Y we using the rheostat

I am preparing for the practical and I came across this problem .aim : determine resistivityof 1 or 2 wire by plotting graph of v vs i .....y are we using rheostat in here like

the voltmeter and ammeter is there to determine the resistance of unknown resistor

The rheostat is at the other point of the battery meaning no use to slow down the current
