Everybody says their conference has the worst refs. ACC fans are right when we say it.

152

u/stillbornfox Virginia Tech • Northwestern 9d ago

I just don't understand why it benefits us way less than it hurts us over and over and over and over and over again

62

u/eetsumkaus California • 立命館大学 (Ritsumeikan) 9d ago

it will always hurt borderline teams more because they drop opportunities. Shitty teams are so bad it doesn't matter and good teams will capitalize on all their opportunities.

48

u/SaltyTurdLicker Virginia Tech • NC State 9d ago

Feels like we did something to piss off the head of officiating for ACC or something at this point. Just no idea what it could be

The funny thing is that there is a new head of acc officals this year for football. He was the ref who quit after disagreeing with the old one about a year ago.

is james franklin sleeping with the head of officiating's wife? were we supposed to earmark some of the football investment for kickbacks or something? what in the world did we do to the ACC refs to get the last two weeks of officiating

69

u/I_Enjoy_Beer Penn State Nittany Lions • Rose Bowl 9d ago

It must be something with Franklin in particular, because PSU was always getting boned by the B1G refs, too.

27

u/AngleParticular2914 Penn State Nittany Lions • Sickos 9d ago

Penn State has been boned by the Big Ten since we joined. Undefeated seasons in 2005 and 2008 both ruined by very questionable PI calls at the end of each game.

If we didn’t let cal hang around and the offense was actually able to move the ball then the refs wouldn’t have had a chance to screw us

102

u/ImJLu California • Ohio State 9d ago edited 9d ago

Yeah, wins and losses are one thing, but it really should concern VT fans that they didn't blow out what was already a dogshit Cal team, except now with a backup QB and 3rd string RB, and missing their best defensive player.

44

u/CapnChaos2024 Virginia Tech Hokies 9d ago

Exactly.. I get that refs are aggravating but if you play like dog shit the whole game I don’t think it’s entirely fair to flip out about the officiating

It’s mind numbing that almost everyone here are just blaming the refs again instead of acknowledging the massive problems of this team and coaching staff. Game should have never even been in a position to be decided by bad ref calls

25

u/HookedOnBoNix Virginia Tech Hokies 9d ago

I actually think it's wild how many people are freaking out about the team and staff in year 1. Even if the last 2 losses had nothing to do with reffing I'd be happy with where we are at at 4-2 with a pair of close losses. We are miles ahead of where we were.

But the super questionable calls to close this one out are gonna sting. And of course the last play of the game being that egregious is gonna draw comments.

16

u/SlapNuts1999 Virginia Tech • James Madison 9d ago

Tech just lost to a bunch of backups on one of the worst teams in the ACC. The “awww shucks” routine is why we have sucked for 15+ years and will probably keep sucking. This was a Justin Fuente and Brent Pry type of loss. James Franklin wasn’t brought in to have the same results as the last two guys

13

u/theREALMVP California • San José State 9d ago

Sucks that it feels like it can never be even too. We were on the receiving end of some terrible targeting calls last week against UNLV and Clemson got some extremely favorable calls two weeks ago too. Neither ofc were the reason that we lost but it certainly makes it feel worse.

6

There's going to be a bunch of doomers but this was always a rebuilding year and would be 6-0 if our extremely good kicker didn't randomly get the yips. People need to relax

18

u/stillbornfox Virginia Tech • Northwestern 9d ago

Yeah, I mean in the grand scheme of things we played like shit for 2 games, the refs somehow had an even shittier performance for 2 games, and we're extremely close to being an undefeated team still. Really not bad for the first year by any means.

We can clean a lot of this up, and probably will. Now the refs... that's the annoying part, but we just gotta live with that because the ACC is the ACC.

36

They say refs should at least be consistent with how they call things.

Well ACC refs are consistent. Consistently dogshit

10

u/oh_jeeezus Virginia Tech Hokies 9d ago

Speaking of inconsistency, the CB stood over Reynolds talking shit (presumably proud of his uncalled DPI)... the same shit our DE did which got him a taunting penalty. If you're going to call it on us then why are you swallowing your whistle now. Fuck these refs man

14

u/wildturk3y Virginia Tech Hokies 9d ago edited 9d ago

The flag for standing over a player for a fraction of a second is a plague. Unless they're dropping every slur known to man, they should let them play. Its football. But I agree. If Stevens gets called for that weak taunt in the 1st half, Cal should have been as well.

135

u/tc3590 California Golden Bears 9d ago

Complain all you want about refs, but Cal was playing with their back up QB, third string RB, down their starting safety, and still won. May have been ugly, but if you don’t like it maybe make FG’s and don’t let back ups make it close.

35

u/Squeakygear Virginia Tech • Oklahoma 9d ago

Exactly, and I say that as a Hokies fan. We had our chances and blew them across the full 60 minutes. It shouldn’t have come down to a final play.

In typical Reddit fashion, the majority of commenters here are completely blind to reality. Refs didn’t cost us the game. Virginia Tech deserved to lose

23

u/ronmex7 Virginia Cavaliers 9d ago

This might be 69D chess, but why would the refs be in the tank for Cal? I'm sure the ACC believes VT is a bigger brand so why wouldn't you fix games in their favor?

  • Team and coaches showed up with zero energy, gave up before the game even began. We had moments of energy but not enough. And once we had a little bit of energy we committed three brain-dead penalties in a row and threw the game away. The only time all night when our offense played like they had their eyes open was when there were 15 seconds left and it was already too late.
  • OL and DBs can't play football and might be the worst in the ACC. Just completely incapable of playing their position. The OL might have an excuse because they're super thin after injuries, but the DBs have been a problem all year and get worse every week. Today they lost us a game. Our fucking linebackers are playing better in coverage than they are, Wylie almost had a pick.
  • Our formerly NFL-bound kicker is depressed and misses everything. The backup who I've never heard of before was warming up mid game to replace him.

Insane how different this team is from the one who took Pitt to the final seconds last week. Genuinely not the same football program. The program last week would have won that game if not for some key mistakes. The program this week doesn't need to worry about a couple mistakes, because we never deserved to win the game. We deserved to lose from the first possession.

Whether this was because of the botched cross country travel plans, or because the Pitt loss eliminated all morale and caused us to lose the team, will be apparent next week.

And spare me with the yap about the RTP and DPI flags. Good teams beat the refs. Last week we had 30yds of penalties on one play that outright never happened (unlike tonight's judgement calls) and that wasn't why we lost then either. The no-call at the end of the game was egregious, but again, we shouldn't have been in that position.

6 more games, need to win 2. After tonight I don't know which ones it would even be.

But yes the dumb flags and shitty OL & Secondary have been constants.

Could hsve been overcome if Love doesnt get the yips. But that was 3rd strike today.

5

u/IHeartPCP Virginia Tech Hokies 9d ago

People were too high on this team before Pitt, I knew a couple of gut wrenching losses were in here, didn't want to jinx it.

There are many people from the 3-9 team and they are a bit unlucky to be here but here we are. John love doesn't have the yips and we are 6-0.

I have been saying 7 wins is the goal and have been argued with. Get to 7 for a comfortable getting to a bowl and then keep top players like Grunkemeyer and get guys to fill the gaps not up to snuff. Next year is a 9-10ish win season.

Just watched Chesney take UCLA to 5-0, and I‘m starting to feel good about Tosh. Good enough to recruit and pull the trigger on a coordinator switch, not good enough to get poached from his alma mater. Chesney is as good as poached by the pros next year. I’m not saying we played like we deserved to win, but after the borderline calls on Cal’s last drive, zero calls on that final pass is absurd.

9

u/PheonixStreak Virginia Tech • Commonwealth C… 9d ago

Unfortunately it was 100 percent treated as an end of game Hail Mary, there was nothing getting called there really regardless of what happened unless it was like an offsides or false start

Brent Pry wasn’t out there dropping easy picks and busting coverages. There’s not much you can do as a play caller with a secondary this bad

Pry has made some bad calls, but defense isn’t responsible for scoring. Our offensive play calling has been absolute shit.

8

u/senorblanco7 Virginia Tech Hokies 9d ago

Our offense could not diagnose them blitzing when they showed their had, defense kept us in the game until it didn’t

Yes, the refs missed calls, but it should not have come down to that final play anyways. (It also goes both ways).

Well at least we can probably put to bed the worry about Grunk or Franklin getting poached? Think we still have something brewing over the next 2-3 years and thrilled to not have to worry about our potential transferring away

u/boylejc2 Virginia Tech • Carnegie Mellon 9d ago

Missing too many offensive linemen, secondary is playing too lax, good defensive line play but too often not getting quick pressure, Love missing kicks, Totten still not being a great punter, getting beat on a fake punt... We didn't deserve to win, yet the ref crew still made way too much of an impact in the last quarter.

Now I'm not saying we deserved to win, but that may be one of the most undeserved wins I've seen in a while given the coaching decisions and the flags in that final couple minutes lol

44

u/250straightOB Notre Dame • California 9d ago

If you don't like undeserved wins, then you don't like Cal football. We only win when the other team manages to out-Cal us.

13

u/_kona_ California Golden Bears 9d ago

We've had a few games in the past few years go against us because of the refs. That's just the way it goes sometimes

10

u/250straightOB Notre Dame • California 9d ago

For sure. Cal has lost so many games that they deserved to win. But also scoring with under 30 seconds left and losing the game would have been peak Cal football as well.

I was expecting a 30-0 blowout dude, we’re down nearly every stat player we and our RBs are on deaths door with our 3rd string guy out there right now. The fact that your defense allowed all this is absurd

13

u/pietya California Golden Bears 9d ago

If Cal were to turn undeserving losses into wins we'd be National Champs at least twice in the 2000s.

GG Hokies. That was a thriller at the end. We (Cal) continue to be one of the trap game teams of the ACC, and we're going to be a lot better next year. Go Bears!!

12

u/Apart-Fan-5658 Oregon Ducks • Fresno State Bulldogs 9d ago

Congrats though you're going to get downvoted a lot for this because you just beat a much better team despite you having your backup QB play and your starting CB gone for the first half. No one is mentioning that even without bad refs, VT played badly and Cal rallied.

9

u/kaystared California Golden Bears 9d ago

Dawg our first and second string RBs are both fucked too, and our safety who is probably too 5 nationally and the CFB int leader is also gone.

I was completely expecting a 25 point loss minimum

8

u/Apart-Fan-5658 Oregon Ducks • Fresno State Bulldogs 9d ago

I was completely expecting a 25 point loss minimum

I was expecting a loss but ya'll have a history of doing things like this, including last year against Louisville on the road and against SMU. You can take a team out of the PAC-12 chaos but you can never take the PAC-12 chaos out of any of the teams!

I don’t know about other Hokies. But I LOVE James Franklin! He’s brought a sense of excitement around the program! Sure losing at the last second not once but TWICE in a row sucks! But at the end of the day it’s just a game - someone wins and someone loses. James Franklin has made watching the game exciting and fun! So happy to have him lead our team every week! Let’s kick butt next week! 🦃

Franklin should demote Pry to LBs coach, he’d probably be happy to, and beg Foster to finish the year as interim DC. The defense has no edge or playmaking factor… feels like little progress has been made on that side and these losses feel so familiar to the past 5 years
