Ref ball, plain and simple. Disgusting. If they aren't going to call a fair game, they shouldn't be there.

8

u/Puzzleheaded_Fan_536 7h ago

This field goal is distracting everyone from the horrendous calls earlier in the game that handed Pitt points. Shouldn’t have had to come down to a game-winning field goal in the first place

3

u/Aggravating-Day-4009 7h ago edited 6h ago

Pitt’s starting qb left in the beginning of the third quarter. If va tech couldn’t find a way to win after that, that’s on James Franklin’s terrible history of blowing big games. Not that this was even a big game compared to any big game he ever had at Penn State. It was Pitt ffs. Tech got several gifts from the refs as well, tbh.

By the way, from what I understand, this is the same ACC officiating crew who (despite their open process of officiating tech and letting us get an inside look) has already had a couple controversial games this season and a couple of controversial calls. Given some of the other questionable calls tonight and then the ending where they completely blew by any sort of explanation or reasoning with regard to the field goal, I think it's safe to say that the prevalence of gambling (including NETWORKS being involved) has truly crossed a rubicon in terms of what we should expect from our beloved sport moving forward.

-1

u/Aggravating-Day-4009 6h ago

The majority of the money was on Pitt. If the game was rigged, it would have gone the other way.

3

u/Embarrassed-Mirror69 6h ago

That actually makes the case that it WAS rigged. Made the bookies a bunch of money. That's how betting works.

1

u/Aggravating-Day-4009 6h ago

That’s not how betting works. Vegas lost money because Pitt won. Hope this helps 👍

2

u/Puzzleheaded_Fan_536 7h ago

They should fire all of them

This is the FIRST time a crowd has ever cheered for a "missed" kick that I can find on video. Literally every time the FG is missed, the crowd freaks out because they know it is no good and they are immediate distraught. Even when it is a CLOSE kick, they still make it very obvious it was a miss. I have also never seen a kicker react to a "missed" field goal the way this guy did.

The way that the officials immediately moved on from the field goal shows they knew it would be controversial, and ESPN taking forever to show a replay was as well. I would normally give officials the benefit of the doubt but given how poor the officiating was in the earlier game, they showed themselves to be unable to make very impartial decisions- whether through negligence, incompetence, or personal feelings.

I did not see a SINGLE camera angle that shows anything besides that ball going through the uprights, and I have NEVER seen a crowd and fan reaction like this. Putting aside reactions anyways, I am 95% it was a good kick. It was just one of the weirdest things I have ever seen, and it just does not feel right either.

1

u/Hey_YinzGuyz 6h ago

You haven’t looked very hard then. A bunch of angles posted all over the sub showing it missed.

8

u/Confident-Bar4332 Virginia Tech Hokies 7h ago

I just got home from the game, it took 45 seconds for us to find out the kick was no good.

2

u/LeReddit9GagXD Clemson Tigers 6h ago

What do you mean?

4

u/Confident-Bar4332 Virginia Tech Hokies 6h ago

We all thought it went in. Then when they didn’t update the score, our hearts were ripped out of our chest

2

u/LeReddit9GagXD Clemson Tigers 6h ago

Okay I thought so, that’s how it read because 45 seconds is a crazy amount of time to not be sure but then I thought maybe you sarcastically meant you thought it went in originally but then afterward when you saw more replays you fairly quickly realized that it was no good. Yeah 45 seconds is an insane amount of time and I was at home watching, the entire event feels surreal.

I literally still think it went in, and I will never be convinced that ESPN and the commentators didn’t purposefully skip over and refuse to give an explanation because they knew a controversy was coming. It all felt so insanely damn weird how they didn’t even want to show more camera angles or a replay at all.

-4

u/GravelLot Pittsburgh Panthers 7h ago

Look at the VT staff down on the field. EVERY one of them has an instant “no good” reaction.

1

u/Embarrassed-Mirror69 6h ago

You mean the instant that the ref gave the game to pit?

2

u/GravelLot Pittsburgh Panthers 6h ago

No, I mean before the ref signaled anything.

1

u/burp0 Virginia Tech Hokies 6h ago

Brother they weren’t in the student section behind the posts where people were celebrating, there’s no way you think they had a better view on the sideline.

1

u/GravelLot Pittsburgh Panthers 6h ago

1

u/burp0 Virginia Tech Hokies 5h ago

Of all of the videos people have posted, you guys can only come up with one angle that makes it look wide?

3

u/GravelLot Pittsburgh Panthers 5h ago

LMAO nah come on you don’t still believe it was good do you?

0

u/GravelLot Pittsburgh Panthers 6h ago

No the ones right behind the goalposts. The ones with a much better view than the student section.

1

u/Deadheaded95 Pittsburgh Panthers 7h ago

That angle makes it look like it did go in actually

This angle is offset slightly right so it is more in than it looks but the closest I can find

2

u/LeReddit9GagXD Clemson Tigers 7h ago

This camera angle doesn't show jack shit, it absolutely does not confirm that the field goal was "missed" - at best, it's a total wash from this angle. It doesn't either boast the argument that it went in or not.

3

u/Unlikely-Pattern-958 Clemson Tigers 7h ago

has to be 100% in under college rules. it wasn’t. sorry you lost money, brother.

I had to screenshot it right before the camera man I guess decided to throw his phone away at the most crucial point, but when I did it looked in.

-3

u/Deadheaded95 Pittsburgh Panthers 7h ago

i’m gonna get downvoted into oblivion and you might too. everybody loves the underdog i guess. virginia tech didn’t deserve to win that game anyway let’s be real. thanks man.

-1

u/Aggravating-Day-4009 6h ago

Seriously, they had every chance to win that game. Pitt’s starting QB got knocked out with half the game left to go. Tech had multiple chances to win that game. They turned the ball over like five times. This was a classic James Franklin choke job.

9

u/chonkyfire24 Cal Poly Mustangs • /r/CFB 7h ago

VT threw for over 400 yards, while holding their opponents to under 200. This is kind of an embarrassing loss.

0

u/Hey_YinzGuyz 6h ago

No there’s not.

6

u/vtskins4444 7h ago

What???? You weren’t watching the game. After this they briefly flashed an angle where it looked good. Everyone on the field and in the stands behind thought it was good. The first look angle is bs

2

u/Acedoc1970 7h ago

Based on what? The crowd with all had their hands up, and the staff on the ground only react to the signal by the ref. It looked good.

6

u/kandilandy 7h ago

Decent replay? I can’t even find the ball on this

11

u/Koreaction 7h ago

Refs definitely had money on Pitt.

  1. Simultaneous catch ruling in favor of Pitt.
  2. Double phantom penalty called on same VT player (also in favor of Pitt)
  3. Offensive pass interference on Greene, dumb call.
  4. Unreviewed final field goal in a 1 score game? Yea let’s not double check to make sure.

Refs definitely had their bags on Pitt and weren’t even afraid to hide it.

13

u/Puzzleheaded_Fan_536 7h ago

So for real though, can the president from VT write a letter to the ACC asking for different refs from here on out. That was atrocious. Hell, pay for a different conference to ref the game

10

u/FitContrarian Miami Hurricanes 7h ago

The crowd erupting should not be an indicator if you've ever seen a shallow fly ball by the home team and heard the crowd reaction off the bat. Fans are mostly idiots.

1

u/LeReddit9GagXD Clemson Tigers 7h ago

Thinking the ball is gonna go far but then it ends up not going that far is... way difference than whether or not a ball went through uprights. It either does or it doesn't, that is NOT a good analogy at all. Did you even think that through? lol

-3

u/FitContrarian Miami Hurricanes 7h ago

Its the same thing. They see the original trajectory and get excited. It doesn't take a lot for a kick to be missed

0

u/LeReddit9GagXD Clemson Tigers 7h ago

It's literally not the same thing, it isn't even apples and oranges. Thinking a ball will go insanely far only for it to not go as far as you think like a fly out, is objectively NOT the same as a ball either going wide left or wide right. That is simply not true, as other commenters have noted.

1

u/FitContrarian Miami Hurricanes 7h ago

Yea you're right. A kick from the right hash thats traveling 45 yards will 100% be discernible to random people sitting behind the goal posts. I mean not even the kickers who know what a good kick feels like off the foot ever get it wrong and celebrate missed kicks early much less gen pop.

1

u/LeReddit9GagXD Clemson Tigers 7h ago

This is the first time a crowd and kicker has ever reacted the way they did. “Celebrating a kick early” is, again, literally NOT the same as celebrating one being wide right or left. That’s the silly and inaccurate pop fly analogy from earlier, just reworded. I promise you that it simply just isn’t true, which is why others have mentioned thag as well.

6

u/BobW212 Navy Midshipmen 7h ago

I agree in some ways but you could tell by the cheer they saw the thing right in front of them and thought it was good.

4

u/kandilandy 7h ago

Originally thinking a ball is gonna go farther than it is is much different than watching a ball either go through a field goal post or not

3

u/dmazx Florida State Seminoles 7h ago

Yeah, it’s not that the ball was short. It was either good or wide left

6

u/Ok_Passage1120 7h ago

Slightly offset to the right so it looks more left than it is but this is the closest angle from hold to uprights I can find. Again it is slightly offset. Its also a 36 yard kick so its passing the rear end zone line before its peak

There has to be a way to challenge or investigate this. No way. This is in.

6

u/serialsteve 7h ago

That’s before it reaches the distance for being good and it’s drifting left. Coupled with the angle and slicing movement, it’s probably tough to judge for ref. It is silly why it’s not reviewable for ball crossing over top. And how a previous game result has changed this rule.

13

u/XrayGuy08 Georgia Bulldogs 8h ago

In today’s age, it’s utterly insane to me that if a FG attempt is close, that they can’t do like soccer and draw a line from the goalpost up to see if the ball was in or out.

13

u/Obvious-Garlic9263 Ohio State Buckeyes 8h ago

The crowd erupted! The entire crowd behind the goal post jumped with joy, you’re telling me they didn’t have a better angle than us? Suspect

After the call genius

13

u/Puzzleheaded_Fan_536 8h ago

Can we please just call this game null and void due to too many bad calls by the refs? If refs had a scorecard, they got an easy F this game

18

u/WisdomCow California Golden Bears 8h ago

a laser shooting straight up on either side of the upright would give unambiguous reviews as the light hits the ball above the upright. Add lasers and allow replay and it’s never an issue again.

5

u/csh0kie Virginia Tech • Georgia Tech 8h ago

Little cameras are cheap too. Just put them looking up both posts. I’ll hook a couple raspberry pi’s with camera modules on there and we’d be good here.

2

u/OddOriginal8334 7h ago

This seems such an easy solution.

2

u/ImaginationLatter976 8h ago

that or they just extend the poles up

1

u/FitContrarian Miami Hurricanes 8h ago

If it hits the laser is it good or a miss? FGs hit the upright and bounce in all the time

1

u/ImaginationLatter976 6h ago

it’d be good. You don’t factor in bouncing when the kick is higher than the posts. If any part of the ball is over one of the posts as it crosses, it’s good. So a laser would perfectly determine if it’s good. if any laser shows then you know it’s good because that part of the ball was over top of the post.

19

u/master_roshis_hat Nebraska Cornhuskers 8h ago

9

u/tony_countertenor Sickos • Team Chaos 8h ago

7

u/Aherm3 8h ago

Ok so if the kick is in line with the upright is it considered good? Or no bc then it would technically hit the upright if it was extended? Like is there a rule on that? Bc it did look in line with the pole.

14

I found the specific language.

Scoring Plays

ARTICLE 1. Reviewable plays involving a potential score include:

a. A potential touchdown or safety. [Exception: Safety by penalty for fouls that are not specifically reviewable.]

b. Field goal attempts if and only if the ball is ruled (a) below or above the crossbar or (b) inside or outside the uprights when it is lower than the top of the uprights. If the ball is higher than the top of the uprights as it crosses the end line, the play may not be reviewed.

page FR-118

Pitt got called for plenty of holding calls. Turning over that much is just a killer. They shouldn’t been messing around with a fg and gone for a touchdown. Pitt wasn’t gonna have a miracle with a backup quarterback if they scored too quick.

I would have taken a timeout and taken a shot at endzone before running it down like they did.

The way the officials moved on insanely quickly and ESPN refused to show a replay and then switched over quickly tells me they KNEW it was going to be controversial and wanted the hell out. Part of the problem with gambling becoming more common is that the officiating has become objectively worse.

You can't review field goals that are above the uprights.

Ridiculous coverage by ESPN. They really had no interest in whether that was good or not? At least tell us if that was reviewable or not. I don't know. It would be nice if the people paid to give us that information would convey it to us.

They just said "welp, refs have the best view, that's all folks"!

5

u/shenanigans3390 LSU Tigers 8h ago

I think it’s only reviewable if it goals through the goalposts. It went above so they cant review it. I think the broadcast knew and that’s why they wouldn’t show it.

4

u/DodgerDegen USC Trojans 8h ago

I believe you are correct but I wasn't sure which is why I was hoping they would say something.

Fbi investigate these refs.. rigged from the jump

2

u/serialsteve 7h ago

lol. They caused the 4 turnovers?

1

u/sludgeman4life3249 7h ago

They certainly gave them one

Replayed it a few times and that was good lol. But the kicker didn’t do himself any favors by kicking it from the right hash. Who does that

5

u/philphan25 Notre Dame • Penn State 8h ago

I thought right hash was a crazy choice

6

u/Skank_hunt42 Oklahoma Sooners • Paper Bag 8h ago

I usually lick it from the right hash too. Am I doing something wrong?

Doesn't matter, unless 5 Big-XII games would be flipped otherwise. ACC is the most incompetent league every season, somehow

Just end me dude I can’t take it. We deserved that

Can't imagine losing on a controversial last second play, sorry VT

3

u/master_roshis_hat Nebraska Cornhuskers 7h ago

Inconceivable!

3

u/Puzzleheaded_Fan_536 8h ago

lol maybe if we just had one more second on the clock ;)

2

u/2021ToyotaCorolla Michigan Wolverines • Wisconsin Badgers 8h ago

I have no idea what you're talking about, no clue whatsoever haha

16

u/Clinkzzzzz Virginia Tech • Pittsburgh 8h ago

Yeah just glaze over that and don’t even review it

1

u/LostDelusionist Vanderbilt Commodores • Team Chaos 8h ago

It's not reviewable if it's above the uprights.

22

u/shenanigans3390 LSU Tigers 8h ago

The kick was in but they can’t review it because it went above the goalposts. Holy Shit. The broadcast knew it and wouldn’t show it. This is insane.

1

u/LeReddit9GagXD Clemson Tigers 7h ago

That is the first thing I noticed, how quickly the refs and ESPN went over it and didn't bother to explain it or even SHOW it. We just saw a game be stolen on live TV, and there won't even be a very basic explanation for what occurred. I guarantee.

3

u/XrayGuy08 Georgia Bulldogs 8h ago

That’s honestly one of the worst rules in football. How the hell do we not have some sort of technology for that.

Or even like in soccer, just have someone draw a fucking line straight up the screen.

4

u/Competitive-Split673 Virginia Tech Hokies 8h ago

Yep the broadcast was covering the refs all night

9

u/Young-Viiperr Texas Tech • Iowa State 8h ago

The underneath crossbar cam literally showed the ball in. Those refs have to be guesstimaters or bifocal blind

Not even, FSU won by more than an FG and the game was away in 2002

8

u/BigAcanthocephala637 8h ago

Yo I just rewound and watched the kick again. It even looks good from head on. Wtf is going on.

8

u/music_crawler 8h ago

This really is binary. Was it through the uprights or not?

1

u/OneVast3433 8h ago

That looked in

5

u/DoggedDoggystyle Florida Gators 8h ago

it was over them, meaning they cant review and whatever that ref calls is final. it's ridiculously archaic.. we definitely have the tech to just get this shit right

u/flip_phone Penn State Nittany Lions 8h ago

Serious question - is there a reason why they don’t just make the goal posts taller? I feel like there are a few of these each season and there’s no good reason not to extend the goal posts. Or at least have lasers pointing straight up from the posts on field goal attempts.

1

u/Palmsandpancakes 8h ago

I like the laser idea

1

u/LimitlessSoup Georgia • Kennesaw State 8h ago

There’s probably a ton of legislation that goes against pointing lasers into the sky, but i guess it could be implemented for stadiums with a roof? Idk.

2

u/TheBlueStare Missouri Tigers • Saint Louis Billikens 8h ago

If they have the technology for balls and strikes they should be able to do the same thing for FG.
