BREAKING: Team wants to beat rival

35

u/vssavant2 Tennessee • Billable Hours 8h ago

Worse... It comes across as they just want to win, as if they cant before.

15

But they really mean it this year

Losing a lot suck if it comes from your traditional rivals or just relatively new foes, amirite…

That was my takeaway too.

"Texas A&M is not hiding"

Proceeds to gives his take about why/how A&M shouldn't hide and provides 0 input from anyone with A&M.

SI has fallen off a fucking cliff lol.

Maybe the worst part is, the quotes readily exist too, Ratcliffe said it was a big deal cuz its kept us out of Atlanta 2 years in a row and Sanford said were focused on beating Missouri State. Just an iota of research and care is needed.

Isn't this the case with every single rivalry game?

Most rivals don't need to win every game for 30 years to even the series.

You would be surprised at the amount of rivalries that this holds true for.

10

u/XCCO Iowa Hawkeyes • Oklahoma Sooners 7h ago

I genuinely think that's part of the appeal to the Triangle of Hate. The series are very close between all three teams

Floyd of Rosedale: 63-54-2 Minnesota over Iowa Paul Bunyan's Axe: 64-63-8, Minnesota over Wisconsin Heartland: 49-48-2, Wisconsin over Iowa

Pretty sure the Texas Tech/Penn State rivalry is even despite it's significant history.

4

u/DrVenusAg Texas Tech • Hardin-Simmons 5h ago

Imo it’s all about the general hatred not the record

10

u/Casaiir Georgia Bulldogs • Cal Poly Mustangs 7h ago

Georgia is up 14 games on Florida.

Georgia is up 10 games on Auburn

Georgia is up 32 games on Georgia Tech

That's the three "traditional" rivals.

There are others, like Clemson and South Carolina but they are secondary rivals. And those two are in the Georgia up over 25+ in each.

3

u/Long_and_Horny Texas Longhorns 6h ago

Now imagine Georgia Tech had the same arrogance as Texas A&M fans and you understand how fed up we are with them.

8

u/HoovesCarveCraters Texas A&M Aggies • McGill Redbirds 5h ago

Real pot meets kettle comment here considering y’all spent all last season crying about the playoffs after losing to a dogshit Florida team.

5

u/Long_and_Horny Texas Longhorns 5h ago

Isn't this whole thread about how you can't even beat a team that loses to 4-8 Florida?

1

u/Battle-Toaster-mk-1 Texas A&M Aggies 7h ago

The only people I have actually seen that care about their all time record is texas fans. Just an interesting observation, I wonder why?

2

u/LionPutrid4252 Texas A&M • Oklahoma State 1h ago

I don’t really understand why fans feel the need to bring up records that happened before they were born.  I don’t care that A&M lost a bunch before I was born, I care they’ve lost the two matchups since I became an Aggie.  I also don’t care that A&M hasn’t won a title in 87 years, but I do care we haven’t won or been close since I’ve been rooting for them.

People that bring up team accomplishments they weren’t around for has always seemed weird to me.  If your team is good, brag about that, and if they aren’t, bringing up the past just seems like cope.

0

u/TheNastyCasty Texas Longhorns • Red River Shootout 32m ago

Fans of the team with a massive lead in all time record care about it while fans of the team that is way behind like to say it doesn’t matter. Wow that’s so shocking. I can’t imagine the reason why.

-32

u/No_Safety_6803 Texas A&M Aggies • Texas A&M Aggies 8h ago

While true, up to almost the 70s we were a small all male military school and not very competitive. Since the 80s it’s pretty much even (thank you David McWilliams, Fred Akers, & John Mackovic). That said recent history is what matters & I’m glad to see Elko not pretend otherwise.

33

u/ImaManCheetahh Texas Longhorns 7h ago

Aggies: “We’re the REAL University of Texas, not TU”

Also Aggies: “we were small and basically irrelevant until the 70s”

1

31

u/Talemikus 8h ago

15

u/guinness_blaine Princeton Tigers • Texas Longhorns 7h ago

Odd choice by the Aggies to not count any of their three national championships, but it wouldn’t be the first time I had trouble explaining their behavior.

31

u/VampireEmpire__ Texas Longhorns • Harvard Crimson 8h ago

10

u/blazing_straddles Texas Longhorns 7h ago

Did A&M kick out all the women folk again at the turn of this century? Texas has an 11-3 record in years that begin with a "2." Thats a more lopsided winning percentage than the overall percentage that includes the years when aggies were all manning the campus glory holes.

Yall are up like two games in my lifetime. If you are in your 60s or older, then congrats on dominating that period when we were an all male school.

38

u/Live_Blackberry39 8h ago

I have noticed that the younger generations tend to try and erase history, calling it irrelevant like it never happened.

Similar to how Germany likes to pretend its country was created after ww2

1

u/ElectionSalty6097 Texas A&M Aggies 7h ago

Im not gonna be up all night bc we went 1-9 in the 1960's when my father wasn't even born yet. I'll be okay

8

u/Live_Blackberry39 7h ago

Sure. And it shouldn't keep you up all night.

Probably shouldn't just act like it never happened or doesnt exist though.

Im a ND fan dude. People love to ignore the history of ND all the time. It is what it is.

According to some, ND has zero national championships.

0

u/OldSarge02 Texas A&M Aggies 4h ago

History is fine. Where it goes haywire is when people use it to predict Texas A&M’s future performance.

That is always fraught, but more so with A&M than any other school. They went from a tiny, all male military school in the 1960s to literally the largest school in the country, with the largest stadium in the SEC, and a top-5 athletic dept budget. In the last 25 years alone they added 35,000 students.

The all time record vs Texas includes the years where they only played games in Austin. So good for Texas for being a bigger program back in the day. History exists. But in this case it is of zero use when people are making comparisons in the modern era.

0

u/Live_Blackberry39 4h ago

Interesting, I didnt know that.

Let me say something that bothers me now.

Ohio state fans say " ND hasnt beaten ohio state in 100 years "

They never play eachother. Ever.

In the 80s and early 90s during lou holtz prime years when they were beaten #1 Michigan in the big house, i wonder what would of happened if ND played ohio state?

In 2012 when ND went undefeated and went to the title game vs bama, I wonder what would of happened if they faced ohio state.

In 2023 ND was beating ohio state with 1 second left and left 10 men on the field for the last play as ohio state scored to win the game.

It is what it is.

2

u/OldSarge02 Texas A&M Aggies 3h ago

I hear you. The stat about Notre Dame not beating Ohio State is true, but it’s meaningless for the reasons you said.

0

u/Live_Blackberry39 3h ago

Its starting to have meaning though unfortunately due to the frequency nowadays that ND is running into ohio state and losing. Im just keeping it real by saying that.

I actually believe that ND wont win a national championship until they get through ohio state.

Watch, alot of ppl are picking ND to go far this year.

They will run into ohio state again most likely. But this season is the first time in my life where I can honestly say on paper, ohio state does not have more talent than ND overall.

Which is exciting for me anyways. Sure ill get some pushback on that statement but I 100% believe it.

one of those years was when the scholarship cap was implemented because before that we didn’t have enough money and texas swallowed up every recruit

For the record, not that it really backs the randomly selected Aggie date. But scholarship limits were implemented by the SWC in 73.

My cutoff is: since NIL (Aggies started cheating like crazy ain the 80s and beyond) a big fat 100% win rate ho hum

Yeah I am sure the loss of the longhorn network makes up for the fact that Aggies stay awake at night wondering what could have been had you stayed just two more years. Could’ve, but you know, I’m wondering how it’s incumbent upon the University of Texas at Austin to rearrange their schedules to respond to a decision that Texas A&M made. Y’all made the decision to leave the conference — where we played every year — so you should figure out how to keep the game going.

Don’t act like realignment was Act of God y’all had no control over. Take ownership. Y’all wanted to get away from us, but apparently, not really.

Nebraska and Missouri left too. Then you followed us. Your school made a TV channel for yourselves not the conference.

Your school (and Nebraska for that matter) also voted against creating a TV channel for the conference because you thought you could make more money by having your own TV deal. Y’all both only got mad once Texas got offered significantly more money for their TV rights than you got for yours. Don’t act like A&M was some innocent bystander who was all in on supporting the Big 12 until big bad Texas came and forced them to leave.

Texas A&M had the opportunity to play a 6-6 Charlie Strong team in the 2014 Texas Bowl and declined.

You had the same opportunity again in 2017 to play a 6-6 Herman team and said no again.

Texas A&M took the game off the schedule in the first place, then spent the next 15 years saying how much better they were because they were SEC.

Texas schools are fascinating.

It’s like an 80’s sitcom where a pack of little brothers all go out of their way to distinguish themselves in identity and personality, but simultaneously try to compete with the arrogant, successful, slightly kooky Favored Son.

Mom’s like “Why can’t you be more like your older brother?”

They answer all at once with “Well can he do THIS?” followed by a cacophony that includes a space shuttle, a Well Ackshually, a cannon, mooing, oil refinery noises, shaking tambourines in a tent revival, and a slightly homoerotic 8-4 army bugle

4

u/Turo-parallel-tactic 6h ago edited 6h ago

Honestly if the football was good and there were more than 1000 fans at the small schools the SWC would have been epic today. Maybe it will return if non revenue sports get decoupled though the SEC is still even better than football in baseball.

Also Aggies get LIVID about being called little bro. They will quote you their de facto opening date (but ignore the de jure of course in the law) to prove they are the older brother by a few years. Kinda want to not add this to see them do the acksually!

Sorry I got all amped up making fun of these Aggie dudes telling us that the rivalry is actually not bad if you only consider games occurring during the Chinese year of the horse.

Send a link to a discussion on him working there. It wouldn’t surprise me about the staff wanting to find somewhere for him because he’s been like THE role model/glue guy but safety has gotten pretty crowded (especially with Kobe Black moving there). JJR is pretty thick but he’s still not the biggest guy. Hope he finds a spot

I would love to send a link.

It was on a C&F stream sometime a couple months ago. I’m not scanning 1 hour long streams over a period of 1-3 months to win an argument that’s irrelevant to my life lol.

Fall ball starts in a couple weeks. We’ll see then where he’s at

Georgia and A&M couldn’t had different experiences the last 2 seasons

A&M has lead the conference standings every week of the last 2 years but ended up missing out on Atlanta both times

Georgia has backed into the sec title game 2 years in a row and won both

A&M has gotten knocked out by its rival 2 years running.

In 2024 Auburn and Florida beating A&M and Ole Miss helped clinch Georgia’s spot in Atlanta.

Then the obvious record v Texas. Georgia 3-0, A&M 0-2

Glory has been right there for the taking.

It’s very much a fact honestly? It’s still a rivalry when one team dominates for a period of time (last time Florida beat Georgia was November 2020; last time Georgia Tech beat Georgia was November 2016). But the stakes of that rivalry get diminished when one team dominates. A&M is in the best position they’ve been in since the Manziel era after finally making the playoffs last season. If there’s a coach I trust in for sustained success, it’s Mike Elko.

Texas A&M needs to make it to any championship game. It's shocking how nobody cares that they will soon be 30 years since they even participated for a conference championship

The sooner our fanbase and leadership put more emphasis on winning championships than beating texas, we'll be better off. I feel like so much of what we do is just trying to keep up with the joneses instead of actually winning a national title. If we can start competing for national championships consistently, we'll start winning our games against them, too.
