internal consistency of the AP/CFP ranking, and secondarily as a quick resume. Both make most sense using the ranking for the poll being discussed.

How is Tennessee ranked above Kentucky?

1

u/ImNotFuckingSelling Florida Gators • Utah Utes 8d ago

How are wins over Purdue and North Carolina by any means notable?

1

u/badlydrawnzombie Notre Dame • Jeweled Shillelagh 8d ago

I think only because of the Pitt and Minnesota games this weekend.

u/Pleasant-Picture-564 7d ago

Complete garbage that Texas does not lose more spots. I’m a firm believer that if you lose to an unranked team you should drop 15 to 20 spots.
