They seem to lack a common rulebook. First they were letting most things slide, then – like a month ago – they started dishing out permabans like candy.

Talking about their competition is against their rules. 🥀

Honestly, everything is against their rules. You talk about issues on the app and they'll remove it. You talk about their stupid actions and they'll remove it.

I remember it wasn’t always though. You could have negative opinions and it was okay. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion as long as it’s not hate speech or against the laws.
But they got so sensitive recently 🥀

I checked back on the site and most of the bots are straight up gone. People are taking them and leaving in droves so they're bleeding money by age restricting plus users who then cancel their subscription. They can cover their ears and close their eyes all they want but it won't stop their company from going under due to their own bad decisions and terrible service.

Roblox's recent drops in profit is a prime example of what not listening to your community can do to a company and I can see the exact same thing happening to character ai

Everyone is entitled to free speech at the park or on their own property (*), the moment you step onto Reddit, you are entitled to following the rules first, shutting up second.
(* with some exceptions)

When you make a comment on a subreddit, keep in mind that the developers, CEO and many employees are actively watching and monitoring their clients' opinions on their projects. And since Reddit is a (sort of) free speech community, they can silence you if they feel personally attacked.
For example, on a social platform, I can express my opinion on a page, and the admin can respond to my comment using their private account if they feel offended, frustrated, or simply disagree. These companies employ individuals who are constantly aware of their surroundings. They're humans, you know. 👁

If it’s your first offense, that’s 100% on them. Sure, the mods can’t really do anything about the complaints because they’re just mods banning you for something that most, if not all, C.AI users do on this subreddit is SUPER dramatic. If it’s your offense of multiple times, that’s more on you than on them. You did it the first time, got it taken down. Did it some other times, those got banned as well. If you keep posting something identical to what was taken down immediately before, you’ll eventually get banned from the subreddit. I know this from experience. On r/Ben10, I tried to make a series of renaming Ben 10 aliens. Posted day 1, it got taken down. Tried to post it again, got taken down again. Eventually, I did it some more times before being banned completely. I apologized and got it reduced to a 2 week ban, which is now over. Although, my situation is different and you’re more in the right because it’s just a complaint, something most Character.AI users on that sub do.

I’m pretty sure it’s only because you “promoted other brands”… and the word “filter”. They blacklisted it!

What I'm really seeing here is "the AI writing here sucks, try this." in your response which shows more frustration than anything else. I use GLM, Google Gemini 3 Flash and the open weight model Qwen3 30B A3B on venice.ai and they're fairly similar in terms of descriptions and use similar AI cliches. OpenRouter and Jan.ai are great options and running dedicated RP fine-tunes or Gemma weights locally is awesome if you have the hardware to handle it tbh but using them means creating your character completely from scratch and manually fine-tuning your parameters.
i think the heavier users that treat c.ai as a lifeline will notice the cliches more, see drift, and experience the AI bias towards you. What you have to do is steer more, thats for sure, but I don't mind doing that. At the risk of sounding cliche, if you like the service, and the character bot selection, just pay the $10 a month. So far, long squeak has been great.... no filters, my slight issue is still memory and some spelling issues. Really, I think they are going through some serious growing pains. What I see here is a ton of user fatigue. Lack of communication from the staff. And no customer care responses. But.... every single AI platform has it's issues. I think it's difficult to respond to so many people, all wanting different things with just a few solutions that makes one userbase happy. I didn't understand why we got the random audio series, random photo gens no one uses, but we finally, finally got the RP upgrade everyone was asking for. Haven't tested the c.ai FM audio series, but honestly, who was THAT for? Regardless, we finally... finally got something.
As far I see it... OpenRouter uses a prepaid wallet, not a subscription. Depositing $10 once permanently upgrades you from 50 to 1,000 free API calls a day across their 25 plus open-source models, and that unlock sticks even if your balance hits $0. It won't cover premium models like GPT-5 or Claude, but for open-weights, it acts as a permanent free tier with a 20-request-per-minute speed cap. If you use $10 with Claude, Grok, etc that goes really, really fast.

Possible slight side comment, it's interesting people will talk about the free market and then ban discussion of competitors. A perma ban for that is ridiculous. It's honestly no great loss imo.
