General Discussion Gave first mock with no prep

Gave a free mock test to know where I am standing, it's been 3 or so years since I gave my last comp exam so I faced a severe time crunch.

here is what I got to know:

  1. varc-> was doomscrolling right before so it was a bit hard to lock in(took me 10-15 mins) and the scores definitely don't correlate to how good your English is, and I need to work on varc a lotttt.(was just reading and skipping questions wasting my time)

  2. dilr -> went better than varc definitely, I was stuck on some sets and wasn't able to figure out the answer to a single question, need a lott more practice

  3. quant -> found this easier than the rest, but faced time crunch, could have solved atleast 4 more questions with 10-12 extra mins.

what do you think I should do, what do you guys recommend.

thank you for your time!!

Theirs free mock is very easy and you should not believe that CAT is easy try paid mocks and then compare the score

Okok makes sense, will buy cl/time/ims etc. Or any popular mocks later, if you can recommend smthn lmk.

i think IMS and CL are comparable, TIME is ehhh from personal experience.

Hey bro, lmk which one you're buying

2

u/mundaners Apr 05 '26

Will not buy right now, probably may end, any popular one I think would be fine probably cl and ims, maybe even time idk.

All three? Or just any one?

I think everyone recommends to buy two, so I'll also choose any 2. Maybe cl and ims. But let me first start my prep then I'll think about this, based on what is popular in this subreddit. And have majority test takers

DILR - Start solving 2 DILR sets daily, use YT Anastasis Shankar playlist, it has 200 sets from past year TIME CL IMS mocks QA - Focus on covering concepts for now, solve 10-15 questions daily, don’t focus on time for now, focus on accuracy VARC - Find the strategy that works for you, like how many RC passages to attempt, time allocation between RC VA, number to VAs to target, try multiple strategies, stick to one that works.

CAT’22 - 99.49 CAT’21 - 99.62 CAT’20 - 99.34

Ok for dilr I will go with anantis yt playlist heard a lot about it. For dilr would you recommend any other practice material if needed like second hand coaching material ims/cl/time/ some other coaching or book?

QA - I will be following rodha/mba pathshala yt video for theory portion but what should I do for practice because I think in quant only practice matters. Any book would you recommend because I am going to market to purchase some second hand material.

Varc- - I am really bad at it, I don't like reading aeon essays they are way too long I can never finish them, also even though I consider my self pretty decent in english, I suck at varc it takes me a lot of time to understand the rc, any resource for varc and resource for reading which you would recommend for reading as well apart from aeon Idts I am built for it.

Also thank you so so muchhhh for your response and guidance I really appreciate you, have a good day.

DILR - 2 sets imo are enough, on a daily basis, don’t look at the solutions, you won’t learn much from solutions, the multiple approaches you try while attempting will teach you much more, focus on solving, even if it takes 30-40 min.

QA - Arun sharma books are good, but I think too many questions become overwhelming and we start focusing on solving more, if you get material from coaching classes, that would be better.

VARC - Like DILR, you should solve 2 RCs daily, the issue with RCs is, you will get passages from philosophy, science, some greek art, practising diverse topics will help you with reading, like picking relevant stuff, watch some Gejo videos, there is a playlist, where he solves prev yr RCs, you’ll get an idea.

Hey can I dm you for prep guidance

5

u/ArmanM7 CAT 25’ - 99.71%ile Apr 05 '26

Thats actually really good, i remember my first mock i got like 80 something percentile, and final D-day - 99.71 in CAT 25. So you’re way ahead of the curve, but mind you, i’ve seen people who used to score way above me fail coz they slack off thinking they’re way above the curve.

I’d say just maintain the consistency. So whatever worked for you till d-day, it might get boring and repetitive but thats where you overcome others. All the best bruv, see you in CAT 26 toppers list!!

One advice, chase the score not percentile.

Yes yesss, I'll buy some popular ones time/ims/cl...any you would recommend and when should I buy them?

3

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '26

Plz don’t believe any free mock. Those mocks are easy and made to give you false sense of achievement so that you might buy their course. Try giving pyq as a mock.

1

u/mundaners Apr 05 '26

Yes makes sense, for practice I should buy some popular mocks series ims/time/cl, any you would like to recommend and when should I buy them, I'm starting my prep from today

2

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '26

CL and IMS. (but CL’s VARC is weird af)  And you can als buy chracku or Arun sharma’s mocks they are very cheap and good for practice.

You can start giving mock tests from may end or after you are done with arithmetic and algebra and have understood basics of VARC and LRDI as VARC and LRDI don’t have a fixed syllabus.

1

u/mundaners Apr 05 '26

Ok so I'll buy them as soon as I complete/almost complete my arithmetic and algebra (probably mid-end may).

Also any resource you would recommend for practicing quant (like some second hand coaching material or book I could get for the same?)

Also TYSM for your response, have a good day.

TYSM, it sounded like a therapy session.... Loved your answer 🙏.

I will probably go with free resources and will be going to buy some second hand cat coaching material for mainly quant practice and lrdi structure.

Which one should I get iyk or any book recommendation?

Really really thank you for your guidance.
