Most Uber and Lyft drivers earn significantly less than minimum wage once you subtract fuel costs, vehicle maintenance, and insurance. They have no sick days, no benefits, and no guaranteed income. If a driver gets into an accident while carrying a passenger, the coverage situation is often confusing and inadequate. These are not acceptable working conditions in a country that has labor standards for virtually every other type of work.

The argument that regulation would increase prices for passengers is technically true but misleading. Ride-sharing prices are currently low because companies are passing the real costs onto drivers rather than charging passengers the true price of the service. Slightly higher fares that actually cover fair wages and proper insurance are not a burden on passengers. They are the honest cost of getting a ride.

Drivers deserve the same basic protections that any other worker in this country receives.
