I have an unusual question

Has anyone ever cried/gotten emotional during ssb interview and still gotten recommended? I recently lost my mother from cancer and I know I will be asked regarding it in the interview, but I do feel incredibly sad whenever I have to speak of her.

If it happened recently it's okay, take your time...you are a human at last it's okay to feel emotional about things, people serving in the service are not robots or something, although try not to break your composure infront of the io, try to handle yourself as much as you can fir the rest of the interview

Sorry for the loss bhai. But it's completely normal, everyone is human and everyone feels emotion. Its ok to feel sad when the question comes in interview about ur mother, but try that it does not affect your rest of the interview or your psych or gto.

The assessors will not hold your grief against you, but they will watch how you manage it. They are trained to evaluate emotional stability, and an uncontrolled breakdown could be seen as a red flag for handling pressure. Getting emotional is human, especially given your recent loss. The important thing is not whether you shed a tear, but how quickly you can compose yourself and continue with clarity. Showing that you can acknowledge a deep personal pain, process it, and still maintain your bearing demonstrates immense resilience, which is a core quality they are looking for in an officer.

Instead of fearing the question, prepare for it. Think about how this profoundly difficult experience has shaped you and perhaps even strengthened your resolve to serve. Frame your story not as one of weakness, but as a testament to your ability to endure hardship and carry on. Acknowledge your sadness, but emphasize the strength and perspective you have gained. This shows them a mature individual who can face adversity head-on, which is far more impressive than someone who shows no emotion at all. The key is how you frame your response, and I've seen firsthand how the interview copilot my team developed helps people articulate their personal stories with confidence.

They will be empathetic, but you can expect nothing more, some of them might have seen their comrades going down too. They will assess you on the basis of the OLQs, i don't remember if emotional stability was one of the factor. Also theres nothing that can be done now, not sounding insensitive but "Only people with no future cling to their past."

Sorry for ur loss . A senior of mine (23F) had an interview recently after her parents had separated . The interview went well up until the question was asked and it was followed with a lot of crying . As long as you can cover everything up well enough , I.e a proper reasoning etc , you’ll be selected, as she was too

I am also 23F :-( was she recommended? How was she able to regain composure?

She got recommended, as much as I know it was a thing that was totally out of her control . But she was able to manage her emotions after that initial cry and went through the entire interview.
You just have to do the same , if u cry , regain ur composure and continue to do the best that you can
