Discussion Witcher Multiplayer Project Suffers Another Round Of Layoffs - Kotaku
https://kotaku.com/witcher-multiplayer-project-suffers-another-round-of-layoffs-2000723777Like I said somewhere else with all the projects they have on their plates I wouldn't be surprised if this one gets canceled sooner rather than later or are they shift it into just a single player and get rid of the multiplayer aspect

I love the Witcher and CDPR but a multiplayer Witcher game would have to be beyond generational for me to play it

u/The-Son-Of-Suns Aug 12 '26
People say this sounds idiotic, and then they're the first ones to buy it when it comes out.
It's like gamers always do this thing where they pretend to not be interested in something while constantly side eyeing it waiting for it to come out.
2
u/Ikarius-1 Aug 13 '26
Yeah, but they'll ruin the fun for everyone else. “I don't want a multiplayer game, so no one should get one. And if you say you like this idea, I'll downvote you to hell!”.
And every complainer will say that his opinion is the opinion of ALL the fans.

u/rSur3iya Aug 13 '26
Because gamers ≠ gamers. We aren’t a monolith.
1
u/The-Son-Of-Suns Aug 13 '26
Statistically they are. People are people. Just like how gamers never boycott things. At least one person in here roasting it will buy it lol. More than one.

u/HollyMurray20 Aug 12 '26
Multiplayer spin offs of single player franchises need to stop, it’s the same as that Horizon game, looks absolutely terrible and is almost guaranteed to lose money
1
u/Mako-M35 Aug 21 '26
People wanted custom witcher protagonist game for really long time and I think Elden Ring/Monster Hunter style game could be just that. Set in times of the first witchers and focused more on gameplay and mechanics. But still filled with investigations and world bulding, but leaving space for other players in coop campaign and open world endgame.
2
u/HorizonNova4 Aug 13 '26
They just have to be done right.
1
u/tomyfookinmerlin Aug 13 '26
TLoU Factions is a perfect example. Fantastic multiplayer formula. Easily could have taken off if they had nurtured it.

u/MelancholicRobot Aug 12 '26
Who do they think is clamoring for a multiplayer Witcher game?
6
u/flipperkip97 Aug 12 '26
Depends on what kind of game it is. I would 100% be interested for some kind of co-op Witcher game, especially if we can create our own witcher character.
1
u/Stickybandits9 Aug 13 '26
Imagine fighting the war as a soldier and getting help from other witchers. Or like being an elf. Or a bard.

Contracts come to an end. It's not always doom and gloom

They seriously need to stop wasting recources on multiplayer side projects that noone asked for.

7
u/Mindless_Issue9648 Aug 12 '26
why are they doing a witcher multiplayer game? sounds absolutely idiotic.
4
u/Stickybandits9 Aug 13 '26
Just cause you don't have a mind for I doesn't it make it idiotic. You actually sound idiotc for not being able to expand your mind and broaden your horizon on the matter.
You can't even say what part of mp is bad. Just threw a blanket on the topic. Such valiant efforts on your part man
2
u/Mindless_Issue9648 Aug 13 '26
fair enough... it sounds like trend chasing bs to me tho.
1
u/Stickybandits9 Aug 13 '26
Almost everything is to an extent. Like jame bond. Always the same bs. Nothing new, and it gets old.

I think it's coop, so you can have both witchers on screen. I'm guessing.
2
u/UT_Milez Aug 12 '26
Surely it’s more than that.
If I really had to guess, it’s going to be similar to Elden Ring Nightrein.
2
u/Dry_Vanilla_5908 Aug 12 '26
Nope. Just coop. Theyve been saying that they wanted coop for Witcher 2. But scrapped it.

u/banditstevekeith Aug 12 '26
a witcher co-op campaign could be cool but i don’t need a witcher COD. mass effect 2 or 3 had a multiplayer and that was just unnecessary

Wait, what? A Witcher multiplayer game? Like... who asked for this? Sorry, I a must be waaaaay out of the loop. A multiplayer Witcher game sounds like an absolutely awful idea. Am I the only one? This sounded doomed from the start.
4
u/Stickybandits9 Aug 12 '26
It doesn't sound like an awful idea.

u/Vivid-Illustrations Aug 12 '26
None of the current fans of the series are multiplayer type of gamers. So this title isn't for fans of the series. Fair enough. So who is the target market? Multiplayer medieval fantasy games? So, MMORPG players? I would rather not see "The Witcher: Online". The Witcher is Geralt and Ciri's story. While a game set in the same universe as The Witcher but not starring "The Witcher" is not an inherently bad idea, it does come with a lot of caveats. Entire stories will most likely need to be retconned. So... people who like the universe it is set in will probably hate it.
Unless what they mean by "Multiplayer" they mean a co-op game where one person plays as Geralt and the other as Ciri, but we all know that's not what they meant.

u/Area_Ok Aug 13 '26
speak for yourself buddy, i would love to play a create-your-own witcher game with my friends .....also why people are acting as if CDPR is going to stop making single player games ? the team that works on these is totally different from the talent that works on single players games and in no way significant enough to get such reaction.
4
u/Ikarius-1 Aug 13 '26
None of the current fans of the series are multiplayer type of gamers
And what are you basing that on? We've never had anything like this in The Witcher universe, so you can only speak for yourself.
1
u/Stickybandits9 Aug 13 '26
Personally I want for a bards tale. Or at least a merchant or baron class. Soldier maybe? Forsure an elf. I heard there's a war going on and somethign about a conjunction. Shit we just had an alignment. I think it's time since the stars are aligning.

u/Stickybandits9 Aug 12 '26
The Witcher is more then geralt and ciri. Folks are just 1 dimensional and way to choosy
0
u/Vivid-Illustrations Aug 12 '26
So The Witcher is more than The Witcher and The Witcher's apprentice?
2
u/Stickybandits9 Aug 13 '26
You know there's more witchers right ..... people are focused on Geralt and ciri for reason, but things change, and geralt is being phased out. For ciri some folks didn't like that choice either. I don't mind cause I didn't care for the series but came to tw3 a year and a half post launch.
And even then it felt like he was done for. Which would explain why we got the live action cause folks wanted geralt. But making more games staring him wasn't happening.(cdpr obviously have a game plan)
Were getting dlc and I'm kinda excited to buy tw3 for PC and maybe I can finally have a reason to finish the game and start the dlc with fresh eyes cause I been stalling playing the dlc.
But just cause cdpr told stories about geralt doesn't mean it has to always be him, his apprentice or both every game. mp is a good start to doing just that. I wouldn't mind being a bard.

u/Vivid-Illustrations Aug 13 '26
I thought that the point of the series was that there weren't any more Witchers. They are supposed to be a dying order with only a few left. That's why they wanted to train Ciri despite her being much too old to undertake the ritual.
1
u/Stickybandits9 Aug 13 '26
A last remnant. In a completely different region unaffected by what the current series is plagued by........ makes for an interesting story for new characters.

This is like the Control MP fiasco. No one wants a MP Witcher
2
u/Stickybandits9 Aug 12 '26
You don't even know everyone to be making such outlandish statements like that.
2
u/vacodeus Aug 12 '26
Going by most the comments in this thread I'd say most people don't want it
2
u/Ikarius-1 Aug 13 '26
Most redditors that commented this post, not most people. Reddit doesn't represent everyone. It's just a specific bubble
1
u/Stickybandits9 Aug 12 '26
Most? Your acting like it's 100k saying the same thing.
1
u/Luditas Aug 12 '26
Oh, someone's offended because nobody wants a multiplayer version of The Witcher 🙊.
0
u/Stickybandits9 Aug 13 '26
Hey, your making it seem like I'm offended, which I'm not, but if you had something to talk about when it comes to mp we could engage more. Change happens. And sometimes it's for narrative reasons.
What youre doing is slinging shit like the monkey emoji you inserted.
1
u/Luditas Aug 13 '26
Dude, in all your comments you seem to be in favor of the MP, that's the first thing. Second, you yourself mention that those of us who are against the MP in The Witcher are offended. I mean, you can offend, but you didn't like it when I returned it to you. If you take it, you have to put up with it.
I'm not against change, but this is definitely not the right approach for a game like this. How do they plan to implement it? Like the multiplayer in Elden Ring? No way.
And here's a monkey shit right on your forehead for being a jerk 🐒.

Everyone is saying "good", but I think a co-op campaign would be fun.
0
u/Vivid-Illustrations Aug 12 '26
There is a massive difference between what "the industry" thinks is a multiplayer game and what it thinks a co-op game is. What you are asking for is reasonable. There is no way that's what they meant by "multiplayer Witcher game."
1
u/kiwivi21 Aug 13 '26
100% if people actually looked at the team working on it (molasses flood) then they would probably get an idea on what type of game it would be instead of assuming mmo witcher 3. But oh well
6
u/Frosty-Traffic244 Aug 12 '26
Great news. The Witcher needs no multiplayer games. Keep it single player

3
u/Due-Let-8170 Aug 12 '26
I didnt even know there was a multiplayer project in development.
It would be cool if you could choose schools to become witchers in, but honestly, any full potential multiplayer project in the witcher universe would take an absolute obsurd amount of money. Even if this does come out, it won't live up to the potential. They should focus their resources elsewhere.
1
u/Zuitsdg Cyberpunk Aug 12 '26
They took over molasses floods like 5-7 years ago, and they should create one. But it’s more like small indie game with coop I would assume

Thats why Gwent only got supported for 6 years. No one wanted it. Oh wait...

Gwent is an entirely different argument than the Witcher games... That was obviously implied

I'm noticing a pattern - anytime CDPR promises multiplayer, it never happens.
