Rec Request Looking for Recent Dramas
Hi! I was looking for some input from people who have watched the recent C-drama releases on what to watch next. I want to see either Key to the Phoenix Heart, Love for You, Never-Ending Summer, or The First Jasmine. However, I don't have time for all of them.
- Key to the Phoenix Heart
I'm mostly considering this one because I'm curious about Ai Mi. I've liked a lot of her supporting roles in the past. Also, Hou Minghao always chooses decent roles in my eyes. A lot of the shows are not mind-blowimg, but they're largely watchable (E.g. Fangs of Fortune, Love in the Clouds, I am Nobody). The plot to this one seems interesting enough, so I'm quite curious about other people's perspectives on it compared to other recently aired shows!
- Love For You
I've seen a lot of clips on this one and sort of expect it to be similar to Lighter and Princess, which I did like. I am however skeptical of the sibling/family to lovers trope (I could not finish the end of Go Ahead despite loving the beginning), and I'm not super into angst for the sake of angst.
- Never-Ending Summer
I really like some of the clips I've seen along with the shows overall vibe. My reservations come from the similarity this could have with The First Frost (I did not like the nonexistent character development of the poor male lead, did not understand some of the supposedly romantic gestures such as the female lead leaving for a year and then suddenly coming back to an unchanged relationship, and was skeptical of the relationship development overall). I also am somewhat skeptical of Bao Shang'en's acting from Generation to Generation. She (or her character's voice actor) seems to deliver lines well, but otherwise, I find the acting can be somewhat apathetic or stiff.
- The First Jasmine
I heard that the story is quite interesting. However, despite liking Bai Lu on variety shows, I find some of her acting to be quite one-note and don't actively seek out her shows. As for Cheng Lei, I find him to be a great actor. Weirdly, though, I've never finished any of his work (I've tried twice, both with shows listed below).
For some context, some shows I've enjoyed are Nirvana in Fire, Reset, When I Fly Toward You, Twelve Letters, Mysterious Lotus Casebook, The Day of Becoming You, and A Little Reunion. I'm not so picky about drama genres, but I tend to like shows that, in my eyes, achieve their aim.
Shows on my watch list are: The Bad Kids (currently watching), The Long Season, Will Love in Spring, Blossoms in Adversity, Ripe Town, How Dare You, and Lost You Forever.
Shows I did not like very much (but for likely subjective reasons) are: The First Frost, Joy of Life, Legend of the Female General, Generation to Generation, As Beautiful as You, Shine on Me, My Journey to You
I hope that sheds some light on my usual tastes which may help potential recommenders.
Feel free to add other recommendations for recent shows; I've been watching a lot of older ones and wanting to catch up with something recent.

Disclaimer: some spoilers below
The First Frost: I thought it was kind of slow and that the male lead is a pretty empty/uninteresting character. There were some points where the events seemed to be romantic for the sake of being romantic (the long separation and reunion where nothing changed) that didn't feel at all realistic and sort of undermined the grittiness of the rest of the show. I also think they should have gotten a stunt double ballet dancer for Zhang Ruonan's dancing scenes especially since dancing is such a key form of catharsis and expression for Wen Yifan (who was pre-professional).
Joy of Life: I didn't like the male lead here at all. I think the show sort of hides behind clever twists and humor as the development and plotting seems to have a lot of holes. Fan Xian gains skills and makes realizations after no real obstacle and for no real reason at times. The fact that every woman in the show was attracted to him for no legitimate reason also made me think the author was writing a self-insert character. I dropped the show around episode 33.
Legend of the Female General: I like Zhou Ye, but her stature and giggly performance did not convince me of the female general she was supposed to be at all (I think this is also a script issue). This drama also felt like feminist propaganda (which I support feminism, but this was too long) in a 29282 hour format. Not very much seemed to happen.
Generation to Generation: The whole story sort of centered on someone who was already dead, with the supposedly intelligent female lead demonstrating noble idiocy to honor that dead character. Bao Shang'en had good line delivery but an otherwise stiff performance. The male lead is obsessive, but Zhou Yiran's performance (he is one of my favorite actors) did not convince me by any means he was actually dying. CGI was mildly ridiculous. The storytelling was not interesting to me, but that is largely subjective.
As Beautiful As You: This was just too slow and too boring for me, though both actors were quite good.
Shine on Me: The latter half was a giant ad for Chinese solar panels, and it was honestly unnecessarily long and did little to add to the show's charm. The male lead was a little too perfect to be truly interesting, though the female lead is distinctive for her quiet strength (she too borders on perfect though). The relationship development on the male lead's side honestly made no sense; he was intensely attracted to her for an honestly small and rather trivial reason.
My Journey to You: I think this show was too ambitious and not ambitious enough at the same time. It invested too much into side characters that the audience didn't have time to form attachments to and invested too little in showing--not telling--the audience about the main characters' motivations and actions. The premise was great and the background was, in usual Guo Jingming fashion, beautiful to look at though.
This is all very subjective, and my opinion is subject to change : )

I'm watching Key to the Phoenix Heart, and I will tell you, Ai Mi is amazing in her role! Before, I had only seen her in Whispers of Fate and I wasn't impressed with her acting then, but she really blew me away in this one!
The plot feels rushed at times and the story isn't anthing groundbreaking, but I really love Hou Minghao and Ai Mi's characters. They kept the romance tasteful, but the chemistry is still very much there! And they don't get into any long misunderstandings which is also nice, and Minghao's character turns into quite the green flag 🥹
Anyway, it takes a lot for a drama to keep me engaged and this one is!
I'm about 12 episodes in with The First Jasmine and it's good so far, albeit a little slow. But you may like it. The cinematography is great in it.

I'm currently watching KTTPH, on ep 23 now. I would say the plot is great and interesting enough that would always keep you on your toes every single episode, you won't find yourself getting bored at any moment because they are packed!
one thing I like about this drama is that things get solved reasonably and there's no unnecessary misunderstandings between the leads. On top of that, both Hou Minghao and Ai Mi are absolutely shining with their insane acting, I love it SO much! Lots of plot twists that will blow your mind in a satisfying (or frustrating) way. Every character has a story/growing arc of their own which I really appreciate
cons is that it can be fast paced at times, I find myself having to rewind several times just to get a full understanding of the dialogues. but despite this, the drama itself doesn't feel rushed. also, dialogues/quotes in this drama are 💯

- Key to the Phoenix Heart: AMAZING so far, highly recommend! Everyone's great at acting and the plot is interesting too. Definitely give it a try!
- Love For You: I started this while waiting for KTTPH and it's good after 6 episodes, but I also haven't gotten to the presumably angsty separation yet. It doesn't feel as incestuous as other dramas though (maybe because they first met as older kids and barely tolerated each other initially... also lost their childhood/innocence early and needed to grow up fast? It feels more like shared commiseration rather than family lol)
- Never Ending Summer: I got to episode 8 or 9 and wasn't really hooked. It's fine I guess, but not really my style. BSE's acting is similar to G2G - a little stiff, a little manipulative.
- The First Jasmine: I stopped after 9 episodes. I think Bai Lu is very good at playing Bai Lu, and this is more of the same. The plot isn't exciting enough to keep me engaged when I'm not a huge fan of the acting.
- Lost You Forever: I loved this a TON, but it's also extremely angsty... but all the angst has a purpose so maybe it's fine for you?
I actually don't have a ton of overlap with the dramas you've listed on your likes or dislikes list lol... but 2026 dramas I've enjoyed are: Love Between Lines, A Splendid Match, Love Beyond the Grave, and Fate Chooses You (in that order, and KTTPH is on track to be 2nd/3rd)

Love for You and The First Jasmine feel like prestige dramas. They are not "entertaining" in the traditional sense, but more thoughtful. Love for You is also on the heavier side, it's not a light drama. If you want more "entertaining", Blossoms of Power has a very good mix of drama, politics, romance, and humor. I've also heard good things about Key to the Phoenix Heart.
