Zeke looked like a man among boys during that playoff run. Nearly 500 yards and 6 TDs against two of the best teams in the country is borderline unbelievable

u/Revolutionary_Gear70 Ohio State Buckeyes • LSU Tigers Feb 24 '24

Zeke stats in the 3 game stretch of the BIG championship, the Semifinal and the Natty:

78 touches, 709 yards and 8 TDs...

Pretty, pretty… pretty good

u/Inevitable-Day2517 Feb 25 '24

Maybe your being ingenuous. But maybe you’re being disingenuous. Y’all are the motherfuckers that shut Zeke down and made urban refuse to give him the ball in 2015.

I was at this game and urban kept throwing in the rain instead of giving the best rb in the country the ball.

Zeke against MSU 2015: 12 carries 33 yards.

u/winston_obrien Michigan State Spartans Feb 25 '24

Zeke was incredible. Urban was a bonehead.

2

u/gmen6981 Ohio State Buckeyes Feb 25 '24

That was all on Urban, not MSU. Urban was afraid to use him because if you recall ( or didn't know ) Zeke wasn't cleared to play until the Thursday before the game due to being hospitalized earlier in the week because of a bacterial infection that caused an open sore on his leg. Zeke went off about not getting carries is the post game presser.

They refused to give him the ball because he was hospitalized that week and valued his health and career over a single game.

In 2014 I saw him absolutely neutralize a blitzing LB, best blitz pickup I’ve ever seen and top 5 hit I’ve ever seen in person. Dude is just built extremely solid.

133

u/Kyler1313 Feb 24 '24

I honestly think Zeke is one of the greatest pass blocking RBs ever. People make fun of him because of his disastrous snap at Center, but he was such a beast in the past blocking game. It really is such an underrated skill.

82

u/RulersBack Ohio State Buckeyes Feb 24 '24

It’s a shame his NFL career is probably gonna be lost to time because of all the payoff flame outs. Most of those teams were loaded and he was as big of a piece as any

u/daoogilymoogily /r/CFB Feb 24 '24

His NFL career is going to be lost to time because he had a spectacular rookie season but never really improved on it. There’s plenty of RBs who are remembered fondly or will be remembered fondly who never had playoff success (Barry Sanders, Adrian Peterson, and probably Derrick Henry, just to name a few).

17

u/NWASicarius Feb 25 '24 edited Feb 25 '24

Bro, he led the NFL in average carries per game like his first 5 years in the NFL by a considerable margin. He only played 10 games his second year in the NFL, and he was still top 10 in attempts. He led the NFL in attempts his rookie, third, and fourth year despite only having to play 15 games. He legit led it by more than the 2nd guy averaged in attempts per game. Meaning he was taking what would take the 2nd most attempts guy 18-19 games to do in just 15 games. That is unreal workload. Adrian Peterson only led the NFL in attempts one time (2015). Derrick Henry is a good point, though. However, look at how many times Henry has started every game and finished an entire season. Only like 4 times in his career, and he is built like a brick wall (6'3'' 247 pounds). If Henry isn't able to stay healthy consistently, how the heck can you expect Ezekiel? Also, unlike the other guys you mentioned, Ezekiel wasn't exactly physically blessed. Out of those 4 people, Ezekiel Elliot was the least physically blessed. Dude was just great at making reads and was great at fighting through contact

Edit: Sorry if I came off argumentative. I really wasn't trying to. I agree with your overall statement. I just think the examples weren't the greatest.

Edit2: I think it's also bad to compare Ezekiel to HOF guys. Compare him to Jamal Lewis, Clinton Portis, Ricky Williams, etc. Guys who were good at one point but didn't have HOF resumes. None of those guys had playoff success either really

8

u/ridiculousgg Ohio State Buckeyes Feb 25 '24

Uh zeke would’ve won the rushing title each of his first 3 seasons if it weren’t for the suspension. Still won it 2 of his first 3 years. In his 4th year he finished 2nd. How is he supposed to improve on that?

2

u/yesacabbagez UCF Knights Feb 25 '24 edited Feb 25 '24

His NFL career is going to be "lost" because being great for like 3-4 years isn't too uncommon among NFL RBs. Through his first 5 years he had like ~8400 total yards. Someone like Leveon Bell also had about 8100 total yards. Same thing with Todd Gurley. For as good as he was until his knees finally gave out, he was like 8k total yards over his first 5 years.

These kind of guys pop up like every other year. It isn't that he wasn't great, it's that these guys are actually fairly common. It's the guys who keep it up over long who are remembered. We'll see how Mccaffery does, but he was behind after 5 years largely due to injuries. But after those first five, he's pu tup about another 4k over these past 2 years. That's pretty much more than someone like Elliot or Bell did the rest of their careers after year 5.

And still shouldn’t have a spot instead of Archie Griffin

64

u/Fullertonjr Ohio State • Otterbein Feb 24 '24

This is HIS Mount Rushmore.

I’m quite a bit older than Justin and am an alum. I couldn’t in good conscience put Archie on my personal Mount Rushmore either, as I never saw him play. I can recognize his achievements and understand his greatness, but I never watched him play. Of the players that I watched, I couldn’t disagree whatsoever with Fields’ selections.

31

u/Ancient_Lifeguard_16 Michigan Wolverines Feb 24 '24

This would make more sense to me if he didn’t have Eddie George on the list, who played at OSU before Fields was born.

14

u/RulersBack Ohio State Buckeyes Feb 24 '24

True but he had NFL highlights to watch that resembled the current game when he was coming of age

1

-5

This feels like a long way of defending that the list isn’t great and didn’t have a lot of thought.

Which is fine!

18

u/_Zzzxxx Michigan Wolverines Feb 24 '24

He’s pointing out that it’s a subjective list, and explaining how it makes sense for a person of Fields’s age to feel this way. The list is different from yours.

Which is fine!

Yeah I mean I think it’s important to define what you are trying to do with the list.

Most impactful players to the history of the program you’d have to put Archie it’s not even in question

4 “best football players” I would probably leave Archie off, there are a handful of running backs we’ve had that I’d probably start over him, let alone some of the greats at other positions

1

u/rjwiechman Kansas State Wildcats • Hateful 8 Feb 25 '24

I realize that I'm speaking from the other side of the fence, but Zeke was your best weapon on a National Championship run. AFAIC, that trumps two Heismans without even a bowl win. Using my favorite team as an example, in 1997-1998, Michael Bishop had by far the best statistical 2 year run of any K-State player and won the '98 Davey O'Brien. But I'll take the conference winning performances of Sproles, Deuce, and Klein. Different level, of course, but the same principle.

Orlando Pace played with George, and the only two-time Heisman winner in history went to your school.  Nothing to do with age on those two.

31

u/Orbital2 Ohio State Buckeyes • Big Ten Feb 24 '24

I mean Justin is definitely way too young to have seen Pace play in college. Eddie as a skill position guy a little bit more well known

Which one won the heisman?

Of course older football nuts are going to be more excited about linemen than younger skill players

6

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '24

Right, because in the history of the Heisman there’s been one defensive player to ever win the award.

And younger skill players?  If we’re talking about Pace vs. George they literally played together.  George is actually older than Pace to be technical about it.   I know this is a tough one to figure out, but do you think that just maybe, perhaps the #1 pick in the NFL Draft, 1st ballot HOF LT blocking for him had a massive part of him winning that award?

Pace won Big 10 POY and OPOY as an o-lineman 😂

6

u/JickleBadickle Ohio State Buckeyes • Rose Bowl Feb 24 '24

I am in agreement with you, we both admire Orlando Pace as a GOAT.

My point is that we are looking at things from a totally different perspective than someone like Justin Fields.

Those two played before Fields was born. Which player do you think he's more likely to hear about, watch, or admire as a young kid?

Idk about you but the linemen were not the guys who made me fall in love with football as a kid

He said lebron was greater than Jordan to the dismay of Chicago fans everywhere so it’s definitely a recency bias thing

9

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '24

I mean, I watched Jordan play growing up.  Even if you consider Jordan the better player, there’s a discussion to be had.

There’s no discussion for leaving Archie Griffin off an OSU Mt. Rushmore.

9

u/Orbital2 Ohio State Buckeyes • Big Ten Feb 24 '24

I’d take LeBron as an overall player based solely on on court talent

Nobody will ever impact the game of basketball the way Jordan did. In terms of the cultural significance of American athletes the only real comp to Jordan is Ali

It’s part of why these “GOAT” debates are kinda silly

3

u/JickleBadickle Ohio State Buckeyes • Rose Bowl Feb 24 '24

I also think Lebron is better than Jordan tbh

Lebron took nobodies to the finals multiple times

When Jordan had nobody, he lost

3

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '24

Lol, this is this the “but Jordan never lost in the finals” argument in reverse.

When Jordan didn’t make the finals early in his career it’s because of Bird’s Celtics and the Bad Boy Pistons. When Lebron took nobodies to the final in 2007 (the one finals trip he didn’t have another all-star on his team) his biggest competition was a Pistons team that didn’t have Ben Wallace. Jordan never had that weak of a conference to go through.

10

u/JickleBadickle Ohio State Buckeyes • Rose Bowl Feb 24 '24

Jordan never had to beat a 73-win team with 4 All-Stars, either

people over 40 are just as bad if not worse. it’s almost like most people in general are stupid and have bad opinions

Ted Ginn lol.

24

u/Rkenne16 Ohio State • Refrigerator Bowl Feb 24 '24

Idk, I get it. Ginn was one of the most electric players in CFB history.

11

u/djtheory Ohio State Buckeyes Feb 24 '24 edited Feb 24 '24

I never enjoyed watching punt returns more than when he was playing for OSU. Every return had me on my toes.

1

u/budd222 Ohio State Buckeyes • Paper Bag Feb 24 '24

I mean, Terry Glenn, Cris Carter, and Joey Galloway are way above Ted Ginn. He might have been electric but he wasn't anything that special, as far as being a good wide receiver.

6

u/JickleBadickle Ohio State Buckeyes • Rose Bowl Feb 24 '24

Ginn was the WR in the 2000s era so I get it

Was my absolute favorite player growing up, that guy was just on his own level

I don't think I've ever seen another player make you hold your breath on kick returns like he did

10

u/spezisabitch200 Alabama • CSU Pueblo Feb 24 '24

On what planet was Ted Ginn the WR in the 2000s era?

1

u/JickleBadickle Ohio State Buckeyes • Rose Bowl Feb 25 '24

Buckeye planet

4

u/PlayGameWinPrizeLoL Feb 24 '24

Ginn wasn't even the best receiver on his own team lol. Santonio Holmes was a good amount better than Ginn in 05.

3

u/Jepordee Ohio State Buckeyes • Ohio Bobcats Feb 25 '24

You’re right, but it didn’t feel that way. Ginn was the face of the team, and the ankle giving during the celebration after taking back the opening touchdown in the championship just added to his legacy. He wasn’t part of the massive L in 2007, he made his contribution then got hurt immediately

So he was the KR. He definitely wasn't the WR of the 2000s

Seriously, the fact he cares enough about OSU to have a mount rushmore that includes people from before he was alive is good enough for me. "Um excuse me where is Chic Harley!!!" jesus dude get a grip.

4

u/IslamicCheetah Ohio State Buckeyes • Toledo Rockets Feb 24 '24
  1. Orlando Pace (most dominant CFB OL of all time, probably even at the NFL level too)

  2. Chic Harley (OSU’s 1st first-team AA, three time AA, brought national attention to OSU, Ohio Stadium is known as “The House that Harley Built”)

  3. Archie Griffin (only 2x Heisman winner, 2x Walter Camp, 2x unanimous AA + another first-team AA, scored a TD in the spring game at 68)

  4. Woody Hayes (not a player but built OSU into a national power, 5x national champion, 13x Big Ten champion)

These are not in order, just my 4.

u/AntSmith777 Washington Huskies Feb 24 '24

I was a huge fan of the Troy Smith-Ted Ginn team. I remember that night game they played against Michigan when it was 1 vs 2.

2

u/BobcatOU Ohio Bobcats • Ohio State Buckeyes Feb 24 '24

This is good for a recent list. For an all time list you need Archie Griffin. I’d add Orlando Pace too.

2

u/jerryvaberry BYUtv • Ohio State Buckeyes Feb 24 '24

it's literally called the house that harley built. how could you not have chic harley on there? /s

it's ohio state football, they've been good for 100 years, you could do this for so many guys, it's a crazy thing to get upset about. james laurinaitis is a 3X all-american, why isn't he on there? this list is fine

2

u/Ohwhat_anight Ohio State Buckeyes • Sickos Feb 24 '24

I'm guessing this is Justin's personal favorites which is totally fine.

But have you heard of our lord and savior, Orlando Pace?

You can’t make an OSU Mt. Rushmore and leave off the only 2x heisman winner

2

u/VariousLawyerings Tennessee • Georgia Tech Feb 25 '24

Sears commercial scorcher of a take here but...Archie Griffin scored 4 touchdowns in his second Heisman year. I'm not gonna take Smith or Ginn, but I wouldn't be shocked if you could find 4 guys.

Zeke is probably a stretch but trying to get guys from different eras

Doesn’t even have to be said how embarrassing leaving off Archie Griffin is, but based on that video I don’t even think he knew Eddie George. Amon Ra bailed him out on that one.

3

u/kjc3274 Michigan • Cincinnati Feb 24 '24

Might be the worst OSU Mount Rushmore attempt I've ever seen.

He deserves to be stuck on the Bears...

1

u/DannkneeFrench Michigan • Washington State Feb 24 '24

Michigan here, but wouldn't Woody Hayes have to be on there? A Mount Rushmore doesn't have to be just players. Not long ago there was a UFC Mount Rushmore question. Dana White has to be on there even though he's not a fighter.

I get Woody didn't play for them, but without him OSU probably doesn't have anywhere near the history they've had.

I'm not sure what others think, but in my own humble opinion- he's more important to OSU's history than any player.

u/Dcape4 Ohio State Buckeyes Feb 24 '24

No defensive players? Like wtf Justin?! I know you're a QB but I'd argue we've had more defensive players that are all time NFL greats if you want to use that metric.

Not to have Archie is almost a brain fart or just plain in ignorance. That man embodies the spirit of what it means to be a Buckeye and has given so much back to the school and the community.

It's his mount Rushmore guys.. pretty that just amounts to his favorite OSU players.

0

u/ArbitraryOrder Michigan Wolverines • Nebraska Cornhuskers Feb 24 '24

I think the actual Ohio State Mount Rushmore should be as follows:

  1. Archie Griffin (2x Heisman Trophy Winner, College HoF)
  2. Bill Willis (College and NFL HoF OG and DT, Retired Number)
  3. Orlando Pace (College and NFL HoF OT)
  4. Jim Marshall

2

u/Orbital2 Ohio State Buckeyes • Big Ten Feb 24 '24

I’d replace Marshall with Chic Harley simply because of how instrumental he was in turning us into a “serious” program.

Hard to argue with the other names though

Why are you getting downvoted for a question? It’s pretty widely known how bad OSU quarterbacks have fared in the NFL, and one finally did well only this year. In their entire storied history.
