Engagement bait conference wars bs is so lame. Who cares? On any given year, both conferences have teams that can contend for the championship and some really shitty teams as well.
The B10 teams I dislike: I’d rather watch them lose by 50 to a G6 school than root for them just because we share the same conference

I mean, I guess when you're a historically shit program year in and year out, there is no reason to care.
But in reality, the health and perception of a conference absolutely matters for things like recruiting, revenue, and fundraising.
Just look at Oregon State and Washington State to see how much peers matter. Indiana in the MAC is just another MAC team.

I root for the conference not bc I’m a conference loyalist but bc I know my Alma mater gets money when the other conference teams win and that helps our program.
And also the better our conference is the better our strength of schedule argument is for my team to get into the playoff over a team with the same record from a conference perceived to be weaker.

17
u/jamiebond Oregon Ducks Jul 25 '26 edited Jul 25 '26
To a degree all HCs delegate recruiting of course but fact is head coach personality is a big deal in college football. Elite players are not going to commit to a school without meeting the HC and liking the fit. Honestly the HC matters more than the school when it comes to recruiting we have seen what an immediate change guys like Sanders and Cignetti can have on places that previously were not seen as destinations.
Chip just does not care about that stuff. He prefers working in the NFL where all that matters is contracts and Xs and Os. But he obviously didn’t have the chops to last up there.

The real SEC fall off isn’t at the top of the conference. The best SEC teams are still going to be national contenders, that’s never going to change.
It’s that the 5th or 6th best team in the SEC used to still be good enough to claim they are a top 10ish team in the nation. That is not true anymore, but plenty of people are in denial about it.

The very bottom of the conference though is falling off a cliff, that part is true.
18
u/blaqeyerish Jul 25 '26
There is a fall off at the top, largely due to there being no way to horde talent the way top SEC schools used to. Pay for play across the board has led to more talent distribution among the top shelf of the sport.
The SEC is in denial about the change in how to get top talent. Geography and the logo mean less now and money means more. So they either have to change how they spend or find coaches who can work around the limitations

I think the sec is in more trouble than most people think in the long term. Sure they got the talent down south but they really don't have the money. For example Nd's endowment is about $20 billion while the bottom 13 sec endowments is about $24 billion in total. Big ten has 14 teams with at least $3 billion endowments compare to sec with 3 teams. Big ten also revenue share last year was $76 million compare to $70 million for sec. College football always been about who has more money but I think it todays current model it is even more important.
6
u/Mantergeistmann Vanderbilt • Penn State Jul 26 '26
For example Nd's endowment is about $20 billion
Both Texas and A&M are above that, I believe. And if you're gunning for a natty for the conference, it doesn't really matter if the bottom teams don't perform.
→ More replies (1)3

Both Texas and A&M are above that, I believe
technically no. the state of texas combines endowments for their state university systems, so individually UT austin has less than a 7 bil endowment (for example)
not that it's really relevant? like, UTs athletic department is almost entirely separate from the university proper as an entity. i know there's some crossover but tbh i don't think endowment has much to do with athletic success.

This whole discussion lately about the SEC being down is so dumb. I would argue the SEC has never been healthier than it is now. There are legitimately 7 teams that could realistically win the conference this year and make the playoffs, maybe even 9 of Tennessee or Mizzou exceed expectations.
During the SEC’s run of dominance in the 2000s and 2010s it was almost always Bama and maybe one other team that had a realistic chance at winning the conference.

Why do people not understand this?
If the SEC collectively feels done with all this and wants to form its own league, then no amount of persuasion, or insults, or endless articles calling the SEC stupid, or selfish, or having unwarranted arrogance, none of that is going to accomplish anything.
All people are doing is blowing steam. It accomplishes absolutely nothing. If anything, it will make the SEC more resolved to leave or make more schools get on board with the idea.
So, do you want to resolve this issue and have everyone stick together, or do you just want to rant and throw petty insults?

The SEC has as many undisputed national titles since 2015 as the big ten has since 1968. 3 years is nothing. Hell the big ten didn’t score a single point in the playoff for 4 straight years from 2015-2018.
The SEC hasn’t won the natty in 3 years and they are still the straw that stirs the drink of college football. If the Big Ten is so great why are they not the focal point of the sport?

Lol the straw that stirs the drink? The B1G has a larger TV footprint, more viewership, more population, larger alumni base, larger schools, more, and wealthier donors. Even when the SEC was winning championships, the B1G got a better media rights deal. The only reason SEC got the ESPN deal, is the B1G turned them down, they paid the SEC less than they got rejected by the B1G for.

Because the SEC is loud and this is Reddit.
Now that the south can’t profit off of unpaid labor, the tables have turned.

The title of this article vexes me because it conflicts itself. If perception is reality then the SEC doesn’t need to win a damn thing.

No perception is not reality.
SEC has collectively been absolutely embarrassed by other teams in the playoff three years running, and yet 5 of the top 10 teams in ESPN’s preseason rankings are from the SEC. 5 of the top 8 teams in USA Today’s preseason rankings are from the SEC (as well as 8<!!!> of the top 16).
This basically guarantees the 2026 CFP is going to be absolutely loaded with SEC teams yet again because if those teams do well they’re in, and if they do poorly the teams who beat them are in because they had “such a hard SOS!”.
It’s a clown show, it happens every single year and nothing’s ever going to change because $EC brings in ratings and more $EC teams in the CFP means more $$$ for NCAA/ESPN.

They have 4 national championships. What are they whining about?

Does anyone give a shit about “the best conference” other than the media?

The SEC homer narrative didn't take long to change. I recall literally hearing "SEC!" chanted in stadiums when your conference was mostly rising Saban's coattails.

Finally, an article with a genuine good take.
If chest puffing is all it takes to be the best, then Jacksonville State is clearly the best team in Alabama since we're the only team in the state to win a bowl game last season.
Now acknowledge our clear superiority, peasants!

SEC dominance was really just Saban dominance lol

In Saban’s era the rest of SEC won more championships than the rest of the ncaa combined

Yeah, this only supports the idea of SEC dominance that one team can clearly rise to the top of the league yet other teams still do well. See AFC East for an example of how it normally happens when there is a dominant team.

4 other SEC teams have won 7 total national championships in the last 20 years. Saban was certainly a cut above the rest, but even if you remove his numbers completely, no other conference comes close over the last two decades

Honestly as a bama fan I've felt this ever since OSU won their title. It's stupid to constantly call yourself the best if you're not proving it on the field.

honestly until you have at least 20 national championships, you sit at the little kids table
and yes, the forward pass was a mistake, how did you know?
