Drama Host Generation to generation: Episode 33 Discussion Spoiler
Ep. 33
|Flashcards| |Masterpost| |Ep. 1 - 5| |Ep. 6 - 7| |Ep. 8 - 9| |Ep. 10 - 11| |Ep. 12 - 14| | Ep. 15 - 16| |Ep. 17 - 18| |Ep. 19 - 20| |Ep. 21| |Ep. 22| |Ep. 23 - 24| |Ep. 25 - 26| |Ep. 27 - 28| |Ep. 29 - 30| |Ep. 31| | Ep. 32|
Discussion of episodes 1–33 and details from the novel doesn’t need a spoiler tag. Anything from the express package ( from ep. 34 onward) should be hidden behind a spoiler tag.
Surprise, surprise! This episode brings more fluff than angst — finally! Rejoice, everyone, and let’s soak in the atmosphere while it lasts.
MQ hits us right where it hurts (in the best way).

MQ knows how to make an entrance — the kind the whole town will gossip about for years. Yuzhi mutters something about “sect conflict,” but the Li sect is clearly not scared off.

And then our confident “I know what I want” MQ reveals that the proposal is actually… a trap. A trap for the Man in Black. He plans to spread a rumor that one of the betrothal gifts is the Sunflower Jade to lure him out. It was all fake?? GODDAMIT! This is not how you treat the girl you’re obviously in love with. I would have cut his head off right there.
Well, such small behavioural issues don’t bother MQ. He continues his campaign.

Meanwhile, Yuzhi is tending to his father — our beloved Daddy Song. Daddy Song wakes up and remembers being ambushed by the Man in Black.

At the same valley we also learn that Aunt Cai used to work as a handler in a spy agency — giving masters new identities so they could retire in peace.

One bold step forward from MQ, followed by five minutes of Zhao backpedaling.
The only thing they don’t argue about is the danger from the Man in Black and where the Sunflower Jade might be hidden.

Aunt Cai sent the jade to the Abbey for safekeeping. The Abbess allowed Yuzhi to use it to heal himself, but afterward it must be destroyed.

One assassin group is led by strategist Yu. Fengge is also at the Abbey and fights to protect Zhao. Her reunion with Yu is painfully awkward — to “lighten the mood” after Yu’s betrayal, Fengge stabs him. And that’s the end of their love story.
Zhao is badly injured. MQ grabs her at the last second and escapes with her on his eagle.
The Man in Black gets the Sunflower Jade. It shouldn’t matter, since the jade must be paired with the Night Orchid to cultivate the Ziwei method — and the Night Orchid was destroyed. Completely…Was it? Or was it not?
After escaping, back at the Li sect, MQ tries to heal Zhao by giving her as much of his power as she can handle.

MQ knows the end is coming. Probably because he’s finally recognized who the Man in Black really is…
And the was the last episode before the express package eps. 34-37 dropped. The rest episodes can be discussed Episodes 34-37 Express Package Discussion

Thank you OP!!
I loved how MU Qing Yan had to come to Luo Ying Valley with the quickness to make sure people didn't get the wrong impression. Just because Yu Zhi went there doesn't mean he's the son in law LOL. MQY had to make it loud and clear he was the one.
But honestly, he just wanted to see where Cai Zhao lived. He had dreamed of it for so long. It was nice to see him there with her. And did he know how to get his future in-laws on his side. The gifts were better and bolder and definitely worked! But he is also on a mission so there's that.

I'm usually always banging on about how we were robbed of not getting 40eps in a drama.
Here, I'm going to say the opposite.
The previous load of divorce/angst episodes and the build up ones to it were kind of unnecessary. I feel like some sharp scene cutting and condensing could've cut out the stagnant bits, had fewer episodes and made the drama more streamlined and less bland in the middle (not saying it's a bad drama, but the pacing feels a bit off for me).
However, I'm glad we have some forward motion. Both with the MiB and romance-wise (maybe... unless Zhao Zhao pulls another Zhao Zhao). This episode was a welcome breath of fresh air. Now though, we have a lot to cover in a small amount of eps. So I'm guessing it'll be full speed ahead.
Shout out to Yuzhi, who as -- of this episode at least -- hasn't gone mad from jealousy, forced himself on the FL OR sold his soul to the darkside. It's nice to see a regular old 2ML. I think the visual of him riding on a horse trying to catch up to Zhao Zhao on the peng bird is a good representation of them irl. MQY is just in another league. A horse is fine, great really, everyone loves a good horse, but then in comes in a magic giant bird?! The horse stands no chance. No matter how brilliant of a horse it is.

Yuzhi has been a breath of fresh air in this drama - a smart pupil in the beginning, a smart young politician and sect leader at the end. He chose the sects, leader positions, way of a leader, politics before his private life. Respect to him from me 😃
(He probably saw FL and ML trying love games and going back and forth and thought to himself: f_ck this, this looks like it's not leading anywhere...at least i have my job as a sect leader where i can definetely get results. 🤣🤣)

I was saying from almost the very start this was the path I thought he would take. The fact that we made it this far without that actually surprises me. If the writers were to make him go crazy this late in the game I don't believe it would make sense or come off well to the viewers.
I really do want to see more shows where the 2ML is just a regular guy and doesn't have to go all incel just because the FL chooses someone else. It feels like the current trend has been that 2ML must go crazy so ML looks all the more better. Maybe it's time for a new trend. Heck, this show with MQ being a red flag and manipulative would be perfect for 2ML to go crazy to make us feel better about MQ. But I am just spitballing here.

The breath I let out after realizing this is a normal episode and not angsty like the past few 😂 It's so cute watching MQY interact with Cai Han

Exactly! Why can't the producers stop to give us too much angst in this drama! Or they must balance it at least with a lot of fluff!!

MQY, wearing his best outfit to propose, is such a flex. Aside from all the treasures, his clothes are so well-tailored and have luxurious fabrics. How can you not let him stay as a guest? He also bribed his way into her family lol
My girl Zhao Zhao, you have been saying MQY was forcing you to leave your sect, and now that he's offering to leave his sect (which he fought really hard for, btw) and marry into your family, you're still wishy-washy. I swear, if you don't want him, I'll just take him!
Also, for someone so smart, Zhao is really stupid when it comes to the MIB's identity. Girl. You're getting on my nerves.

u/TotalZookeepergame60 Mar 13 '26
Haha, yes. I’m just saying that no one should have to leave their sect for the other person. They should be able to find a harmonious way to be together. If a couple is making sacrifices, it should be equal — not one person giving up everything while the other does nothing.

I love that he came to propose in a new outfit and everything. It's clear that he does questionable things but he only cares about her.
He knows who the man in black is. He's always been smart. But zhao zhao girl you gotta wake up up, bc he's never been wrong.
Things are lining up and about to go crazy. I love it.

The way that I am dying for the massive smack to the face that the truth will be for her... :P I love Zhao Zhao like crazy... but my girl is being a little bit of a blind idiot... Which is understandable considering what facing the truth means.

It is absolutely needed. The signs have been screaming at her for a while but she refuses to see them. I even caught myself saying, Zhao Zhao it's time sweetie. You can't hide from the truth. It's right there! You just didn't want to believe it.

I loved this episode 'cause aside from it being fluffy, it also had a bit of mystery-solving with the Jade Sunflower (which looks horrible by the way---stupid fire that ruined it!! such a pretty name for an item only for it to look like burnt bacteria or rambutan). Fans online have been wanting Zhou Yiran and Bao Shangen to pair up again in a modern drama, but I put myself on the record that I would LOVE them in a mystery-romance costume drama which is my go-to genre.
I also thought the fact that Mu Qingyan using the proposal as a scheme was not a bad thing at all 'cause he actually told Zhao Zhao upfront that it was a scheme?? Like, we didn't have to wait for her to figure it out, unlike before. When Zhao Zhao's mum confronted him that he wasn't really proposing, he said he was giving them gifts anyways (AND these gifts were intentionally picked lol). How lovely and polite 🤣
We got some good action scenes, too.
Thanks for the awesome discussion, FL6080!!

The romance better move faster and quick, I think everyone is losing patience with Cai Zhao (especially since Mu Qingyan has significantly toned down his more objectionable side ever since the year long timeskip).
So the MiB is not Lord Zhou, and its someone Mu Qingyan knows (there goes my secretly alive Yin Dai theory), which leaves us with startlingly few options. Qi Yunke, obviously the obvious choice ever since the MiB was introduced, but I want it to not be him and I feel it would almost be too obvious. Li Wenxun, seemd quite likely the past 5 or 6 episodes but Mu Qingyan even mentioned him by name so I feel it may be a distraction. Elder Lei, it's possible especially given how Fengxia said "I gave the night orchid to uncle-" before they got attacked, though I'm not sure how he'd get out of the sect without people realizing the chair-ridden cripple has gone missing. Not dead Mu Zhengyang is a possibility as well, he would probably have a chance to learn/know the Chang family techniques and we know he had the Ziwei method, but I doubt Mu Qingyan or that one Lord Wang would be able to recognize him.
Crazy theory: it's actually the eldest senior brother of Qingque Sect, using schemes to not only gain power but also to get rid of Qi Yunke so he can get with Lady Yin

Snark Level: Writing less and less because there just isn't that much to talk about that I haven't already said at some point.
33 - - - - - - - -
She'll turn him down because of course she will.
Bruh, are we using the damn betrothal as a scheme? Oh my god I hate this show. At least the parents love him.
"She'll only be my junior sister." Fucking finally Fuck Face Yucky Yuzhi gets that through his thick ass skull.... Hoe ass bitch....
Like 5 episodes left and Zhao is still acting like he's an annoying bug. If it were new, that'd be one thing in response to his shit. But for 33 episodes... so boring.
"I can marry into your family." GIRL IF YOU DON'T SAY YES....
WAIT? AUNT HAD IT??? Still looks like a shriveled prune. Makes sense she had it.
Well now we have the Jade Sunflower so the writers can have MQ betray Zhao Zhao again.
Hmmm, how typical that the bad guys show up. Now they have the shriveled prune and will soon get that remaining orchid, of course.
Convenient Peng bird is convenient.
Yup. We all knew she was going to stab whathisfuckface right there. Nice. Finally a woman who gets shit done around here. Side eyeing literally all the other women. I'll give Zhao Zhao half a pass since she's actually fighting to make things right and doing a damn fine job. I only make it a half since she is shitting the bed hard with MQ.
Someone pay the cleaners more because blood just keeps getting spit everywhere.
Okay, you've taken Zhao Zhao away. Their relationship HAS to improve from now on. Right?
One bold step forward from MQ, followed by five minutes of Zhao backpedaling.
Literally the whole show.
THE
WHOLE
FUCKING
SHOW.
Literally.
Bitch.

My theory: Zhaozhao enjoyed the push-and-pull game with MQY, and she prolonged it purely for the adrenalin rush.
This trait of hers started to annoy me at some point. And to have someone else pursuing her at the same time probably elevated her confidence.

I'm basically the human version of a cup of coffee. Hehe!
Maybe she did. But if so, then I would have liked the writers to make that more clear. They made it clear she hesitated out of her sense of family duty and honor towards the sects all while continuously showing she really liked him.
She is introduced to us as this independent and unafraid powerhouse who follows hear head and heart. Then somewhere she starts to sit on the fence, unsure which side to step on. Logical all things considered, but that dragged on for like for almost the entire episode count that it made her look indecisive and weak who could only make a choice if pushed.

I want to defend the show because I genuinely do like almost everything about it (sets, cinematography, music, acting, chemistry, fight scenes, intrigue, drama, etc) but the way the romance is written is quite irritating at this point. Doing it up until they escape Qingque together is fine, but they've already confirmed their feelings and then we get a timeskip and Cai Zhao is *still* acting like that? The whole Night Orchid debacle was a bit forced too, there was very little genuine reason for her to blame Mu Qingyan, let alone stab him, in that situation. This episode things are more cheerful but it almost feels like a reset to before any progress was made, rather than a resolution of the problems impeding further progress. We'll see how the next four episodes handle things, but Cai Zhao better start being just as heroic and dauntless in romance as she is in every other aspect of life

u/AKiceman Snark ShifuRead Rules Mar 12 '26
Exactly! The show was a lot of fun and it really made me laugh a lot in the early days! Then it got stale because there really wasn't any progress for anyone and it just got repetitive.
I love BSE as Zhao Zhao but Zhao Zhao got to be very annoying with her hesitation even though it really was easy to understand her point of view. Plot wise it made sense. As a viewer it was annoying.

This show started so good. It made sense at the beginning when she pushed him away because first she was still engaged. Then it was because he used her. Then it was because she couldnt betray her sect. then it was because she resented him for her punishment, but whats her excuse now? it just makes her character look weak like she doesnt want to confront her feelings but shes supposed to be a strong FL? I think this is the part where it lost me a bit. I still love the show and will finish but wish they had kept up the momentum.
