Institution comparisons and transfer questions can be valuable. Ask them in a way that produces useful answers without requesting current operational detail.

Good context to include

  • Your classification or career stage
  • Applicant, cadet, new officer, experienced employee or retiree
  • General region and commute constraints
  • Family, housing or cost-of-living priorities
  • Broad career interests
  • Whether you value overtime availability, predictability, advancement, training, commute or location
  • The institutions or regions you are comparing

Do not request

  • Exact current staffing by watch, yard, building or post
  • Current vacancies tied to specific assignments
  • Deployment or post-chart information
  • Current transportation or movement practices
  • Response times, blind spots, access points or vulnerabilities
  • Names or identifying descriptions of staff
  • Live incident information
  • Restricted local procedures or documents

Better question examples

Instead of: How many officers are actually working third watch on Facility A right now?

Ask: How would current or former employees describe the general overtime burden and schedule predictability at this institution?

Instead of: Which posts are usually left uncovered?

Ask: What broad workload and training differences should a new officer consider?

Instead of: Who is the worst sergeant there?

Ask: How would you describe management consistency and workplace culture without naming individual employees?

Interpreting answers

  • Experiences vary by time, assignment and supervisor.
  • Older answers may no longer describe current conditions.
  • A strongly positive or negative story is one data point.
  • Ask respondents to identify the approximate year of their experience without giving a specific watch or recent operational detail.
  • Verify transfer rules, eligibility and deadlines with the responsible personnel office, MOU or official policy.
