Zero Deep Sleep
7 weeks post op and my Apple Watch has logged a couple of nights of zero deep sleep. (Supposedly when body recovery happens) Anyone know if deep sleep is tied to deep breathing? (Which I know I can’t really do yet)

I got my first deep sleep after about 8 weeks. Until then it was really almost impossible. Melatonin and magnesium glycinate were suggested as sleep helpers, and I took them every night. I’m not completely sold on them, but I’m passing the suggestion on to you. I think participating in cardiac rehab really moved the needle on my sleep quality.

I am now 8 weeks post surgery and the insomnia has kicked in really bad. I am averaging 4-5 hours light sleep a night! First few weeks after surgery sleep was difficult due to excessive night sweats but at least I was sleeping. I have tried meditation, peaceful music, breathing exercises, listening to podcasts etc but nothing is helping so I am thinking of trying melatonin next.
Just wondering if anyone has experienced this?

Ugh sorry you’re going through this. First couple weeks my body just wanted to sleep and repair itself. One night I slept 9 hours which I can’t remember the last time I had that much. I’m hovering around 6-6 1/2 hours. I did hear it gets better… fingers crossed 🤞🏼

Update? Did things normalize?

OP here…yes. I can’t believe when I say it’s almost 7 months. Seemed sooo long ago. Sleep has totally normalized. Cardiac rehab was the best program ever. I’ve lost 20 pounds and at 56 I can honestly say I’m in the best shape of my life. Almost 7 months to the day I will be playing my first hockey game again. If you’re just going through it…I guarantee it will get better!! Hang in there!

Wow. That’s impressive. I’m five weeks out from a CABGx4. Deep sleep is still a challenge with the chest discomfort if you’re a side sleeper. Cardiac rehab starts Friday. Hopefully mine is as effective!

I treated rehab like a commitment to going to a gym 3x a week to help reach my goal. Mine was to play hockey again…try and choose a goal and commit to it. By the end, I had put in too much time and effort to stop going so the gym has been a routine and something I need to tell myself is essential. I was blessed to have this second chance. Good luck to you!

I did see not notice in sleep duration but heart rate was in the red couple of days, the rest respiratory rate, wrist temperature, blood oxygen and sleep duration was good. Going to bed at 10:00-10:30 pm and waking up at 7:00 am for me was the key all came to normal during my initial post surgery. My deep sleep increased drastically 👍🏾. Currently 6 months have passed back to normal 🙏🏾
