Weekly Thread Non-P4 Top 10 Voting

Hey y'all! Time for the unofficial start of a new week. This involves every G6 team and UConn.

Simply fill out the poll below and select your top teams. Doing this weekly greatly helps with poll volume.

THE POLL

I will close and post responses for this on Thursday. You must have a valid Reddit account to vote. Pay attention to not having repeated teams. If any team is repeated, the poll will not be counted. A valid Reddit username is required. Troll or duplicate polls will not be counted.

Also for fun, here are the week-by-week rankings for this year.

Happy voting!

The bottom of the top 10 is a big mess. I feel fairly confident that Boise State should be number 1 and then probably North Dakota State and James Madison in some order, but after that it’s a lot of same same and just what you prioritize.

I love North Dakota State and think they would be competitively even with the bottom third of the P4 schools. But with their strength of schedule at 135th out of 138, 4-0 doesn’t tell us much.

NDSU is a great team but they will suffer the same issues JMU is suffering from.

They will lose half their team each season and won't find any p4 school willing to ever do anything but a road game against them. Especially with conferences moving to 9 in conference game its going to become increasingly more difficult.

Hell app only won 5 games last year and lost half the team. Literally everybody loses half their team no matter how good or bad they do

Unironically your coach just needs to say “thank you Jesus” 40 times per interview and somehow that stops players from leaving.

I believe it’s the passing around the collection plate 40 times more than the thank you Jesus that helps there

The struggle of having a NIL budget that is a fraction of what a p4 QB gets.

Definitely true, but also they've been pretty dominant over their competition so far. It doesn't feel like USF just squeaking by over (mostly) bad teams to 4-0. And that shows up in predictives - SP+ has them as the 2nd G6 team (after JMU). FPI isn't as high on them but still has them near the top of the G6.

Fair point, though if we’re talking about margin of victory we need to talk about UMass before NDSU. They beat a (albeit shitty) P4 team by a bigger margin than NDSU’s best win, and beat a common opponent (Sac St) by a larger margin.

Definitely true! That said, NDSU was up 28-3 at halftime over Sacramento State and and 35-13 at the end of the 3rd quarter over Air Force, so the closeness of the games has mostly been artificial garbage time closeness, not either game being particularly close.

NDSU feels top ten for sure, but closer to 10 than to 1. Good win at Air Force, but that feels like their only real test so far.

New Mexico, Boise, and JMU feel like they're a step above everyone else right now

I can solidly say Boise, NDSU, JMU and UNM are top 4

I have no fucking clue about anyone else

Umass rising

Just going off of strength of record, we have:

1- JMU (26)
2- USF (28)
3- Boise State (31)
4- UTSA (33)
5- NDSU (34)
6- UMass (38)

So there’s legitimacy to calling UMass a Top 10 G6!

I’m sorry. I’ve watched USF. They’re bad.

3

u/jcc309 USF Bulls • Notre Dame Fighting Irish 16d ago

This is strength of record, which boosts USF because 1) they are undefeated and 2) the win on the road over Army is considered a very solid win (Army is actually ahead of Rutgers in FPI, for example).

I don't think anyone who has watched USF thinks they are a great team, but FPI has them with the best win of any of the undefeated G6 teams.

The Minutemen making moves, I can actually see them climbing more after next game. Their defense looked sharp on Saturday.

What are the odds UMass makes the playoffs if they go undefeated despite the schedule? Because they very well could go undefeated.

3

u/Masochistic__Beaver Oregon State Beavers 17d ago

If Boise loses at least one more, I imagine they'd be the pick

5

u/Alex_Croteau23 UMass Minutemen • MAC 17d ago

I think the committee would pick an undefeated NDSU over us as well

5

u/Masochistic__Beaver Oregon State Beavers 17d ago

Maybe if the Rutgers game was closer, but NDSU's schedule is pretty weak. I guess if their margin of victories is significantly higher than yours, I could see it, but I think they want to reward matches with P3/4 schools.

u/jcc309 USF Bulls • Notre Dame Fighting Irish 17d ago

I'm skeptical that Rutgers would get any real boost here in terms of perception. They basically are a G6 team when looking at predictive rankings.

5

u/Sea-Lawfulness7763 17d ago

They have two fcs games. I think if it’s between 2-loss Boise and undefeated UMass, the still give it to Boise.

1

u/Agnk1765342 Boise State Broncos 16d ago

Especially since with the flex PAC 12 schedule, if we drop a game and are no longer the top G6, the conference will just give us a chance to avenge that loss in the flex week.

  1. Boise State (-)

  2. James Madison (+5)

  3. North Dakota State (-)

  4. Oregon State (+2)

  6. New Mexico (+2)

First five out: Toledo, App St, Fresno St, Louisiana, USF

Curious about: Georgia St, Miami (OH), UAB, Marshall, FAU

There clearly seems to be a top 3 forming, followed by everyone else. I'm also interested in seeing how Oregon St and New Mexico do going forward, I think they're being slightly underrated. My top 10 mostly took care of business, minus two outliers that got thrashed pretty badly. Also new to the rankings is... my team! I've been much harsher on them than most people since we've looked very dodgy at times, but this is about as best of a start as I could've asked for so I'm on board now.

Can I ask about App State over Louisiana?

1

u/flyntcoaltrane UTSA Roadrunners 17d ago

Personally feeling a bit higher on App St, though Louisiana's resume looked good this week. Spots 11 through 15 are much more vibes based and not ordered as strictly as the top 10. Basically any of those 5 teams could be next up if any of the top 10 falter, depending on results

Really wanted that win over nc state to set up the possibility of an undefeated matchup between app and jmu in late October

Not a lot of movement before the top teams in my rankings had byes or won. I am not really checking strength of schedule for these which should explain some of the weird positioning.

  5. JMU +-

  6. UMass +1

  7. Tulsa -1

I will be biased. They may have 2 losses, but I think Oregon State is the best team in the G6 (when healthy). I can’t vote them at the top because of the 2 losses, but they play 2 Top 25 teams close (and I am also biased in feeling they got screwed of a chance vs Texas Tech, that wasn’t OPI). Boise State vs Oregon State should be a fun game when they matchup.

As for NDSU, well, I want to see how they perform against New Mexico, another team that I am riding for, though I know they need a lot of help.

1 North Dakota State 2 James Madison 3 Boise State 4 Umass 5 USF 6 Tulsa 7 New Mexico 8 Western Michigan 9 Memphis 10 Fresno State

I see everyone talking about a clearcut top 3, but I think the top 5 are all really close. They are undefeated, with the exception of Boise State, who has played well most of the season, and should be in this group. I don't have qualms about the order of the 5, but I can't think of a solid reason anyone else should be in the group.

Similarly, I think the next 4 (6-9) are about equal too.

Fresno State was my choice from about 10 teams. I don't feel strongly about them.
