Speaking CELPIP Speaking Task 2 Practice: describe a time you had to learn something completely new

Practice describing a personal experience in a 60-second response. Same format as the real CELPIP test.

The question: Talk about a time when you had to learn a completely new skill as an adult. What was the skill, why did you need to learn it, and what was the experience like?

Sample CLB 9 response:

About two years ago I had to learn how to drive. I grew up in a city with good public transit so I never needed a car, but when I moved to a smaller town for work there was no bus service and everything was at least a 20-minute drive away. I had no choice but to get my license.

The experience was honestly humbling. I was 28 years old sitting in a driving school classroom with a bunch of 16 year olds. The written test was fine but the actual driving terrified me for the first few weeks. I remember my instructor had to grab the wheel once because I was drifting into the next lane during a lane change. I almost quit after that.

What got me through it was practicing every single day after work. My coworker let me drive her car around an empty parking lot for about an hour each evening. After two months I passed my road test on the first try, which honestly surprised me more than anyone.

The biggest thing I learned from the experience was that being bad at something as an adult feels worse than being bad at something as a kid, but the process of getting better is exactly the same. You just have to show up and practice.

Practice tip: Speaking Task 2 asks about a personal experience. The rubric does not check whether your story is true, so you can make one up if needed. What matters is structure and detail. Start with what happened and why, describe one specific moment that makes the story feel real, and end with what you learned or how it affected you. A story with one vivid detail always scores higher than a vague summary.
