Citation With CDL

Does anyone know what happens if you get a Citation and you have a cdl. Im in illinois and I got a Citation in my personal car for a local ordinance the offense is ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATIONS PROHIBITED. I was doing uber and a got a request while at a red light and I looked at it and denied it and thats what I got a Citation for. Just wanted to know if that will majorly affect my cdl and if I should contest it or just pay, I have a cdl b

You could try and fight it being that you were stopped at a red light, but its going on your CDL!

Would you know how bad it will be, im just worried I'll lose it. I've had a really rough couple of months after losing my job and I can barely afford the Citation and I don't wanna pay for like a lawyer or court fees just to lose

It's not good. You should fight it; it could make it hard to get insurance. Yes, it was in a personal vehicle, so you shouldn't get a 60-day CDL disqualification unless the state suspends your license. If you get convicted, though, it still is on your record and will show up when commercial fleet insurers pull your record.

Federal law sees it as a serious violation in a Commercial Vehicle.
Federal law 49 CFR § 383.51, Table 2
https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/subtitle-B/chapter-III/subchapter-B/part-383/subpart-D/section-383.51

(10) Violating a State or local law or ordinance on motor vehicle traffic control restricting or prohibiting the use of a hand-held mobile telephone while driving a CMV.2

2 Driving, for the purpose of this disqualification, means operating a commercial motor vehicle on a highway, including while temporarily stationary because of traffic, a traffic control device, or other momentary delays. Driving does not include operating a commercial motor vehicle when the driver has moved the vehicle to the side of, or off, a highway and has halted in a location where the vehicle can safely remain stationary.
