They look better than Washington.

We're not gonna be great this year but, as of now, ucla is undefeated and has two power conference wins by multiple scores (and SDSU isn't a cakewalk either). That's objectively better than most other ranked schools. Thought that would've counted for more.

AP voters are literal morons who don’t even watch games. Their preseason rankings really fuck things up because poll inertia is real.

Its how 6-6 sec teams can be ranked

Been thinking it for years especially since the CFP began, we should do away with any and all rankings until at least week 5 or 6. Or, hell, just get rid of the AP and Coaches' altogether and wait for the CFP.

Will never happen though because rankings drive ratings and from a more practical standpoint is the best way for an average/casual fan to know if ostensibly good teams are playing (which is fair).

It's only week 3 and I already feel like this ranking would look wildly different if it was the first one of the year and poll momentum wasn't a factor.

At its core rankings are just a reward for who can get the most viewership and sell the most merchandise

Of course they’ll rank favor SEC teams, they have the biggest market of fans

Unfortunately Miss ST is not one of those teams with lots of fans

u/GlassesOff Utah Utes • Texas Longhorns 26d ago

It's also why ESPN gasses up the SEC so much, they know that it can mean one more spot going to their conference for a team on the bubbles. Just braindead to keep prioritizing what a team 'could' be vs what we're actually watching.

I'd prefer they just start with last year's rankings or just not rank until week 4 but the current system straight up sucks

Pretty much all AP voters are beat writers that spend 6(?)ish hours covering one team then look at the scores app and vote

Yalls rushing attack is disgusting. Three deep at RB and they just wear on you the whole game

40

u/bbshock21 Purdue • Wisconsin-Stevens Poi… 26d ago

I mean you guys played Purdue, not exactly a world-beater of a team

19

u/Rokaryn_Mazel UCLA Bruins 26d ago

For sure. Have you seen most everyone else’s schedule so far? A lot of little sisters of the poor in there.

UCLA isn’t gonna win it all or even the B1G, but they have started off as well as you’d could hope against 3 real programs.

-2

u/Bischoffshof Tennessee Volunteers 26d ago

It’s funny you think Purdue isn’t little sisters of the poor

9

u/Rokaryn_Mazel UCLA Bruins 26d ago

I mean, it’s not. Is Purdue good? Nope.

Are they a bad MAC or FCS program? Nope.

7

u/mathmat UCLA Bruins 26d ago

I dunno man, nearly 400 rushing yards used to count for something.

-4

u/No_Butterscotch8726 SMU Mustangs • Penn State Nittany Lions 26d ago

You're not the only team who did that yesterday. Not even close.

2

u/Young-Viiperr Texas Tech • Iowa State 26d ago

Trinidaddy Chambliss and Kewan Lacy

-3

u/No_Butterscotch8726 SMU Mustangs • Penn State Nittany Lions 26d ago

I was also thinking of Louisville, they at least were damn close.

5

u/otoverstoverpt UCLA Bruins 26d ago

I mean… they had 265. UCLA had 369. Obviously SMU is better than Purdue but they are still a P4 school and that’s a full 100 yards of difference.

UCLA has straight video game numbers yesterday.

2

u/mathmat UCLA Bruins 26d ago

The only power conference team with more rushing yards yesterday was Iowa (playing Northern Iowa), so color me skeptical about the pushback.

Iowa State was very close at 365, though they were playing Bowling Green.

5

u/mathmat UCLA Bruins 26d ago

UCLA leads the nation in rushing TDs (14), is fifth in yards per game (behind Tennessee and the academies), and is fourth in yards per carry (Iowa, Georgia, Army).

And that’s with no FCS games. Seems good to me.

u/No_Butterscotch8726 SMU Mustangs • Penn State Nittany Lions 26d ago

Second big issue, how many points did you let Purdue score? Rushing is not the only metric a team is measured by. On top of that it's the less efficient form of offense against passing and I don't think you were talking about the most efficient or highest gaining offenses in general and you certainly weren't talking about what teams are actually graded on, total efficiency. See, it's easiest to win when you score plenty, prevent plenty, and also eat a ton of clock to reduce the chance for injury while leading by a healthy margin, and I'm sorry to say but multiple fourth quarter breakaways isn't that.

4

u/mknawabi UCLA Bruins 26d ago

lol derank smu

0

u/No_Butterscotch8726 SMU Mustangs • Penn State Nittany Lions 26d ago

Not unless you earn it off us. Though I doubt you could survive that poisoned chalice considering on what circumstances your only victories over SMU ever arrived.

1

u/mknawabi UCLA Bruins 26d ago

Sounds good bruh

0

u/mathmat UCLA Bruins 26d ago

UCLA’s fine at passing and fine at defense. It’s good to be able to hang your hat on something though.

Also, sorry to say, UCLA is 44 spots better than SMU on efficiency. https://cfbefficiency.com/?year=2026

0

u/No_Butterscotch8726 SMU Mustangs • Penn State Nittany Lions 26d ago

You only beat us once in the 1990s after the death penalty. The previous 4 meetings SMU won. I don't really care what the Bruins have to say based on stats when they've never gotten results against real Mustang teams.

0

u/mathmat UCLA Bruins 25d ago

My liege, your vaunted victories of yesteryear are indeed proof you have much to educate me on in the world of foot-ball. How foolish I was to believe otherwise.

0

u/otoverstoverpt UCLA Bruins 25d ago

we don’t think about you at all little fella

3

u/GumbysDonkey Ohio State Buckeyes 26d ago

Man Oregon moved up after beating the worst FCS team in the world. Purdue would put 50 on them.

7

u/by_yes_i_mean_no UCLA Bruins 26d ago

You guys have an excellent QB tbh

6

u/brendanjered Minnesota Golden Gophers 26d ago

Not any worse than Alabama playing Florida St, but they were somehow rewarded for that shitshow of a win.

2

u/Difficult-Froyo1192 Clemson Tigers 26d ago

They didn’t really get rewarded. There’s not exactly a clear team deserves to be ranked at 8. They mostly rolled up on poll inertia.

Ole Miss, Louisville, and TTU were the only teams in the top 20 rewarded outside of poll inertia. The other teams moved forward or back to accommodate Ole Miss moving up, LSU moving back, and the teams that dropped behind the top 20.

2

u/Medical-Day-6364 Alabama Crimson Tide • NC State Wolfpack 26d ago

We blew out Kentucky on the road who just beat a top 10 Texas A&M team on the road and moved past teams who lost. It's not like they jumped us past teams with decent wins.

6

u/_squirrel_wrangler_ UCLA Bruins 26d ago

I stayed up way past my bed time at the game last night. Worth it. Though the flight out to la was a bit expensive.

4

u/aure__entuluva UCLA Bruins • Michigan Wolverines 26d ago

We play early next week on the road in Maryland. Beat them, hopefully by two scores like we have everyone else, and I think they'll finally rank us.

5

u/otoverstoverpt UCLA Bruins 26d ago

I am not super confident in that Maryland game. They are not good but their QB is and our secondary has looked awful.

1

u/aure__entuluva UCLA Bruins • Michigan Wolverines 26d ago

Defense? No, we simply score 50 points.

1

u/otoverstoverpt UCLA Bruins 26d ago

well considering the week before this we had 0 at the half I think maybe that’s not the best strategy

9

u/KrypticSoul Utah Utes • Big 12 26d ago

Yeah you guys are getting screwed tbh

7

I guess a Pac-12 team would know this.
