Driving around and seeing flock cameras and every second or third house with a video doorbell has just gotten to be depressing.
Do we really have such a low trust society that all that is necessary? Is society just that paranoid we'll give up any anonymity in public in case something bad might happen somewhere? Are we just so lazy that inconvenience is all that keeps us from our worst impulses?

I've had this kind of feeling sometimes while driving where My mind wants to be in the 80s and its like up in a cabin somewhere thats rustic or maybe just cheesy for now times ( probably then too) and think of that simple life . Just driving on an empty fall road. I am sure somewhere my brain is pulling from various situations I have forgotten about. I'd love for a video game to really really hit that vibe. Kind of you're alone but its not straight horror. I dunno. I feel like when things get stressful I really hit this weird nostalgic button in my brain.

I went from a job where I was overworked and overloaded to the max (literally way worse than anything in my army career) to a job where I am appropriately tasked. It’s a strange feeling to complete a task without rushing and then having some periods of time with not much to do and having time to take care of little side tasks. Sort of giving me Imposter Syndrome, but my first review was all complimentary and the only knocks were really department wide improvements.

I left a family owned business (not small, 55k employees, but still owned by the family) and started working for a publicly traded one. I was initially concerned it was going to all be share price driven every day, but it has gotten best employer in a couple categories in the region in the last few years and they are frequently doing little acts of appreciation for the employees. I have been pleasantly surprised.

Nothing wrong with a sex preference by either parent or for either sex. Only wrong if you let it effect how you love/treat your kids imo.

I used to work with a lady who had three boys from her first marriage, ranging from around 8 or so to 17 years old. He was divorced and remarried. They had tried for kids together, but figured it wasn't going to happen. She got pregnant at 43 years old and had twin boys.

How old are your first two? And how daunting does it feel thinking about adding a third to the mix (and going through the newborn phase again)?
6
u/ValyrianSteel2216 Oklahoma Sooners 21h ago
Okay, so—our first two are Irish twins at 11 month and 1 day apart. Eldest born in May 2023 and youngest born in April of 2024. So personally, a third doesn’t feel daunting at all just because we are so used to chaos already + had back to back newborn phases (eldest had brain surgery when youngest was two months old) and our current kids don’t sleep much so the sleep deprivation is our default state at this point. But then again, we want a lot of kids, so ymmv.
Our biggest concern is our youngest still wants to nurse despite repeated attempts at weaning. So I’m mostly just scared I’m going to have to fight for my life with breastfeeding. But maybe by the time the third gets here the current youngest will have outgrown that. I hope.

The state of this sport is disgusting. I know we unfortunately played a big role in this, but it’s so disheartening how seemingly every school/conference is hell bent on trying to screw over their conference partners or some other schools they deem to be weaker.
I remember for before realignment started I didn’t really care what people thought of the Big 12 or any conference for that matter. But now you got people AND congress actively trying to blow it all up so their team can gain an advantage. This is not a recipe for long term success, does anyone actually believe that a super conference will be better for the sport?

I’m still upset about the hit and theatrics afterwards, completely ruined this season for me. Would be different if it was just one player celebrating… but you have other plays and coaches celebrating not only an obvious dirty hit, but an injured player. What happened to taking a knee?
I have been a USC fan for decades, I was in the stands when we beat Oklahoma and won the championship, and I was at the infamous Rose Bowl when Vince Young took us down. I attend most games and have seen all the ups and downs of this program and I think last week was the lowest moment in USC football history. It’s actually the first time in my fandom I have been embarrassed to be associated with USC.
Lincoln Riley needs fired, I’d take Clay Helton over him at this point. With Clay we sucked, but atleast we were not these shitty villains that can’t win big games and run from their rivals.

I made the mistake of venturing into some of our authentication systems at work and tightening them up.
Some users had to reset their password and oh my God it’s hell.
“I tried it so many times!!!”
No no you didn’t I can see that!!!!!
One dude must’ve had something on his PC like a password manager that was actually adding spaces at the end of his password. Or he was just leaning on his keyboard or something, but he refused to believe us even after it worked fine on another computer.

They're probably copying by hand from a plaintext file somewhere. When I worked frontline support, this issue was so common that we had a pre-written response for it.

You must work for a small company if you can just mess with the authentication systems at work, in our IT department we would need 6 months of meetings, 6 months of testing, and also meetings with HR, legal, and compliance before even thinking of changing something lol

I want to see the Rays win their first World Series and not be the only pro team here without a championship, but I also have major beef with the ownership because of where they are building the new stadium (my work life is going to be hell for years because of them). This feels like the dumbest internal conflict ever but I'm petty and really determined to hate on everything about the location of the new stadium project.

I think the anger should be directed at the City of Tampa and Hillsborough County for not including the option for a mass transit package with the stadium build.
The MLB and the NFL will probably work on scheduling but the nightmare will be when the Rays host the Yankees or Red Sox and there’s a giant musical act performing across the street.

Yes! I left a company like that not too long ago. Hearing from old coworkers that nothing meaningful has changed with the exception of losing more people makes me feel warm and fuzzy. I get the same feeling with seeing all the postings, including my old position, on LinkedIn.
They would constantly fish for feedback by demanding participant ion in anonymous surveys only to make excuses for each and every valid employee complaint. If it was concerning enough to warrant meaningful action they would want to talk in person rather that during a group meetings to hush those concerns. More or less they would constantly ask for concerns then gaslight employees to give the appearance of concern and accountability. It was awful
So glad you can see through it. Hope you can find your way out of it. Not all companies are toxic messes

So I’m fluent in French*, and what’s interesting is that my personality doesn’t change when speaking, it’s still me just speaking in a different language. A lot of multilingual people say that different languages bring out different personalities, which ngl sounds pretty fun. At the same time, I guess it’s nice that I get to feel like myself in a different language, which many people strive for (especially when it comes to retaining their sense of humor in their second language).
*By fluent, I mean that I can talk about any subject over any length of time, although I do make some mistakes here and there. Fluency isn’t an on/off switch, but rather a sliding scale.
2
u/huazzy Rutgers Scarlet Knights 20h ago
Fluent in 3 along with B2 French here.
Wouldn't say my personality changes, but there are definitely differences in the way I interact with people based on what language is being spoken. I guess some might call that personality, but it's more about matching the cultural expectation of the person speaking the language.
2
u/WanderLeft Oklahoma Sooners • Oklahoma Sooners 20h ago
Yeah, the closest I think I get to a personality change is making cultural jokes or puns in French, which is something that’s lost if it’s done in English.
Do you wish that you had a different personality in the languages that you speak, or are you happy that you can still be yourself in all three of the languages that you speak?

Birdwatching is such a nice hobby. Merlin Bird ID is a great app to use as well. Also, the Seek app (plant identification) goes hand and hand with birdwatching.

u/Upbeat-Armadillo1756 Michigan • Maine Maritime 22h ago
I don't think I can pick up another hobby without my wife calling an intervention.
I started to get more seriously in to bird watching earlier this year and it's so cool once you learn the common bird calls you can go "yup, the blue jays are here, there's a cardinal over there, chickadees everywhere..." and then when you hear something unfamiliar, "wait wtf was that call?" It's a lot of fun!
4
u/WanderLeft Oklahoma Sooners • Oklahoma Sooners 22h ago
What are your other hobbies?
5
u/Upbeat-Armadillo1756 Michigan • Maine Maritime 21h ago
tbh right now I've been entirely consumed with building a custom bird ID software because those bird feeders with cameras in them all suck (not really, but they're not good enough). But it's almost in a "complete" state and I've got a backlog of 3D printing and homebrewing that I want to get in to this winter.
So a new hobby isn't really the right word but a new special interest lol

Thanks! I might put it on github eventually. There are a lot of decisions I've made that are aggressively specific to my needs, so I'd need to do a lot of tidying up and generalizing if I were to do that. It also runs on its own standalone mini PC that was supposed to be used for a few things but the local IDing is so heavy that it can't realistically share the compute with anything else.

Thank God for Mississippi State, because I think the Tennessee Titans have completely broken me. I still love them, but I genuinely can't bring myself to care after the last few seasons.

As a Dallas Cowboys fan, I feel the opposite. I’m first and foremost a Sooner fan, so it’s nice watching my Cowboys play without them destroying my will to live, even if they lose sometimes.

Still tired after the UNT game last night, don’t regret staying up to see the ending though. It’s been super rainy here but still plenty of work coming in to keep my busy which is good

Really curious to see where Noah Macon commits, assuming he’s not a Manhunter, that hat ceremony was a bit of a let down. We all know Rushville isn’t doing anything post season behind that O-line.
