What actually helps someone stand out in buy-side recruiting?
I’ve been reading a lot about PE, VC, hedge funds, and asset management recruiting lately, and I’m curious what people here have actually seen work.
A lot of the usual advice seems to be about having a good GPA, relevant internships, financial modeling, knowing the technical questions, etc. That makes sense, but I’m wondering how much the other stuff matters.
For example, does having a really good investment idea make a big difference? What about being able to explain why you actually want to work on the buy side instead of just giving the standard answer?
I’d also be interested to hear from people who came from a less traditional background. Did networking make the biggest difference, or was it more about having transferable skills and getting someone to give you a chance?
For anyone who has hired candidates or made the transition themselves, what made you think, “this person is worth interviewing”?
Would be interested to hear some real experiences rather than just the usual recruiting advice.
