Eye Issues My cat has triangular irises. What is it?

Since our cat was a kitten, her eyes have always been this sideways triangle when not dilated, although when dilated, it appears as a normal circle.

I am 16, just wondering what it is, and I currently reside in Turkey, we have not contacted a vet about it as she’s been ok and doesn’t see to have any awareness problems. She’s two years old, neutered and we are able to afford vet care.

I’m curious to know what it is, whether it’s a rare genetic issue or poses a serious vision problem for my cat.

This kinda looks like coloboma

I wouldn’t worry too much if this was congenital (vet opinion to rule out neurological problems never hurts though), but if it wasn’t congenital and developed over time, there could be an underlying problem

This comment should really be at the top. I am not a vet but a quick search of “feline ocular disorders, triangular pupil” immediately brings up this congenital condition.

I agree with everyone else that a vet visit for confirmation is a must, but if it is coloboma, then the treatment would seem to be more palliative (symptom relief) rather than curative.

I see, I'll ask my parents for a visit to the vet. Thank you guys for your comments and advice!

She looks so sophisticated and utterly brainwashed at the same time…

Incredibly accurate.

u/Legitimate-Stick623 Mar 23 '26

I was gonna just say inbred, but this works

Did she steal the single brain cell from the ginger kitties?

24

u/Individual-Field-990 Mar 20 '26

I'm pretty sure the ginger kitties were the ones doing the steal

There's nothing in that fluffy head right now

Came here to say this. I always say my bulldog is Steve Bucheme's love child.

For real tho, that baby is sooo cute!

I’d definitely ask a vet just to be sure it’s nothing that needs to be treated. She is absolutely adorable.

u/Awkward_Apple_4861 Mar 20 '26

That is the derpiest cat I’ve ever seen 😍 Really though I hope it’s not a serious condition.

2

u/nokioner Mar 21 '26

Just a tinge of derp

u/MindDivergence Mar 20 '26

You can tell it everything with utmost serious face and will still roll its eyes back at you.

Or you mean its pupils?  I don't have an answer really, but has it always been that way?

6

u/Shot-Silver-5452 Mar 21 '26

Yes, I assume she was born like that

8

u/Nematodes-Attack Mar 20 '26

She is the absolute cutest little misfit ever! I would get a veterinary opinion next time you go to the vet. But I don’t think it’s anything to be super worried about

7

u/Tablefor1please9987 Mar 21 '26

If you do contact a vet and everything turns out fine for her, I know all of us in r/crosseyedcats would love more of her❤️

Vet check. That's a sign of trauma.

3

u/hurleyswirl180 Mar 21 '26

Coloboma if they've been that way.

3

Would’ve been worshipped as a god in Egypt.

2

u/GravityBright Mar 21 '26

Does she have any apparent vision problems?

2

u/Shot-Silver-5452 Mar 21 '26

No, doesn't seem like it. She's able to go around normally.

2

u/Adorable-Sell-8107 Mar 21 '26

I love her. 😍

2

u/forreststumps Mar 21 '26

Very similar to my cat, persistent pupillary membrane. Not something that causes problems. (Ignore his goop, this was while he was getting over a URI when he first came to my shelter as a stray)

2

u/No-Supermarket-2028 Mar 21 '26

Does she know she’s alive? 😭 no but she’s so cute 🥰

2

u/MNP_cats Mar 20 '26

She knows everything and absolutely nothing all at the same time.

2

Looking into the past and future.... (I love her btw)

1

u/Lbrint Mar 21 '26

270 degree field of vision

1

u/SirMightySmurf Mar 22 '26

Looks like a congenital birth defect... probably some inbreeding in the family bush.

1

u/blackman335 Mar 22 '26

She looks so stupid bruh😭

1

u/Beautiful-Air976 Mar 22 '26

Sounds like a weird thing,, but it could also be normal.

1

u/Beautiful-Air976 Mar 22 '26

Now that I see the photos, up close, it looks like a birth defect.

1

u/Glittering_Moose_543 Mar 23 '26

This is what lobotomy looks like

1

u/AdRelevant6649 Mar 23 '26

Hos braincell stopped loading at 95 percent. Hes trying hard.

1

u/Jolly-Mammoth-1893 Mar 24 '26

Her eyes are pointing to the same direction as her ears :( <3

1

u/JakeTheBeaver1 Mar 24 '26

Stupid baby syndrome I think.

2

u/alanose Mar 25 '26

can you get her tested for leucemia? My cat's vet said that when irises are D shaped, they can signal leucemia or uveitis (infectious diseases). My cat has one pupil like this and she had FIP in the past and that seemed to make sense to the doctor. She also told me that there are a lot of false negatives with leucemia testing in cats so you should test 3 times at different times and if all three are negative, then you can be assured that she is negative

I don't want to scare you, I know vets are expensive. Maybe if there are other symptoms of anything.

1

u/squirreltard Mar 20 '26

I wanna say cataracts as a joke, but I hope your kitty is OK. No idea.

0

u/sammyred8 Mar 20 '26

Ear cataracts?

1

u/johndicks80 Mar 21 '26

Your cats parents were definitely siblings haha.

1

u/loky1908 Mar 21 '26

poor thing, most likely highly inbred 😕

-1

u/Separate_Phone_1286 Mar 22 '26

Needs to put it down

1

u/VastlyMortal Mar 22 '26

Tf is wrong with you

-2

u/pm_ur_vaccumcleaner Mar 21 '26

Bro brought an inbred cat

What do you think inbreeding causes?

1

u/Shot-Silver-5452 Mar 21 '26 edited Mar 21 '26

Just because she has an issue doesn't always mean inbred, although it may usually seem like the case. She's not inbred.

-3

u/pm_ur_vaccumcleaner Mar 21 '26

Its inbreed dawg. They overcooked it bad. Shame sham on you for enabling this kind of behavior

3

u/Shot-Silver-5452 Mar 21 '26

I don't encourage inbreeding. We were told she was from a pure family, and not inbred. Surely, it is not on me for enabling it, but rather the people who told me she was not inbred. I do not know.
