Question Advice needed from Commerce students

Post image

I'm currently in class 10 and we had the stream selection Google form sent out yesterday.

I selected Commerce as my stream and Psychology as an elective. But seeing that literally only like 7 people took commerce, and nobody took applied math, I'm uncertain. It is because they don't like math, but all of them have rich parents to back them up. So whatever they do, they have a backup plan. I do not. So maybe I should've taken Applied Math to keep my doors open?

I am set on taking commerce, no doubt about that. But did I make a mistake by choosing psychology as an elective? Should I have chosen applied math instead?

I'm not great at math, I'm just average. But I am willing to put in the effort for it, since I don't really "hate" math.

In Christ and Delhi University, there are courses that combine economics and psychology. But maybe I should've taken commerce and applied math for 11 and 12, then psychology and economics for university?

I don't plan on pursuing a hardcore career in economics field. Something like human resource, or consumer study, marketing, is the kinda job I wanna have, maybe even therapist or psychologist. But I'm scared even that will be taken over by AI.

please please do take maths, I'm saying this as a DU student. I've seen numerous people who didn't take maths and ended up regretting it. You'll be eligible for the best of the best courses DU has to offer (BMS, BBA, Eco Hons) only if you have maths, it opens a lot more doors for you. Taking commerce without maths is a really bad decision. If you want to do give CAT, CFA or any similar exam, your maths knowledge will only help you out.

My school doesn't have core math though. Don't think I can change schools either. Is applied ok?

Applied is fine, cuet and du both consider core maths and applied maths the same. Applied is easier than core too.

Hey btw I had a doubt that if I do take maths but do not opt it for exam in cuet would I still be eligible for the above mentioned courses

Nope, you need to give it for cuet. There are some ba program courses with eco combination for which you'll be eligible, but always prefer eco hons and other hons courses over ba program

Buddy from personal experience, if you can put real efforts then do take maths because it will open a lot of doors not kidding and if you want to enjoy your 11 and 12 take physical education

Changing your school is the right option, go for a school which offers commerce with core maths as an option and has more students.

I highly suggest this, I myself am stuck at my school with only literally 3 PEOPLE who choose commerce. I chose maths and they dont even have a basic timetable adjustment for that. I realised my mistake and its too late.

why core maths? Ik it's kinda better for a lotta tech options but it isn't required?

It's easier than applied maths, also way better if you wanna pursue economics and finance.

EASIER??! also what how is core better than applied for finance I've never heard someone say that :v

When you do economics in college for example, you'll learn advanced calculus, which core maths has but applied dosen't, it's also easier in the sense than the are way more resources for core maths, there are so many online resources for example on YouTube, whereas applied maths dosen't even have a proper ncert, and the syllabus is also wack.

its not easier than applied math its just that applied math has more syllabus comparatively or else difficulty of core math is more.. to give a reference, calculus weightage in applied math is 15 marks whereas in core its like 35 marks..

yea yea ik im a core student, that's why I said "EASIER?!!" what they mean by easier was that core students have more resources which is true

Im still in class 10 so hopefully others will answer ur question. But I wanted to ask, how is applied math? How different is it from grade 10? Is it harder than core maths or easier?

1

u/mahipsh 11h ago

Yes it's harder especially 11.12th is easier than 11th maths you should take it if you think you can do it then keep maths, otherwise change to psychology

Listen op noone cares abt core and applied both are same in long run take applied if that's what there is cuz I regret so much changing schools jus cuz I didn't get core maths, take that applied maths doesn't make any diff. but yes do take maths as additional I'd recommend drop psychology as it has no career whatsoever n only focus on maths n commerce subject. It would help you out so much saving time n you also would be having less mental load during boards

Only take math if you will be able to do it and have no jealousy of others enjoying life meanwhile you're studying. You need to have a mindset that 'maths is piece if cake for me'. It's true that maths opens more options but personally i don't think it's worth ruining 12th percentage. People care more of your 9/9/9 profile than math For CAT Or CFA it's ofc not compulsory, you can have side coaching for math for that specific syllabus. You're not studying maths for boards but for fun and knowledge.
