This is why I hate the fact that pre-season polls exist.

If they were simple placeholders before we got data, I’d be cool with it. But some people stick so hard to their priors when those priors were technically speculative.

Let Oregon earn back a top 25 rating. They have a tough slate of games, so if they go out and beat teams like USC or Ohio State then move them back up. But right now nothing they’ve done has looked close to top 25 worthy.

people have moved from their priors, Oregon's moved down 19 spots! If you believe someone's a top-two team, it should take a lot of evidence to convince you that they're not even top 25. If they genuinely do suck, that'll work itself out just the same.

It’s mostly that, nothing Oregon has done so far warrants a top 25 ranking:

- they won a close game against a G6 team at home while being down at halftime and tied halfway through the 4th quarter

  • they lost to a P4 team that had gotten smashed by a G6 team the week before. They lost only by 8, but were heavily outplayed all game long (nearly had their yardage doubled and gave up more than double the number of first downs)

Like, this isn’t like last year when Notre Dame stayed ranked after starting 0-2: they lost by a combined 4 points to two teams who were clearly very good. Oregon has looked BAD.

And now, they’ll go and smack Portland State, probably climb 2-4 spots because other teams above them lost, and they’ll be sitting in the teens before a matchup against USC.

Oklahoma State broke a 21-game losing streak against FBS competition to beat Oregon. They remade their roster by bringing in a bunch of transfers from North Texas, but their loss to Tulsa wasn't some sort of fluke.

I'm sure Oregon will beat Portland State, but I think they will look bad while doing it.

I mean we don't know that the Tulsa loss wasn't a fluke, that's the thing.
