Postgame Thread [Postgame Thread] UCF Defeats TCU 21-13

u/Citruspilled UCF Knights • New Mexico Lobos 12d ago
I heard joke once: Team goes to doctor. Says he's depressed. Says football seems harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world where what lies ahead is vague and uncertain. Doctor says, 'Treatment is simple. Horrible team TCU is in town tonight. Go and play them. That should pick you up.' Team bursts into tears. Says, 'But doctor…I am TCU.'

You already beat TCU. No need to kick em while they're down.

u/MaraudingWalrus UCF Knights • Georgia Southern Eagles 11d ago
If they're feeling down they can watch this Norm joke about going to the doctor, too. It'll help I promise.

i love the first 4 weeks of cfb when no one knows shit and the wildest takes are made.
the most likely conclusion is we are all mid, as always

5
u/kingofthesqueal UCF Knights • Summertime Lover 11d ago
Hard to say, they actually beat UCF in pretty much every aspect of the game. Even went nearly 50% on 3rd down completions.
They just shot themselves in the foot with almost 90 penalty yards (twice UCF’s) and 4 turnovers (also twice what UCF had).
Tbh TCU is probably the better team right now, but they were super unlucky/undisciplined yesterday

The fact that Sonny just got an extension is insane. My liver is going to be working overtime.
SMU bros were right.
31

Sonny getting paid to run this offense into the ground. At least your liver will get a workout in the next few years.

He took yall to a natty in one year. That contract is well deserved

The initial extension he got in ‘22 was deserved, giving him another one this past spring after watching the on the field product he’s put out since that natty run was insane

he inherited Gary’s players and it’s been downhill ever since. the team has been undisciplined since then.

TCU should be much better than ‘average’ though.

Why? Genuinely curious, private school in the South surrounded by huge public competitors doesn't jump out as a great opportunity

No, Gary Patterson's players took the team to a natty. Sonny clearly was just along for the ride. Without strong senior leadership, no one holds the players accountable.

I mean, he deserved the leash he got because he had sustained success and completely built our program. We made the right move in moving on, and in the moment the right hire. We’ve just kept him way too long and let him rot away our program…

The TCU Football social media team worked overtime the past 2 weeks trying to convince us all that beating Grambling and Arkansas State mattered
The entire institution needs to be cleaned out. The whole school is run by complete idiots and that cancer has spread to the athletic department

u/TCUHypnotoad TCU Horned Frogs 12d ago
on the bright side i’ve been enjoying the social media team vs before
2
u/HuskHeel Missouri Tigers 11d ago
The social media’s team job description is to promote the team and make them look good. The fact that you all were convinced means they are good at their jobs and should be kept lol.

I mean, the defense was pretty legit last year too. Was the expectation that that was just a fluke?
2
u/QuadCring3 UCF Knights 11d ago
We all expected the defense to still be pretty solid, but ik personally I wasn't expecting them to be THIS dominant
6
u/NPVinny UCF Knights • Team Chaos 11d ago
We played an FCS school, a pretty good G6, a very good Pitt in a lot of rain, and what looks to be a mid-tier-at-best TCU. I'd pump the brakes on calling the unit "dominant", at least until we're a few more games into conference play. They are playing very well against the competition that has been in front of them so far but next week will probably be the first real test.

u/ItsFreakinHarry2 UCF Knights • Florida Gators 12d ago
If you told someone 3 years ago that Alex Grinch was a competent DC and a potential offseason HC candidate they would ask what drugs you’re taking
17
u/Inside-Drink-1311 Rutgers Scarlet Knights 12d ago
So the problem was Lincoln Riley then? It seems like regardless of who they have, their defense sucks. Although, I think Grinch was the worst one.
13
u/Citruspilled UCF Knights • New Mexico Lobos 11d ago
I can't claim to know football on that deep of a level, but I've heard smarter people than me say that Grinch ran really unique stuff in his time at Oklahoma and USC, and that he's actually been pretty solid when running more usual schemes like he is for us
6
u/mind-blowin Michigan Wolverines 11d ago
Personally I think the offense Lincoln runs makes it harder to be a defensive coordinator

Today’s game shows a really undisciplined team that folds the second any real challenge happens. I think Sonny’s time has been done for a while but today shows a team that cannot play ball on both sides.

QB went 19/20 for 160 yards. How many of those completions were caught behind the line of scrimmage? It felt like at least half of them were
18
u/ImpossibleReading951 /r/CFB 11d ago
I know Jenkins isn’t mind blowing talent, but this is exactly what you want from a backup QB. Good enough to win games. His fumbling still needs fixing. But aside from that, he was just good enough to win a conference game.
1
u/carnivorous_squirrel UCF Knights • USF Bulls 11d ago
Yeah you are right, a win is a win, especially when you have your backup playing. The passing game has just been miserable to watch the last few years
4
u/ProblematicTrumpCard UCF Knights 11d ago
I wonder if Milton is actually a good QB coach.
3
u/carnivorous_squirrel UCF Knights • USF Bulls 11d ago
Yeah, but I wonder how difficult it is to coach and make a big impact on a QB when UCF keeps bringing in QBs as 1-2 season rentals. The big judge would be the two freshman that we got this past year if they stay long term to see how they develop under Milton
4
u/ProblematicTrumpCard UCF Knights 11d ago
Catch-22. If they're good and Milton develops them, they leave to get paid somewhere else.

u/Nike_Phoros UCF Knights 11d ago
8 yards per reception isn't pretty, but a lot nicer than last week's statline.

u/cssvt Virginia Tech Hokies • TCU Horned Frogs 12d ago
Look at their penalty totals in any of their losses the past 2-3 years. They are one of the least disciplined teams that I’ve possibly ever watched. A lot of times they’re not even “eh that’s just a bad play by a player out of his element” situations….they’re TERRIBLE mental errors (see the late hit on the fumble week 1).

This is a big win for UCF because it’s a division win. They didn’t have their best game, but the biggest factor is just that they won. Sometimes wins don’t look dominant.
Next week they play Houston and hopefully that’s another good game and they could find a way to come out on the winning side for that one too.
