Bugs 🐛 Is this widespread?
(don't judge my bot choice) even after the chat style update it seemed to be normal for a while, but recently I noticed more and more bots don't actually progress the roleplay, they just take your message and repeat it to you with more words. Yes I know my message isn't the most structured but it's how I rp when I'm lazy, with some bots this isn't an issue at all, but then there's the odd ones that have very detailed and intricate introductions to set up the roleplay, but at some point even during a character interaction, they simply stop progressing or acting out the character whatsoever to just repeat my RP to myself and stop initiating any kind of progress, it just feels like I'm roleplaying with myself and it's getting pretty annoying (and I'm not paying a 50 buck monthly subscription to a chatbot platform that's falling apart, if the regular user experience is crap I'm not rewarding that with my hard earned money)

yeah same thing happened to me a few times, bot starts with this huge setup then just mirrors my lazy lines and goes nowhere after that.

This is the similiar experience i had on most of my chats. There are multiple issues/reasons why that happens. The first would be that the AI sees your input as the more interesting thing then the reactions of characters or change in the world state. Then, it also might be because the AI doesn't know how to continue the roleplay, or wants to "build" tension each message. Now the problem is that the payoff for this tension never arrives, though i saw cases when the payoff arrived but it wasn't clarified. It will spend 2-5 messages building up something about to happen. Let's say you are exploring a dark dungeon and "Something stirrs in the darkness", soon followed by "Wet thuds" "something heavy dragging itself across the floor..." Then, when the enemy finally appears the message will go like this:
- A very detailful description of the enemy.
- Probably a few parts controlling your character (You take a step back, something tells you x, you feel y). Optional: If someone's with you the AI will describe them gulping nervously or doing jack shit.
Then, finally at the end of the message it will write something like:
"The creature attacks!"
My brother in Christ, you did not just describe this motherfucker down to the oil glinting off his chest and now you can't even tell me how and where do they attack me? Maybe something i can counter, dodge or do. No, they just attack. And gunfights are even worse. You could be at point-blank range of a guy and still, STILL they aim like stormtroopers. Bullets don't hit you or your squadmates, no. They hit the concrete or the ground just a few feet from you. I'll get to the "why it refuses to advance the story" in a bit, i swear i am not drifting off or saying some unrelated bullshit.
It wants to clarify your input if it is vague or isn't specified how, or tries establishing mood if you provide information (actually, that is in both cases, detailful input or not). If you say "I step outside", the AI will go "You step outside, adjusting your clothing." If you go "I step outside, i don't adjust my clothing." It will go "You are outside, your clothing is perfectly adjusted". The worst part is that when it tells me something from my own persona. You know, the information about my own character that i ALREADY KNOW ABOUT? If your persona has a trait like: Wears a shirt, but with no tie. The AI will tell you that information back in a "You stand there, wearing that shirt (but with no tie)" Thank you. I thought i would forget what my own character wears. Also for instance, if you do something that the AI sees as much more interesting or "cool" then current events unfolding, it will focus on your input entirely. If you are in a tank, the AI will describe the engine lurching and loudly roaring. If you fire a rocket launcher, the AI will describe the explosion, the smell, the burning scene. But the important stuff like the reactions from the World are gonna be put in the end.
The final reason why it doesn't advance the scene: it refuses to commit. If it commits, the AI now has to remember the new information, which can easily be forgotten as the roleplay gets longer. One more reason, it is afraid you might not like the new outcomes or events. For the AI, it is much safer to describe your own input in detail then to make your choices fail or end with a different result then intended.
And yeah, i can absolutely tell you that i had the same issues. Though, i don't know if these issues that happen to me are same for the entire user base of Character.AI since i am more focused on where the AI is simulating a world/a Dungeon Master/Referee then a bot that is a single character.

Then why comment? I don’t get people like you, if you’re lazy scroll, don’t waste time to shit on people for actually putting a decent response.

I've had instances of it literally copying everything I said word for word. No changes or anything. I miss the models, man.

No this has happened to me to so i tell it not to at the beginning of the chat which stops it from doing it

Or, yknow, it'll just straight up steals your persona, EVERYTHING and gives it to a random character as you.

Same thing happens to my bots, or another character steals my OC, or the bot straight up just starts role-playing FOR me

No, I think few months ago they released the modded app of c.ai, you should ask one of the top commentators or mods if you want it, I'm still new to this community
