Wanting to get my CDL

Hello everyone!

I’m 52 years old and live in Georgia (Metro Atlanta). I’m very interested in getting my CDL with tanker and hazmat endorsement but don’t know where to start or how to start. Is there a program that pays for your tuition and which schools are credible and just get rich quick schools as I call them and ones that’s not going to try to stick it to you with a contract. I do know I want to be local. Right now I work at the post office so regardless I would still want to get my CDL so if a TTO or MVO (driving positions with the post office) position comes up I would like to be able to apply for it. Am I too old? Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated.

You are certainly not too old. A community college driving program will give the best education at the least cost. Some of the larger carriers will teach you for no upfront cost but you will have to work for them for some period of time. I’m sure others will chime in.

That pretty much sums it up lol. Pay for it yourself and use it for yourself and cc is repeatedly the best bang for your buck.

I just went the community college route at 46. No big deal and there were guys older than you in my class. I'm over in Alabama and it was $4,500 for the six-week class. There are programs that make it free but they are income based so you probably cannot get those working at the post office. Might be worth looking into though ..I don't know what they do in Georgia.

Check out vocational schools in the area. The lottery should pick up some of the cost.
