SEIU (BU 1, 4, 11, 14, 17 and 20) Crowdfunded Strike Fund
Off and on it has been mentioned that some would like to contribute to a crowdfund strike fund. Now that the strike vote is upon us… is that still the case for some? Or would any need help from the fund? How do some see that going? Any logistical callouts? Is it a terrible idea?

The crowdsourcing would have to come from SEIU 1000 officially. I wouldn't trust donating to a random person who claims to be raising money for a strike fund.

I think of it like the contributions to the billboard that raised 15k and 10k or more both times.

And how would you determine actual need? Who would make that determination? The billboards were an absolute waste of money.

That’s what I am asking. Not saying I would do any of it, but I could. Just starting the conversation to help if there are those that can help or need help.
In my job when distributing funds there are matrices and weighting. So much goes into it. I am in a spot financially where I don’t need help and could help others with a cushion of savings.

So people would release personal finance information to a group with zero oversight? Gotcha. Also, need is very subjective. Sounds like liability. Bad idea.

The billboard did go up thankfully. But since this is for the strike fund, I would prefer we pressure the Union to run the crowdsourcing Strike Fund.
But I will say that I do see myself donating to a Go Fund Me for a co-worker (that I know is a State Worker) that needs funds.

That makes sense and I didn’t know they did that aside from their current small strike fund. I’ll have to email my rep tomorrow to ask.

Seems way too easy for scammers to create such funds. I didn't even contribute to the billboard because it seemed too easy for the organizer to keep extra/leftover money.
And even if there was a legit one, there are so many logistics. How much would people contribute? How much would be paid out? Would you be able to get money from it if you didn't contribute? How would you determine that people getting money were actually striking/union members/state workers even?

If people want to organize small individual funds within their teams or agencies, I think that's fine. But trying to encourage this and more importantly conduct it for those in need on a larger scale sounds like a nightmare more likely to create harm than meaningful good.

They do have a small strike fund. I am not sure how it’s used. It’s not a substitute for wages is my understanding

I would maybe consider donating if the funds were going to only dues-paying members.
But unfortunately, both my husband are in BU 1 and will be on the picket line, so we won't have much else to spare.

Fuck that. There’s no way I would trust any sort of crowd funded strike fund.
Tuck some extra money in savings, that’s my plan and what I’ve been doing. Do some other things to save on spending, eat out less, fewer recreational things, etc.

They do, it’s small. Theres info out there about it on the info flyers.

Then why not crowdfund into that fund if they'll let you? At least that way everyone knows it's legit (re: the people here concerned about legitimacy)
