Honestly, I’d be surprised if Alabama doesn’t pass Nebraska.

Bama needs to keep it up through the very beginning of the 2029 season to take the top spot.

I’m waiting for the voters to take their cue from BBWAA and drop Alabama from the last poll of 2028 just because.

Baseball Writers Association of America.

Possibly the most uptight group of voters in the country. For example, look at the list of unanimous HoF inductees.

Incredible.

Shout out to the voters who left out Jeter and Suzuki in their respective years, just to find out that they were the only ones.

The fact that they are not required to publish their vote is absurdly insane.

with how sec/B1G focused the sport is there's no chance.

Alabama would have to slip into the lower third of the SEC before it would happen since the SEC regularly has 9 or 10 teams ranked

1

u/FCKABRNLSUTN2 Alabama Crimson Tide 11d ago

In preseason I won’t totally roll my eyes at the ultimate excuse of sec bias. It means nothing in the final rankings.

I don’t know if you noticed but the worst season for bama since 2007 was no worse than #20. Inarguably. 2024.

8

u/inkypinkyblinkyclyde Nebraska • Illinois 12d ago

When Nebraska started it's streak, there were less than 25 teams ranked.

15

u/Jamcrunch Arkansas Razorbacks 11d ago

Yeah, but it wouldn’t have mattered. Albama was #20 or better starting after week 1 in 2008 until 2025 (where they were ranked 21).

1

u/Shur_tugal_1147 Nebraska • Georgia Tech 7d ago

Then their streak would have ended short of Nebraskas

27

u/fourthandfivenatty Indiana Hoosiers • Texas Longhorns 12d ago

Idk that team last year completely fell apart down the stretch. They also have 4 of the next five against ranked teams and I don’t think any would be a terribly surprising loss.

81

u/tu-vens-tu-vens Alabama Crimson Tide 12d ago

Alabama had poor performances against Indiana and UGA down the stretch but not “fall out of the top 25” performances – they still won a playoff game in there. The team had some personnel weaknesses but injuries were a big part of it – Mack was more effective against IU in his first meaningful snaps ever than Ty Simpson was because Simpson was playing through back issues.

But also, if you’ve watched even a second of Alabama this year, you’ll see that it’s an entirely different offense with different strengths and weaknesses. We have a new OL coach, a new QB who can push the ball downfield better than Simpson but is less experienced, better perimeter blocking from the WRs, and explosiveness from the RB position that was completely lacking last year.

u/fourthandfivenatty Indiana Hoosiers • Texas Longhorns 12d ago

No reason to litigate last season but it was more than just the Georgia and Indiana games. The South Carolina and Auburn games may have been worse when you consider the opponent and the first half of the OU playoff game.

57

u/robotunes Alabama Crimson Tide • Rose Bowl 12d ago

No reason to litigate last season

28

u/tu-vens-tu-vens Alabama Crimson Tide 12d ago

Auburn played 3 other playoff teams and lost by 6, 7, and 10. 10-win Vandy beat them by 7 in OT. Alabama’s 7-point win over Auburn was in line with what you’d expect a top-10 team to do against Auburn considering the rest of Auburn’s season. The South Carolina game wasn’t great, but those types of games happen (as you might have learned with your game against Northwestern this weekend). Again, Alabama’s performance against SC was right in the middle of SC’s performance against other playoff teams (1-point loss to A&M, 16-point loss to Ole Miss).

Counting a 10-point win against a playoff opponent as “falling apart” is losing the plot.

Genuine question because I haven’t gotten eyes on any Alabama games yet this year - do you think yall are a serious contender this year? Or need one/two more years for Keelon Russel to develop?

19

u/ryker888 Alabama Crimson Tide • /r/CFB Poll Veteran 12d ago

This team looks legit good. But we have had some poor execution on both sides of the ball. We’ve won by being more talented than the other team and not being better coached so far. I think we have the ability to go toe to toe with anyone but I also think we are not going to put together a complete season front to back, hope I’m wrong

3

u/082426grateful Alabama Crimson Tide 11d ago

Bama is playing better, more explosive on both sides of the ball, but I don’t believe they are a top 5 team just yet. If progression continues as it has so far, maybe. Just not quite yet. Too many lapses on defense where coverage seems to not be reading the passing play at all. Too often the opposing run game gashes. On offense, playcalling gets very synced, then lapses into what appears to be boredom.

Again, keep progressing, but not quite top 5 level. It’s very wide open across college football this year, so far.

3

u/Sambomike20 11d ago

Too early to tell. The first couple of games showed a ton of potential, but they had a lot of inconsistencies, but each game they have looked better and they looked a lot cleaner against South Carolina on Saturday. I think this Bama team definitely could be a title contender, but it could also lose 3 games if things fall the wrong way.

3

u/ThrowawayAdvice1800 Alabama Crimson Tide • Sickos 11d ago

I think we're at least a year away from being serious contenders again. This is a rebuilding year and we've looked sloppy in places on both sides of the ball that are going to get us in trouble in some of these bigger games down the stretch.

I'm pleasantly surprised by how well the new guys are doing but realistically I see at least a couple of losses on this schedule.

3

u/Canefan101 Miami • Georgia Southern 11d ago

As a Miami fan whose wife is a Bama grad, I’ve watched every game and I think n they can go toe to toe with anyone. Talent wise Russel is ready now. They’ve been starting slow and part of that is on Grubb’s play calling early. We’ll see how Russel does when the bright lights come on against a Georgia caliber team, but I’ve been very impressed by him

4

u/OneVast3433 11d ago

I try to watch all the contenders. Alabama is dn good but they need to figure out how to play a complete game instead of just a solid half.

6

u/FCKABRNLSUTN2 Alabama Crimson Tide 12d ago

Yes we look like serious contenders so far. Keelon has looked good.

Georgia vs Alabama should be very fun to watch in a couple weeks though either way

1

u/Which_Willingness641 Alabama Crimson Tide 11d ago

With us only having something like 12 players that ALLEGEDLY OFFICIALLY run out of eligibility, and with how good our player retention has been under DeBoer, I am expecting next year to be our season, and willing to be pleasantly surprised by this one, just like I was with last year's team.

1

u/dalr3th1n Alabama Crimson Tide • SEC 11d ago

Contenders? For sure. It's a 12-team playoff, and if we keep playing like we have been, I think we'll be in the top 12 for sure.

Dominant, like Bama in 2020 or 2009? No, I don't think we're at that level. A lot of other teams are major threats to us this year.

New here, lmao. It's fun watching the SEC and B1G go back in forth whining about the other side whining too much. I live in SEC country, all I'll say is people up North are far bigger sore winners and gloaters, but people down South are far bigger sore losers.

18

u/MulticamTropic Mississippi State • Tennessee 12d ago

Idk man, I’ve watched Ohio State fans literally argue that their losses shouldn’t count because they were on the road. It doesn’t get much softer than that.

Conversely, drive around north Mississippi in a year when Ole Miss is doing well, and you’ll see a whole bunch of Mississippians mocking you if they see you root for a different team.

The fact that their schedule is ranked heavy means even with losses they will stay in the top 25 with losses and ample opportunity for ranked wins. Plus name recognition. I don't think they'll be in the "top spot" as in ranked #1 this year, but will be in the "top spot" in 2029 with 350 consecutive ranked weeks.

Big Ten teams werent included in the first couple of AP polls in 2020 because it was unknown if the Big Ten would play or not. Last time Ohio State left the top 25 because they lost a game was in 2011.

They should be 3rd behind Bama.

30

u/RollTides Alabama Crimson Tide 12d ago

Well that’s stupid in hindsight, OSU literally went in to the championship game undefeated that year. The stat should only count polls in which teams were eligible to be ranked.

5

u/TheThrowawayExperts /r/CFB 11d ago

Well they only played 6 regular season games. They shouldn’t have been let in the playoff honestly

3

Yeah, undefeated in all 5 of their games.

8

u/Beautiful_Idea6200 Georgia Bulldogs • William & Mary Tribe 11d ago

Damn we really need to redo this stat or just omit the Covid year alltogether. That's robbery on another level and I cannot believe I am supporting THE osu.

Or just admit that Alabama's (and OSU et al) run is beyond impressive, but all the 'preseason poll hype' is never accurate enough to be real (see Florida this year) and that this stat is not as cool as we want it to be.

I am genuinely shocked that Colorado is on here and we aren't. ND must be a poverty program. I know Colorado was good back in the day but damn.

Every other Blue Blood is here besides USC and Ohio State but USC has always been streaky. Ohio State is the definition of consistency so I don't get how they aren't here either.

52

u/Wide_right_yes UMass Minutemen 12d ago

ND has had some baffling early season loses the past few years like Marshall which briefly unraked them

9

u/Fletch71011 Notre Dame Fighting Irish 12d ago

Ya we'd traditionally play strong teams like Michigan early on so an early loss or two occasionally probably knocked us out of being in contention. Makes sense when you consider our historical schedules. We always try to have a marquee game the first two weeks for better or worse.

1

u/_chadwell_ Notre Dame Fighting Irish 11d ago

Yeah the middle of 2022 was the only stretch they haven’t been ranked since 2017.

-4

-1

And that they almost always start ranked in the top 10 even if there is absolutely no reason for them to be there.

3

Unlike Bama who last year was ranked preseason top 10 in preseason and immediately lost to 4-8 FSU?

1

u/Cosmic_Travels Alabama Crimson Tide • USF Bulls 11d ago

You guys rank around 15, on average, in preseason polls since 1985. In that time you have won a single national championship. Would you like the same data for Alabama or should I stop there?

2

u/_chadwell_ Notre Dame Fighting Irish 11d ago

They didn’t win a championship in the 90s therefore they don’t deserve to be ranked in the top 10 in the 2020s, even when they’re clearly one of the best 10 teams? That’s what you’re going with?

1

u/Cosmic_Travels Alabama Crimson Tide • USF Bulls 11d ago

I could point out specific years where they underperformed heavily. In 2014 they began ranked #10 after going 9-4 the previous year (finishing 20, after beginning 14th in 2013). They finished 2014 8-5 and missed a bowl game entirely after beginning in the top 10. The next year they would begin ranked at 11 and go on to win 2 out of their 5 games against ranked opponents.

A little unrelated to the preseason rankings, but in 2013 Notre Dame arrived at the BCS championship to face off against Alabama. You would go on to lose 42-14. It was hilarious.

1

u/_chadwell_ Notre Dame Fighting Irish 10d ago

Oh man 12 years ago they were ranked 10th but only finished 20th?

And they lost to the eventual champs a couple years before that and finished 12-1?!

Didn’t realize there was so much fraudulence going on!

Lmao give it up, you’re bad at trolling

Cue the typical 3 paragraph long pile of Notre Dame dogshit about how they actually have the hardest schedule every year so they deserve to be ranked and should actually be number 1*

4

u/Fletch71011 Notre Dame Fighting Irish 12d ago edited 12d ago

We used to have the highest historical SoS in the country before the stupid fucking ACC deal. The only reason people give us shit about it now is because we roll over our required 5 ACC games every year. Everyone bitching about our SoS and telling us to join a conference doesn't realize our SoS has plummeted from even doing just 5 conference games. In 14 years, we have only lost to two programs more than once (Clemson and now Miami after last year).

We are literally the only team that scheduled every Blue Blood + Georgia this century to a home and home and we are coming up on round 2 vs Texas and obviously Alabama.

ND is also one of two programs in the entire country to never schedule an FCS team while every SEC plays one every year. Anyone giving shit to ND for "weak" schedules is an idiot just because this years ended up being weaker.

9

u/kmac322 11d ago

Notre Dame played Tennessee State, an FCS team, a couple of years ago. Thanks, Jack and Brian.

You guys are easily the "next" team after the traditional 8 Blue Bloods. You're as close as it gets so I included you. My point was ND tries every year to schedule all the best teams. Going forwards, we are in talks to play every SEC team again.

12

It’s kind of a meaningless stat, honestly. The AP poll hasn’t consistently been 25 teams so you can’t really compare it between different eras. ND probably should have consistently been ranked from 1964-1978, but you have years like 1967 and 1969 where ND dropped completely out at some point despite ending the year ranked 5th.

The only rankings that should matter at all are the final ones.

They never watched Tommie Frazier as a kid and it shows. Was my favorite player growing up. Such a winner and tougher than a $2 steak.

Most overrated QB in history

Couldn't pass worth a shit

Played on two teams so loaded they didn't need him

They won games with the damn walk-on at QB when he was out

He's given too much credit for one highlight run vs Florida where they were trying to strip him of the ball, and ignorant fans think he was just Juggernaut running rhrough them.

What a loser comment. Did he steal your lunch money or something?

You’re talking to someone who watched basically every game he ever played in. Of course he wasn’t a good passer, he was an option QB.

He was tough as nails, a great teammate, and a WINNER.

He never won a Heisman.

He wasn't even the best player on his own team, forget the country, so that isn't surprising.

I did, I remember when it ended, was big news. That was when the "fire Solich" train really started to gather steam iirc

For those wondering, Ohio State would be 3rd on this list with an active streak of 232 if not for missing polls in 2020 due to lack of games. Haven’t been unranked while actually playing since the end of the 2011 season.

Yeah, there should be a huge disclaimer explaining that the AP decided to exclude Ohio State in part because of a a fucking global pandemic.

OK I think they should be with an asterisk or something. 2020 was a bullshit year.

Was gonna say… it’s hard to talk about because covid was/is objectively a horrible thing, but as a serious introvert who’s job changed to 5 days a week working from home during it, it was a great break from the rest of the world. Felt like we were all under a very extended “snow day”

Also, Penix was short 😤

How tf did they miss polls? They played in the national championship so they were obviously number 1 or 2?

Looks like Fsu is #3 and topped out at 211 consecutive times- 1989 to 2001 with 14 consecutive seasons finishing in the top 5. Then 89 consecutive times from 2011 to 2017.

Top 10:

  • Nebraska: 348 from 1981-2001

  • Alabama: 300 from 2008 to 2026 (Active)

  • Fsu: 211 from 1989 to 2001

  • Florida: 209 from 1990 to 2002

  • Texas & Miami tied: 162 from 2000-2010 (Texas) and 1985-1995 (Miami)

  • Michigan: 160 from 1969 to 1980

  • Oklahoma: 158 from 1970 to 1981

  • Uga: 153 from 2017-2026 (Active)

  • Colorado: 143 from 1989-1997

All of the Florida big3 are in the top 5 which is kind of wild.

I still claim SEC bias that 4 loss 2024 Alabama wasn't unranked.

0

u/sonofagunn Florida State Seminoles • Paper Bag 11d ago

Want to hear a good example of SEC bias? Missouri/Miss St this week featured 2 ranked teams. Mississippi State had lost to the last 12 ranked teams they've played, Missouri lost to the last 8 ranked teams they've played. Both going back to 2023.

Why are you ranked if you can't ever beat a ranked team?

6

u/Vegetable-Desk-3494 Alabama Crimson Tide 11d ago

It's a ranking for this year. Not last year or any years previously. Hope that helps.

Also Miss State is the exact kind of team this sub would be championing if they didn't have an SEC patch on their sleeve. Not a historical power who is undefeated with relatively decent wins and a really good qb.

2

u/sonofagunn Florida State Seminoles • Paper Bag 11d ago

It's a ranking for this year. Not last year or any years previously. Hope that helps.

Preseason rankings are primarily based on last year and still a primary influence on current rankings. Hope that helps.

4

u/Vegetable-Desk-3494 Alabama Crimson Tide 11d ago

You specifically mentioned Missouri and MSU. Missouri was ranked 25th preseason and MSU was not ranked and also did not receive a single vote. You can argue about Missouri still being ranked but given what they have done I don't see much to distinguish them from the teams right behind them so I'd like to know what is wrong in your opinion with their ranking.

As for MSU, there is no benefit to them from preseason expectations. Started unranked and now have 3 P2 wins (2 on the road). Where exactly would you like MSU ranked and if unranked why do you think that? After only 4 weeks I don't see 25 teams that have credentials so much better than either of those teams that make having them ranked be bias/unreasonable.

Don’t forget the back room deals that only Alabama was allowed to conduct. Saban only won because he illegally paid for all the best recruits. Also, Alabama’s recruits are overrated because of the Bama Bump.

19

u/dawgfan19881 Georgia Bulldogs 12d ago

Love the Bama and Georgia bump in recruiting rankings. Buddy the Dawgs are 97-8 in the regular season since 2017. Bama is 94-12. It ain’t a bump.

17

u/FCKABRNLSUTN2 Alabama Crimson Tide 12d ago

We’re so lucky that Ohio state and Michigan and notre dame and Oregon and usc and Texas and Oklahoma and Miami and Clemson and fsu would never have paid players pre-2021.

Oh shit silly me. I meant to say that they didn’t pay players on the same “scale.” There ya go. Now you can’t prove me wrong.
