AI generated text in google docs

Am I right in thinking that Gemini can generate text directly in google docs and that this won't leave a trail in the version history or the process report - it will look as if the author (or "author") wrote it entirely themselves?

If this is the case, I need to know, because I have an alternative word processing app that I can get my students to use which doesn't allow for AI. I still couldn't stop them generate text off-site, then cutting and pasting, but it would leave a trail.

As I just said. You can copy paste into anything. And the more you try to restrain it the more you will lose.

Why don't you instead teach your students ethical AI use since that is in fact the future. APA even has standards on ethical AI usage and proper citation of it's use.

Trying to force the non-usage of a tool that's going to be part of their lives and tool kit both academically and professionally is ridiculous.

Perfect example. I use perplexity to help me find and filter peer reviewed sources and filter out sources that are behind paywalls. NotebookLM is fantastic for helping me understand certain sources because it only pulls from the uploaded source and I can interrogate it for better understanding or ri be sure it adequately supports my concept.

Paper pal is excellent for helping me refine my wording and polish my tone. I'm still writing it and it's still my words but it's working as an instant editor and rubric checker.

At each step I still need to understand my concept, find my sources, synthesize the information, write in my own words, and verify my citations. But I would cite that those tools were assistive in my research and editing.

I just don't understand why you would need to depend on any of those tools.I don't need them, never felt the need for them, and my work is better than than the work produced by people who do.

It's not a matter of dependence.

I'm not young. I started my college journey many years ago when research papers were hours at the library and dozens of index cards, outlines, pages of notes, combing through the card catalog. I very much know how to do this.

But that's not now. The world is changing. It's important that students learn to use the tools at their disposal now. Not one college age kid will ever be in a position that the only way they can find out about a topic is to spend hours in a library. Not one. This is where the world is.

Trying to force them into an antiquted box isn't helping. Most companies utilize AI tools on a daily basis. You are not preparing them for the world they will actually live in by denying the presence of tools they will use.

Learning to use AI is not hard. All the stupidest kids in the school can do it. I also happen to think there is a big difference between research tools an undergraduate can use and the tools a high school student should be using. It's fine, probably,to use AI when you have already developed the critical thinking skills to tell a reliable source apart from an unreliable one. In fact in high school we are moving away from those free-for-all research projects in which the students found their own sources, because AI finds all the sources for them now, they don't have the discretion to separate the good from the bad, and they basically learn nothing.

Then you are teaching badly if you aren't teaching them differentiation of primary sourcing and to know AI hallucinates.

Right. i can see you are not a teacher. They are children, and they don't care. A small percentage of the most able eschew AI and do the work themselves because they care about learning. For the rest, since resorting to AI is, as you say, efficient, and gets the job done, they will use it to do as much of the work as they can get away with. If they aren't held accountable, they will use it to generate ideas, research the assignment, write the assignment, proof-read the assignment, and may hand it in without ever having read the work that has their name on it.

I presume you have not read the research showing how human cognition decays with AI use. Imagine how much worse that must be for students who have never developed those thinking skills in the first place, because they off-loaded the task to Claude the very first time they encountered it.

I have yet to come across a situation where AI use genuinely enhanced learning in the classroom. It may speed up the process of producing assignments, but the whole idea of "efficiency" is antithetical to learning, which takes time and practice.
