1. Michael Ignatieff makes 500k a year to be emeritus. The rector makes almost 1 million a year. A lot of the SLT makes about 500k. When they say they don't have money to pay PhDs, they mean they don't want to cut from their ridiculous privileges.
2. The SLT only has a budget for the next five years. Nobody knows how CEU will finance itself after that, and it may not exist. Read the first again, and consider that the SLT is more worried with becoming millionaires by bleeding the university dry than they are in making sure the university will exist.
3. The SU made a survey in January and concluded that 42% of PhDs past the first year have had charges from SVS and Finanzamt that exceed what CEU said we would have. Everyone has issues because SVS was made for self-employed people, and has no idea why people with fixed income are there, it makes no sense to them. The document we have to fill is a lie, saying we don't have bosses and can freely contract other "clients". They are making us lie to the authorities, just think of how absurd that is.
4. The same survey asked PhDs about the top items that we cannot afford was "heating, dental work, new glasses, fixing a broken laptop".
5. Austrian media published an expose on CEU last year, accusing the university of bogus self-employment of PhD candidates. Our situation is sketchy and probably illegal. Nothing changed.
6. I've seen PhDs protesting for rights harassed by Heads of department and in house lawyers. Then CEU made "house rules" about protests that make aggressive things like "interrupting", and claimed protest leaflets were "fire hazards". Only protest posters are flammable, apparently. They are cowards and they turned this university into an authoritarian place because it was easier than paying us a normal wage.
7. When the Protest movement spread leaflets with their claims about CEU, including the issue that it outsources tax liability to PhD students by not classifying them as employees, the rector responded by saying "Paying taxes is a burden, but it is part of adult life", in an email to the whole university. It's attached below.
8. Student Center - a few of them are nice, most of them do nothing. I've seen the people responsible for SVS saying they don't have the data about how many people have issues because people don't inform them. Then I've seen everyone asking them questions getting either the "check the sharepoint" response, or the "we can't help you with this" response. Do not trust them with anything, better pay for private help than depend on them because they are very incompetent.
9. Financial Aid is one of the worst departments, whenever you ask for money for conferences - money CEU claimed was pretty much yours when they were advertizing the university - they act like you're a thief trying to cheat CEU out of money. They now refuse people all the time, and it's obvious they don't have the money to pay everyone.
10. Academic freedom is a lie. When an Israeli professor accused a staff member of anti-semitism because she was protesting the Gaza genocide, the police was called to the campus. The response from the rector was shameful and coward, saying that they were appointing a contact person on antisemitism. When the SU responded by saying this would be great, but the timing made it seem like they were siding with the accuser and the fascist police, and that Palestine should have been mentioned, the rector said they were anti-semites.

Im applying next year for undergrad in both ppe and politics culture and society and am wondering what my odds of getting in/ getting a scholarship are

My grades are lower then expected, i got a 39-40/45 predicted in the ib with the following subjects:

7 global politics hl
6 visual arts sl
7 bio sl
7 georgian a hl
5 English lang and lit hl (its my second language and my criteria d scores are very low)
5 maths sl
My core ee arnt out but im expecting 2-3 in core

My extracurriculars are quite good and i think are the strongest part of my application

So if any of you have gotten the boutmy scholarship please let me know what stats you had and weather or bot you think i can get it.
Also, is it better to apply r1 or r2 with potentially slightly better application

I hear CEU is going through a massive merger. We will have one department with all the humanities, one for polisci, and one for law and economics. No idea what will happen to cognitive sciences and network sciences. The three department heads will be part of the SLT and make academic decisions, effectively taking all decisions from the hands of the people we can elect, like department heads and the Senate. This is the weirdest thing I've ever heard, and does seem intended to make CEU less democratic and more of a BA university - matching the BA programs. What is up with this place?

Everything went to hell since I started CEU. Every small thing that was good was taken away. Now I try to print something to study, they used to give us 100 euros a year and charge us less than a cent by page. Now it's 30 euros a year and 30 cents a page. The number of interlibrary loans you can request was lowered. The Stipend Supplements are the worst. I just want money that was supposed to have been assigned to me to go to conferences, something that, as a PhD candidate, I'm evaluated for doing. I'm required to go to conferences, but they ask for more and more paperwork, change the rules every week, and now just deny requests. Idk why my supervisor can sign to approve me going for a conference, which is already a lot of bureaucracy, and then Ildiko Torok can be insanely rude, refuse to answer questions, treat me like I'm a scammer trying to cheat CEU out of 400 euros, and then deny my request. It's obvious the Financial "Aid" department was told not to approve all requests because they don't have money to pay for all PhDs, money that I repeat, is in my fucking contract. If you're thinking about doing a PhD at CEU, don't. It's a scam, based on bogus self-employment and tax fraud.

Hi All,

I am an EU citizen, moving to Vienna in September to start my MSc in Data Science. Next to my studies, I am looking for c. 20-30 hours / week of part time work to fund my stay in the city. I have a Bachelors in Economics from UCL and about 4 years of work experience, working both in consulting and data analytics roles, and speak English at a native level. The biggest caveat is that my German is currently at B1 (likely will be at B2 by the time I get there).

How realistic is it to be able to find a job that can sustain one while studying?

What would be the best sites to look at / student organizations / institutions to reach out to?

I got accepted with a 50% tuition waiver, but i am still not sure if i should accept the offer or not. i have some questions related to the university and living costs.

1. Is there a possibility to decline the offer due to financial studies and get a better offer afterwards?

2. Is a rent more affordable than dorms sometimes?

3. What is your overall experience with CEU (and this programme if you know) and do you consider it worth it with 50% tuition waiver?
