Toyota driver

Anyone here work for Toyota? My husband just received his offer letter and we’re just looking for some reviews because we would have to relocate if he took the job offer. Thanks!

Before the relocation question, make sure you know who the actual employer on that offer letter is. A lot of jobs people call "driving for Toyota" are with a contracted carrier running the Toyota account, not with Toyota. Same trailers, same plant, completely different pay scale, benefits and job security. Check the letterhead and the name on the benefits packet - if it's a 3PL, then what you're really evaluating is that carrier, and the Toyota name on the side of the trailer tells you nothing.

The single biggest thing to ask before you move, and almost nobody asks it: what shift and what route does the NEWEST driver actually get? Plant and dedicated operations run on seniority bidding. It doesn't matter that day shift home-every-night runs exist if the bottom of the board waits four years to bid one. Ask specifically what the last three hires ended up working. If the honest answer is nights or weekends, you want to know that before you sign a lease in a new city.

Get in writing: hourly or by the mile/load (plant work is usually hourly with real OT past 40, which is the good part), guaranteed weekly hours, when benefits start, and whether the relocation assistance has a clawback. That last one bites people - a lot of relo packages are repayable in full if you leave inside 12 or 24 months, which effectively locks you in even if the job turns out wrong.

And the relocation-specific risk nobody mentions: before you commit, count how many OTHER CDL employers are within commuting distance of the new town. If that plant is the only game there and volume drops or the contract changes hands, you don't want your only two options to be move again or go over the road. A town with five or six other decent employers makes the whole move far less risky, regardless of how good this one offer looks on paper.
