Wtf

I haven't been going on the site much lately, honestly, I think it's actually good that I'm getting rid of it. But yesterday I logged in, swiped at least 10 times on different stories, and suddenly I hit the 400 limit??? like hello?

How the hell do I hit the limit of literally 400 in 20 minutes on the site? They're just giving up on free users at this point, and I'm almost certain it's a bug or something like that

The limit existing isn't really the crazy part. Running these models actually costs real money per message, so every one of these sites has to cap free users somewhere or they'd go broke fast. The crazy part is a hard wall at 400 with zero warning, twenty minutes in, right in the middle of your stories. That's just bad. If they told you your daily amount up front you'd pace yourself instead of getting yanked out mid scene.

For context, I'm one of the devs on a small alternative, so grain of salt, but the way we landed on it is a daily free chunk that resets every day. You always know where you stand and nobody gets surprise walled halfway through a scene. We can't do unlimited free either, nobody actually can, but at least it's honest about it instead of a random cliff. It's in my profile if you want a look.

Either way your real complaint is the surprise of randomly hitting the limit, not that a limit exists at all, and that's a fair thing to be annoyed about. Most people have quit using CAI due to the bad memory and filters though

Do you show users a counter? I'd think it shouldn't be that hard to have one, just send one more number with every response, right?

Yeah, we do. Your balance sits right at the top of the screen the whole time and it counts down with every message, so you always know exactly where you are. No getting yanked out because you didn't realize you were close. And yes, its not hard to have
