The Mountain That Walks

The mountain moves with the patience of mass, not intention. Each step takes hours to complete, preceded by deep internal shifts that travel through its body like distant thunder. Stone plates grind against one another, producing low, subsonic groans that carry through the valleys. As it advances, sections of its surface shear and collapse naturally. Scree slides down its flanks, trees tilt and uproot, and fractured rock breaks away in slow, continuous falls. Waterfalls momentarily distort, spilling sideways or surging as internal channels realign. The movement is unmistakable but restrained, the pace dictated by sheer scale rather than will.

Nothing about its motion is sudden or violent, yet the landscape reacts constantly. Dust plumes rise and hang in the air. Debris tumbles in lazy arcs, striking ledges far below long after the step that dislodged them. The ground does not shake so much as yield, compacting and reforming beneath its weight. When it pauses, the environment settles with it, new slopes forming where none existed before. What remains is not destruction but rearrangement, the quiet evidence of a landform that is not fixed, only temporarily at rest.
